Spock's Beard are without a doubt one of the most underrated bands of the 90's or even today for that matter. I think they should even appeal to those who aren't hardcore prog fans. Good music is good music.
@JohnThelin11 жыл бұрын
They're more likely to appeal to people who are not hardcore prog fans than to actual prog fans. That's kind of the deal with Nuprog.
@PeterCulka11 жыл бұрын
John Thelin Well I'm not really sure this is Nu-Prog, as that term itself emerged only maybe a decade ago - while Spock's Beard was on the scene long before that. It's normal prog just more appealing to people. And that fact alone doesn't turn this stuff into Nu-Prog :) But ye, it's easier listening than some hardcore progressive stuff. But it ain't Nu-Prog ;)
@JohnThelin11 жыл бұрын
What you're talking about at the end there is often called new prog or post-prog. And, no, SB (and TFK et al) are not neoprog (a distinct genre that was influenced by new wave/80s pop and lacked some of the technical complexity of prog), but nuprog, a genre that takes rock/pop songwriting, putting into prog structures and retaining the technical, if not the compositional, complexity of prog. It's much more likely to appeal to non-prog listeners because it adheres to the same harmonic and melodic rules that 95% of all popular music does (a quality prog never had, and probably the strongest unifying quality between the many diverse bands that were once covered by that term). Progressive rock is neither progressive nor rock, so when there's a pervasive rock element to a prog band - something that was not common at all until about the mid-90s - it makes sense to call it nuprog to distinguish it from both prog, neoprog and post-prog.
@JohnThelin11 жыл бұрын
No prog is progressive, just like no new wave is new. Once you progress from prog it is not prog any more. Taking the name of a genre literally is...um, confusing at best.
@JohnThelin11 жыл бұрын
Do you really think that Spock's Beard and their ilk do not deserve their own genre name to distinguish their distinct, highly influential style from original prog?

Honestly, this may be one of my absolute favorite songs. The musical genius of this group is appalling. Never have I enjoyed so many songs from one artist, and with noise floor dropping last year, there's always more music of theirs to listen to and love. Gotta love the Beard, prog fan or not!
@jeanlundi2141 Жыл бұрын
I'm not a huge fan of the label "prog" but the years go by and Spock's Beard (Neal era) remain some of the best music made by man to me. I like some prog, but nothing comes close to SB, which is why I don't see it as loving "prog" music. It's just SB. And it's special.

This and June are probably the two most underrated songs from the 90's. I think the radio people at the time were like "what's this? Oh, it says prog on the label. Forget it. We won't play it." Assholes.

yeah, it's a shame this one has such cheesy lyrics, since how banger the melodies are. it's a recurring problem with a lot of '90s/'00s prog rock bands... and some other' SB/Neal Morse songs suffered the same fate too
