McCoy is all "You'll never know what Love can drive a man to do" Meanwhile Spock died saving everyone because he loved them
@DarlingNikki22 жыл бұрын
McCoy was speaking of romantic love without acknowledging that there are other forms such as the altruistic love Spock had for his crewmates (well, I guess there was a romantic attachment to Lt. Uhura per the new movies but that's another story lol). I was always under the impression that Vulcans did love, in many ways, but chose to maintain control over it as well so as to keep themselves as logical as possible.

Humans evolved (in essence) faster than Vulcans did. A testament to emotions being able to guide an entire race out of the caves....whereas Vulcans were so attached and ruled by their emotions that they required a living saint/profit to guide them away from them, becoming almost robots in a sense, just to not start war. There wasn't much room for much further development. McCoy's ignorance of Vulcan culture and disdain for their supposed lack of emotion (or seeming hypocrisy), when it's really about emotional control and logical thinking, is his failing. "Whether you understand it or not grant me my own kind of dignity," said Spock in "The Immunity Syndrome." "Vulcan dignity? How can I grant you what I don't understand?" "Then employ one of your superstitions and wish me luck." "Specifics, Doctor. Labels do not make arguments." "Alright. There's something wrong about a man who never smiles, whose conversation never varies from the routine of the job and who won't talk about his background," McCoy said referring to Mr. Norman in "I, Mudd." "I see," replied Spock who turns and walks away.

I feel like All Our Yesterdays is the culmination of their little conflict where Spock tells him to his face that he never liked the comments about his Vulcan nature through his human half and his answer “Nothing that should have happened long ago” to McCoy despite being under the effect of the time travel device does confirm he wasn’t ever fond of the doctor’s targeting of that half whenever he’s annoyed. Not helped by the fact Spock was close to actually killing him when he confronted his love about the truth which would give anyone pause after that moment. Had there been a Season 4, it probably would have either been forgotten and the status quo is reinstated or they actually acknowledge it. Had TOS been serialised like DS9; it could have been the blow off to an ongoing feud or a lead in towards a new story arc where McCoy realised how antagonistic he’d been coming off towards Spock after hearing how he actually feels and Spock being shaken at how volatile he could actually be to the point of nearly breaking someone’s neck when his Vulcan discipline fails him with both seeing how troubled their friendship are when they need Kirk to be the peacekeeper.

@RedneckSpaceMan I think it's just one of those funky 'what if the time we were in actually affected us' kinda sci-fi idea without any real scientific basis. Let's call it the magic of the portal. When they travel in time, it also alters their brain chemistry something something. Magic. I mean, they travel in time in other episodes and this doesn't happen, even though humans even 200 years before that time are quite 'barbaric' compared to Starfleet times. Genetically, there's not that much meaningful difference in this kind of species (meaning complex Eukaryote with a large genome and a long generation time) between 5000 years ago and now (think humans 5000 years ago). We know from other lore that Vulcans still have most of their strong emotions and violent tendencies, they just adopted techniques to deal with them. So even if Spock's genetics were to somehow revert, it shouldn't affect his learned abilities by default.
