This was supposed to be one of the most exciting and highly anticipated episodes in tv bloody history, atleast for me, and all it was a pile of never-ending dissapointment. 1.) You don't put artillery in front of your phalanx of Unsullied troops 2.) You don't charge cavalry, especially light cavalry, into the darkness against an enemy you can't see. 3.) You don't put troops in front of your barriers, only to have said troops retreat behind the barriers when they inevitably get swamped by a force with superior numbers. Whoever planned the defense of Winterfell obviously hasn't played Total War.
@TheOneBadAssGamer5 жыл бұрын
Not even the fact the Cav could see, you dont charge light cavalry head on into any force. They should be used for flanking maneuvers.
@necessarythoughts36055 жыл бұрын
Yeah when they showed the initial battle plans in episode 2 all I could think of was that the Dothraki were gonna get slaughtered and the Unsullied were gonna get destroyed as soon as the flanks of inferior quality troops retreated. I don't even know why they thought a pitched battle was a good idea. If they let the Night King assault the walls they would have had a better shot with full strength Unsullied infantry guarding them. They could of also used the Dothraki as a flanking/harassing force once the Wights began to attack the walls. And multiple layers of flaming spike pits would have immensly slowed down the Wights and allowed archers and the dragons to destroy large portions of the Night Kings army. Robb Stark would have kicked the Night Kings ass if he was still around.
@willk17565 жыл бұрын
Never send in cavalry without infantry support, against an unknown enemy force in complete darkness. Without support their slaughter was inevitable. Unsullied should have been stationed behind the barriers. One dragon doing napalm runs on the dead whilst they were delayed behind the barriers. The other providing overwatch. The trebuchets firing round the clock whilst this was happening also.

There is no such thing as a "lightning supervisor". Every person in charge of lightning is part of the cinematography department, and if any bad ligthning decisions were made, they would be blamed on the DP (Director of Photography). @Mad Max Rockatansky Everyone seems to have amnesia surrounding this. The white walkers won multiple battles and they won this one too. They completely stormed the castle, decimated all of the armies, at the end of it when the NK thought he won a master assassin who grew up in Winterfell killed him. They weren't stopped on the first resistance, what would have been terrible would be if the battle went Jon and Danny's way at all. It didn't, the only winner in that ep was Arya. Apparently sneaking is one of the most difficult skills for mankind to learn, and she did it in a few months like that, ON TOP of beating one of the best warriors in the Seven Kingdoms with a butter knife? I hate this argument that Arya has been training all her life so she deserves to kill the NK. Oberyn Martell had been training all his life to kill the mountain too but he let his arrogance take over and became careless and ultimately paid the price. You hate realism too it seems if you think Oberyn's death was realistic. He got an arm-only pat on the back of his knee... No matter how strong you are, you can't trip someone with that, only make them bend their knee slightly. Then Oberyn falls straight down on his back without rolling. Waits like 2 seconds before the Mountain casually grabs the back of his head with *one* hand. In that time he is being grabbed, he does nothing to escape, as if he's paralyzed. I knew all that fire would be extinguished, and the only reason that scene is there is because some idiot said 'hey, wouldn't it be cool if. . .?'. This episode was so bad that I pretty much consider the show over now. Sure, I'll probably watch the remaining 3 episodes out of curiosity, but they shit all over the show's legacy in less than 90 minutes. All those years of subtle build-up done away with for some snazzy special effects and 'cool' scenes. I actually turned the show off about 15 mins before the end and didn't find out about Arya until today, and I've never considered not watching the whole episode first time round.

Welcome to HBO making there own content since season 6. Nothing of substance just big battles, CGI, and the simplistic good vs evil narrative that George RR Martin clearly disagrees with.

I'm not sure it's clear he disagrees with it. I think if he did he'd be finishing up those books to set the record straight, not walking around cons looking like he doesn't have a care in the world.
@DavidMooch5 жыл бұрын
@@Big_Denney If you don't think he disagrees with the good vs evil narrative you haven't read his books or you have a hard time analyzing things you've read. That or you are blinded by your own preconceptions and biases. For example. Walter Frey was betrayed by Rob Stark and an oath was broken. In response he allied with the Lanisters and killed Rob, his wife, and his mother along with a few dozen in his militia. Arya Stark in revenge killed all of his sons, fed them to him, then invited all of his extended family to a banquet to poison them and have them choke on their own blood. Whose act was good and whose was evil? Which was more malicious? Which was justified? This is one of hundreds of examples throughout his literary work where good and bad are a matter of perspective. The hero of one side is the villain of the other. Another example is you have the virtuous paladin Ned Stark a man of principle stick to values and he is beheaded in the first book while little finger lives near to the end. People who's loyalties change and maneuver themselves to serve the realm such as Varis and Tyron do so much more for the book as a whole. Or as Varis put's it when talking to Tyrion, "he plays the game". Martin clearly is lampooning the archetypes and tropes that litter fantasy. Meanwhile, the narratives that survive the story illustrates the complexity of reality. This is why so many GOT theories have been wrong and baseless. They follow the same idealized fanciful thinking you find in the religions he shows in the book. They seek deeper meaning from a lack of understanding much like the religions seek deeper meaning in their lack of understanding a world with magic and magical creatures. I know this is a long winded response and I could go on for days while putting much more thought into this rebuttal. In the future I suggest you put more thoughts into your own.

Sansa and Danny will go at it and Tyrion, Jon as well as the rest will have to choose. ---- Given how the series has gone, bringing the white walker back to kingslanding was an utter and complete waste of a dragon. Cersei should have been dealt with first while Winterfell could have been split in two. Second half of last episode being a kind of epilogue with an elderly Tyrion (or whoever), telling a group of young children the stories of his youth.

Came out of nowhere which is how it had to be. Arya didn't "learn to fly". Remember all her training as an assassin. There was plenty of time for her to make her way across the battlefield on foot, undetected using her skills she learned in that monastery thing with all the faces on the wall.

Her statue is young. Plus I think most people for some reason give the wights pure free will of their own. They work in sync to the Night King's commands. He was sure the resistance was over, he was savoring the 3 eyed raven's death. He caught her because he noticed her with the extension of the wight that noticed her running at him. He turned and caught her.

No main characters died. Plot armor. Wouldn’t be surprised if next episode is a musical. The only reason I would even watch the next three episodes is in hopes that the Night King (as an entity, not necessarily in body) is still alive somehow. I very much doubt this, but one can hope. It would make some sense considering Bran’s look throughout the episode and the moves he made. Perhaps we might even find out the NK’s true motives, as wiping out the human’s memory is cool, but just seems like lazy writing. Remember, he is a 10,000 year old being who was once human and was created by the children of the forest. There BETTER be a NK-related twist.

Bad battle strategies. 1. Haveing the dothraki horsemen charging a larger army in the dark, when having a defensive advantage. 2. Putting trebuchets in front of your army opposed to behind. 3. Archers waiting to fire arrows, when it would basically be impossible to even miss a lob shot. 4. Losing soilders trying to light the fire trenches, when John is on a dragon just sitting on winterfell wall doing nothing but watching 5. Theon charging with a spear, opposed to throwing/yeeting it for a hail marry shot and then booking it. 6. Hidding in a crypt full of dead bodies, when your oppoent can raise the dead 7. The Night King expose himself when he could have just waited 10 more minutes and then aprroched Bran after everyone was dead. 8. I Personally think they should have pulled back the last stand to a diffrent castel opposed to Winterfell. The Frey's castle not only is now vacant, but it is further south providing more time to prepare. Additionally it forces the army of the dead to have to bottle neck across a defensible bridge or drown in the river. Aka much less chance of being surrounded. Thoughts? If I missed any feel free to add :)

4. Jon was flying blind in the blizzard, that is why neither he nor Dany lit the trench . At least I think so as it was so dark. However, I agree with you ... poor poor planning.... they did need Tyrion.
@rezaasadi8905 жыл бұрын
you are right , this was the most stupid battle I have ever seen in any movie or tv show . the strategy should be not to give dead bodies because the knight king can bring them into life and use them against you , so what they do ? they charge dothraki horsemen into the darkness . and give them even more soldiers . that was laughable . the other funny thing was the wall , they literally stood there to let the dead climb on the walls . shouldn't you release burning oil or sth on them ? the whole episode was a mess .
@GreenFalcon9265 жыл бұрын
1. The they underestimated their opponents. The dothraki are masters on horseback, so it would be best to send in the heavy cavalry to weaken the enemy lines. 2. They knew they would only use the trebuchets once, so putting them closer to the enemy so they could fire them effectively makes sense, since the dead move so fast they will be useless as soon as they get close. 3. I don't have an excuse for that, I see your point there. Fear maybe? lol 4. Jon was distracted, he was looking out for the Night King, he was also on the other part of the wall, far from Davos. 5. Theon knew he was going to die, there was no point of him throwing the spear, even if he managed to strike him, which is unlikely, he knew he was going to end up dead. 6. I don't think they even thought of the dead in the crypts. 7. The Night King got overconfident maybe? I don't know about that one. But I don't think we have seen the last of the Night King's character, someone else will end up taking his place I think. 8. They didn't pull back and extend the battle for simple reasons, time and budget. This episode alone costs them millions, and they don't have the time to spend expanding on this storyline.
@jeffm59915 жыл бұрын

The trebuchets would have been useless anyway. Projectile was very small, not explosive (not sure if explosives are known in GoT world anyway) and it takes time to fire each shot. In that time the army of dead would already reach the perimeter. Trebuchets would have done very little damage no matter where they were placed. So their only use was to lighten up the battlefield just a little bit so that dorthraki could see where to go. And this was achieved - although they did not stand a chance anyway.As for frontal charge - in GoT world they had every right to assume it would be a successful strategy - such charges worked before for instance in battle with Lannister’s forces. I cannot imagine flanking maneuver in those conditions presented in the episode. Flanking maneuver works if you can surprise your enemy. Not sure if that was possible considering that the Night King had a dragon and could take a look at preparations to the battle. And in complete darkness it would have been impossible for cavalry to actually go around and not run over each other. Remember - trebuchets were in the front, not on the flanks, to lighten the battlefield. And any lights at the flanks would have been visible from far away, and there goes your element of surprise. The trenches were behind the army so that they were able to retreat and catch breath. If the trenches were in the front, they would have been useless. If they were not on fire, then the dead would run over it, look how easily they have climbed over the walls. If the trenches were in front of the army and on fire, then the dead would simply wait until the fire is gone. At least the trenches behind allowed some time to be bought. And remember, there was never a possibility to actually win this battle just by killing wights, there were too many anyway. Plan was to survive until opportunity for killing Night King occurs.

@user-987ki34t5 жыл бұрын
bostonbenjamin There’s a huge, huge difference between sneaking up on someone and sneaking up on someone, past a large number of their soldiers in the process. It’s not a huge open area with tonnes of directions to come from. A cheap throwaway line and people saying “she’s been training for years” doesn’t change that. If I told you I went into a store with one entrance, three guards at the door, and picked something up right next to them and walked out without them noticing the obvious theft, I doubt anyone would be convinced with a simple “I’m just sneaky.” It was a good episode overall, but it’s pretty difficult to say it’s not cheating out on itself. They even did the horror cliche with Arya under a table, a blue eyed beauty looked under the table and suddenly she’s gone. It’s like they winked at us saying, “We’re not going to show you, but just trust us, she sneaked out from under there.”

Nah, I'm not buying it. The Godswood is almost as big as the entire courtyard and filled with trees. Also in a previous episode, Arya attempts to return home and is told to go away by two guards. She assured them that she would find a way in and they would ultimately regret turning her away. She knows the ins & outs of Winterfell. White Walkers don't seem to be the smartest bunch and as Sam proved a rear attack is the way to go. Comparing that to you & a convenience store is ridiculous. According to the writers in an interview with ET, HBO said they would fund any budget necessary in order to produce whatever spectacle the writers wanted. So I don’t think it had anything to do with lack of budget. I think the writers wanted to give the viewers the sense that they themselves were immersed in the battle along with the characters. Which is frenetic and chaotic. And that’s exactly what they delivered.

@AragornRespecter5 жыл бұрын
What? She’s impulsive, she left her training early, and nearly got killed because of it. She wiped out an entire house without considering the consequences. Now, if she doesn’t face any serious consequences by the time the series ends, then we can have this conversation again
@brendanauri5 жыл бұрын
Arya killing the Night King in the way she did single-handedly ruined the entire show. While I don't consider her a Mary Sue, Arya's character was definitely ruined from what it once was. She didn't "train for six seasons." She was getting beat up in Braavos until she killed the Waif, and then she magically became a super assassin who can teleport through armies of the undead.
@ryanlabrie15275 жыл бұрын
ya Arya is no marry sue, the problem is they didnt show her using any of her skills to kill the all powerful villian. she just comes in inexplicably from off frame, and stabs him with a little knife. no battle, no set up shot of her getting into position, making a distraction, using a face to get in, or any of her skills. Just the classic, "im out of frame so im invisible to all the enemies around me and can approach from nowhere unhindered" for the sake of making a "cool" shot. then make the night king have no combat ability and have Arya kill him with a really bad, suspension of disbelief breaking move. Shes no marry sue, but they sure gave her a marry sue scene in her moment of glory really making it not matter if she is one or not. none of her training or build up matters if you dont put it to use. they made killing the night king so easy, that im convinced Braun could have taken a few fighters north of the wall in like season 4 and just assassinated him and been done with this whole building villian that became nothing more than a side plot distraction. could have gotten it out of the way ages ago and saved all the time, time in which they now have very little of to wrap it all up.

@jshah19615 жыл бұрын
They have been showing how quite she is and how good she is at sneaking up on people the whole season and even showed it in the assassins creed style in the castle to avoid all the wights. Mallisandra told her the whole blue eyes prophecy again and repeated not today and off she went, he'll you can even see the hair on one of the white walkers move as he turns around to see what it was and then bam she's attacking the night King. The only reason why he noticed her and almost stopped her is because she let out that last minute yell, but it was meant to be a surprise if they showed her sneaking up to them it would have made it weak.

Good point.
@darrenfleming79015 жыл бұрын
They should have showed her sneaking about and then had theon sacrifice himself to distract the night king and let her strike. Would have made an epic sequence and mostly made theon's death fell much more important, giving him the role of a hero.

Do you not simply love it when a story is told so interwoven and beautiful and over time has built up so much potential only for much of it to be thrown away with one episode flop? As a simple man, I can see that the writers have turned to "the crowd wants it so we gave it" attitude. They don't have a true connection with the bigger picture anymore. With that said, I still have respect for the efforts put into it.
@Alex-cs1vq5 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure if you go on their YT channel and watch the video where they discuss the episode they basically said "we know people liked Lyana (the little girl) so we made her kill a giant". Thats it

Please let me know if anyone agrees, but... Arya jumping out of nowhere to just stab the Night King, after nothing about her story suggested she should or would be the one, was the most colossal waste of 10 year build up that I've ever seen. Just another blatant attempt of HBO to shove their female empowerment down our throats (frankly, after Jon Snow became virtually worthless after his entire life was spent preparing to fight the dead/Long Night, female empowerment is ALL the show is about now). The biggest anti climactic let down I've experienced, and has essentially ruined the show for me. Ben, Arya might not be a full fledged Mary Sue, but she's damn near one with that Deus ex machina ability to just somehow get past 100s of wights and dozens of white walkers. Where are your FACTS and LOGIC to explain how she got to the Night King, or why it should have been Arya at all. They totally shoehorned it in just for the points of "oh look it was a 'twist' guys" and "bonus: it was a girl!! Super extra bonus: she was sexually liberated just before the battle!!!" So brave, HBO, so brave.
@RIPFerrus5 жыл бұрын
I had this same argument with a friend. I posited that the only way she achieved that feat was because she assumed the face of a wight and snuck in with the rest of the undead as they closed in on Bran and Theon. Only way I could justify what I saw.
@GekkeJonne5 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I wouldn't mind if it was Arya if at least her scenes in this episode led to that final moment of her killing him, but they didn't. It just happened randomly, out of nowhere. Nothing even suggested she was trying to get at the Night King, like for instance Jon Snow did when he thought he had a chance to fight him one on one
@andresanchez7285 жыл бұрын
I still had hope the female empowerment was just a ruse for the final victory of masculinity but wtf was that episode? Even the symbolism of the red woman igniting the swords and then sending them to charge to their death seems to scream "This is just another piece of feminist propaganda, where we see all male power finally crushed."
@TheSpaniard5 жыл бұрын
@@GekkeJonne yeah, you're right, that's another thing that annoyed me is that they didn't even hint at it until the very last minute when Melisandre said the color eyes Arya has killed (ending with blue for the night king), and then the "what do we tell death." Very, VERY forced.
@TheSpaniard5 жыл бұрын
@@RIPFerrus I would agree, except we don't really know how the face thing works. Could she get a face off a wight/skeleton? How would it work with her not being "magically controlled" by a white walker (as in, would the walkers notice that a "wight" wasn't being controlled by them)? And would she have had enough time to get the face and then get over there? Those are are very granular questions that I could honestly forgive not having answers to and/or suspend logic to believe (since it's just a TV show obviously) if they'd at least shown how she got there. But they didn't because they knew they couldn't justify it, and so it just came out of nowhere. Huge let down. At least give me a duel between Jon Snow and the NK! But no, Jon just screams at a dragon instead lol
