A matten in the corner with same color back ground is nearly invisible especially with plants in front of it. Run the hose to the other end and you get good circulation and aeration.

You can run a matten filter with an air pump as well. I have one set up in my 55gallon for over a year and have had to clean it once. They are great for little fish and shrimp as it provides a big surface for them to graze. I have java moss growing in mine and it just looks like a living wall. They are cheap to set up. You only need two slithers of glass and some silicone to build the corner brackets - and a sheet of sponge is cheap.

I built a Mattenfilter for my 65g after testing them in my 20 and then 40. In 40 years of fish keeping I haven't had a more efficient or easier filter. Growing anubias, java fern and bolbitis on mine. Still filling it in a little at a time. i.imgur.com/ChgSISx.jpg

@@uniquascaper7052 Nice scape, will look good when some of the plants fill out. I am slowly switching all my tanks to HMFs, even the ones with sumps - plan is to put the overflow behind the foam wall.

New subscriber here. I tend to use sponge filters the most. However I would like to use matten filters one day.

One day I’m hoping to set up some shrimp tanks with matten filters. I haven’t really used them since I shut down my shrimp tanks.

Can I use a powerful power head with HMF in a 125 gallons tank?

As long as the intake is behind the sponge and the out put is into the main aquarium to force the water through the sponge it will work.
