Hi there! If your Gladiolus bulbs don't show a growing tip growing out of the center or partial side of the bulb, then look for a concave or depression on one side of that bulb. That will be the top and plant each bulb with that concave side facing up. Also, Gladiolus tend to be slightly or really flat on either side (top or bottom); kind of squished ball look or donut shape, so if you don't know which flatter side is the top or the bottom, you can plant them on their side, like turning a donut on its side. That way, you have have a 50/50 chance of getting the orientation right and this can give a bulb its best chance to grow and thrive in your garden. Hi Nash! 👋 Thank you for watching. Sorry to hear your gladiolus flowers keep falling over, but that must mean they are larger flowers and just a little top heavy. If you can stake them to hold up with either bamboo stakes or some small metal or even wood pieces, they can stand tall for you to enjoy even more. Hope that helps. 😉

@Nash Warran Great! Bamboo stakes are really good for this. 😁 If you planted your gladiolus bulbs at 4-inches (10-11 centimeters), then your planting depth should be fine. Gladiolus flowers can get really top-heavy, as you know, so staking them is a good option. Also, if you planted them in a grouping of 3, 5, or more bulbs together, the grouped stems and flowers can help stabilize each other, too. Have fun and enjoy your beautiful gladiolus flowers. 😎

When I dug up my gladiolus corns last year there were lots of small corns about the size of marbles attached. I guess they are too small for flowers this year, should I plant and fertilize for next year?

Hi Mark! 👋 That is sooo cool you are seeing baby-glads or "corm-lets" or "bulb-lets". In general, you can still plant these baby-glads this year, even though they might not flower. The reason is because they still need to grow and develop and keep maturing and be closer to flowering in the coming year(s). So, yes, we would definitely plant them. Love this video! Straight forward instructions and good visual instructions. Only thing I'm wondering about is, don't you use and added fertilizers or dust sprouting glads with something like sevin dust?

Thank you! Love your feedback. We appreciate you calling this out, as we didn't explain this part in our video very well. Many gardeners do like to add fertilizers and other products to help Glads and other plants get established in their gardens. We have a well draining soil that we have been building up with nutrients for the last couple of years, so we are confident that the Glads will really like their new home. We manage pests in our garden with preventative and then organic strategies so we don't use pesticides or insecticides, like Sevin (is that what you were referencing?).

@@SpokenGarden I am using a mulch of steer maure/dirt from the barnyard mixed with composted cornfodder bales. I was wondering about adding any fertilizer to the hole as I'm planting the bulbs. My soil is new a new bed that I just dug this year. I think I may just throw a little granular fertilizer in for good measure. I think my game plan with the sevin is going to be a wait and see approach for insecticides. I would rather not use it if I don't have to. Thank you for your response! Keep the videos coming!!

That sounds like really good mulch! Great to hear about you planting a new garden bed. That's exciting! On mixing fertilizer into your planting holes; it's an accepted practice to add different fertilizers or soil amendments to planting holes, but there is a risk that if granulated fertilizer comes into direct contact with the bulb, or it's roots, it can actually burn that tissue stressing and damaging the plant roots. A work around for this is to place your bulbs in the planting hole, bury them enough with soil so they aren't visible, and then sprinkle the granular fertilizer into the hole. That way the fertilizer can't be in direct contact with your bulb's roots and you still get to mix it in to the planting hole.

Hi Shweta! Thank you for watching and for commenting! Great question about gladiola's. 👍 Yes, in mid to late fall (when they have withered and died back down to the soil level) you should dig them up, remove most of the soil from each bulb, and store them in a cool, dry, dark location for the winter months to them be planted back out in your garden once the soil starts warming up and there is no more threat of frost in your region. Glads grow best in Zones 2-11, BUT they can overwinter and are hardy (no need to dig them up for winter) in Zones 8-11. In Zones 2-7, they need to be stored over the winter as we have described above. We hope this answers your question and thanks again for watching our video! 😃👍💪

My bulbs all produced tall green leaves a few weeks ago but have yet to produce a stalk or flowers. At the end of July in a Zone 7, do I wait for next year to replant the bulb or is there a way to help their growth along?

Hi Elyssa! 👋 Thank you for watching and you ask a great question. We noticed our new gladiolus bulbs grew about 2 to 3 feet and then just stopped doing anything for a couple of weeks (3-4). They were nice a green and were just hanging out enjoying the sun and water every day. Then, about a week ago, we noticed a central stalk growing just above the leaves with what looked like buds forming at the very top. Now, they are almost ready to pop open with beautiful yellow flowers. So, our advice to you is to just give them some time to "hang out" and enjoy that full sun 🌞 and water. They are getting ready to literally show you their vibrant colors. 💪💚 Now, there are a couple of caveats here to watch for; mainly if your gladiolus bulbs are planted in full sun for most of the day then there is a good chance they aren't going to bloom. Also, if the bulbs are young and just formed last year, there is also a good chance they may not bloom until next year when they are a little older and have matured some. Hope that helps. 😄

Hi Simple Kitchen! 👋 Great question! We planted our this last spring for the first time. Spring time, after the last threat of frost has past and your garden soil is beginning to warm up (no frozen soil basically). This is pretty typical for gladiolus in general. Make sure to check your USDA hardiness zone so you know if there are specific gladiolus that are hardy in your area. Here is what we go by and how we teach others about planting bulbs: Spring flowering bulbs are planted in the previous Fall AND Summer flowering bulbs are planted in the previous Spring. So, this fall, you should plant daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinth, iris, and others (IF they are cold hardy in your area = hardiness zone). This next spring (of 2021), you should then plant gladiolus, dahlia's, liatris, and others that flower in the summer months. Make sure to check with your local extension agency or local nursery on specific bulbs to make sure they are hardy enough to survive your eastern winters. Hi Olivia! 👋 Good question. If you can, try to leave them where they are right now so they can finish their growth and flowering cycle to then start to shut down to go dormant. When they start to go dormant, we would say then move them to their new location you have planned. This way is less stressful on your plants. 😁 If, because of a tight timeline or project deadline, you need to move them now, it can be ok, but will be stressful for them which can result in smaller or very little flowering later, if they haven't flowered yet. Also, if moving right away, be sure to water regularly and monitor for other stress like pests or diseases, as they move in when a plant is stressed and an opportunity presents itself. Hi Isaac! 👋 Thank you for watching and really good question. It might be a little on the late side to plant gladiolus bulbs, but if they are actually sprouting shoots that you can see in the packaging, you should plant them because they have already started their growth cycle. If they aren't able to at least grow some leaves and roots in soil, and get some sun and continuous water to partially get through a growth cycle this year, they might not come back next year and just all wither away. If you see white or light brown growth coming out of each bulb, we say plant them and see how they do. If no growth is seen, then store them in a cool dry place to plant next spring. Gladiolus plants are spring planted, summer flowering bulbs and you can stagger their flowering to continuously have flowering glads over the summer months and into fall. A two-week staggering of planting them is a good standard to go by. You can either plant the bulbs inside about 4-6 weeks before the last frost or freezing temperatures in your area, or plant outside when the threat of frost has past. Hi Meg! 👋 Thank you for watching. If you are hailing from Melbourne, Australia, you might be slightly ahead of planting time there for your gladiolus bulbs. We say this because best practice is to plant them outside (ground or container) after the threat of the last frost has past. Not being from Melbourne and never living there, we can't speak to your local climate and when your last frost will pass, but being that it's still winter there, you might want to keep your glads close to your home or other building under cover to help protect them for a month longer. So, yes, place them in your greenhouse, if you have one until the last frost date has passed. After a cursory search on Google, it looks like your estimated last threat for frost is sometime this coming September, so if it was us, we would keep the bulbs under cover and protected for residual building heat so they don't freeze. After the threat of frost is passed, we would then place them out in our garden in a nice sunny 🌞😎 location and wait for them to visually pop up through the container soil. Until we see them coming up, we wouldn't appy much to any water so they don't run the risk of rotting and being too wet. It's completely up to you, of course, as you know your weather and local climate much better than us, but please consider these above suggestions. Also, once the bulbs are planted, you can expect them to flower in 70-90 days, in general. We hope all this is helpful and thanks again for watching. 😃

Hi Teresa! 👋 Great question and thank you for asking it. 😃 If you bought Gladiolus bulbs and they are coming out of a package, sometimes they have roots and sometimes they don't. So, we wouldn't worry about that part at all. As long as they aren't squishy or hollow-feeling, you should be good and they are very much alive. Totally, you can start them indoors! 👍 You can do this 4 weeks before the last forecasted frost date in your area (www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates). You can also just wait for after your last frost date to plant them outside, too. Starting your bulbs indoors, you can start them in a cup (individually) or tub (grouping) with water (about a 1/4" deep so it just touches and comes up to the bottom of the bulb) or in potting soil (4-5 inches so the each bulb is about halfway to 3/4's burried). Make sure to orient them the correct way with the one surface pointed up that looks like either a concave or dented surface OR actually already has it's pointy tip growing. How long do the gladiolus bulbs take to break surface?

Hi Candy! 👋 Thank you for watching and commenting. Getting your Glads to break the soil surface is really dependent on your soil temperature reaching and staying at 55-degrees F. A good way to think of this is to track when your outside air temperature reaches 50-70-degrees F to then start to expect your Glads to wake up and see them grow. Seeing your Glads is also dependent on when you first planted them this spring and then how long they have been exposed to 50-70 degrees outside air temps. If you plant earlier this week, you might have to wait another week before seeing them, but if you planted them back in April and you have had 50-70 degrees air temps consitently after that, there could be something else happening. Hi Dirk! 👋 That's a really good question. Some people might say yes, it's too late to plant them, but there is also something called succession planting where gardeners will plant gladiolus bulbs every two weeks or so throughout the spring and into the summer to then have a rolling abundance of gladiolus flowers and this can extend their flowering in your garden (all other things being equal, like sun, water, temperature, and general plant health). We say go for it. 😉👍 Especially if you have the bulbs and they are sprouting/starting to show signs of bulb growth a little later than usual. We planted at least 20+ gladiolus bulbs just before the end of spring and they are just now starting to break through the soil and really grow. If you have all their necessary needs of sun, water, soil, and temperature met, definitely start planting. 😃 We hope you plant lots of glads and let us know how it goes! You can plant your gladiolus bulbs in containers, if you'd like. ✔😃 Totally possible and your potting soil is great to use so your gladiolus bulbs are surrounded by well-draining soil. If you can mix in some compost to the soil, that will help too, or make sure to fertilized about every other week with a liquid fertilizer (but definitely follow the fertilizer label so you aren't over or under fertilizing). Make sure to have fun when you get out there and plant your gladiolas and enjoy your new plants! 😉👍💪

Hi Jaye's Creations! 👋 This is a great question because the "general rule of thumb" for bulb planting depth works if you don't have the packaging or the label to reference. We are assuming here that when you say "my bulbs say 8" deep" that you are referring to the packaging they came in. So happy 😉👍 you do have your packaging to get that exact planting depth. Labels can take the guessing out of planting bulbs or seeds so good on ya for having that info. Definitely always follow any packaging that your bulbs or seeds come in as the producer of it knows best for their product. And, if something goes wrong, like it doesn't grow right or at all and you let the producer know, because you followed their specific instructions for their specific product you could be entitled to a refund or replacement.
