SpongeBob's premise and world doesn't allow room for long overarching plots and world building like Avatar the Last Airbender or even Codename Kids Next Door. SpongeBob's premise is pretty much can you make the kids / general audiences laugh for 11 minutes. However this has less to do with the show and more to do with how it's managed. If Seasons 1-3 were made with the minds of the executives, they would be less successful. Dr. Who can run 100+ years and still feel fresh since there's a lot more creative freedom with that premise and work environment. People need to stop worshiping Hillenburg because he and Tibbit didn't have any plans to stop the higher ups from ruining their product because they simply didn't care because to them they were just workers lucky to be hired. While Hillenburg wished that he ended the show after Season 3, he and Tibbit never acted in this regard mainly because he had a job, reviewed and approved scripts like the Splitter, and was a worker in the capitalist system despite stepping down as an executive producer.
@mileven3ggo3njoyer9 ай бұрын
My problem with new spongebob has got to be the writing. They never really go beyond a simple idea or concept, just stretching that idea out for the next 11 minutes. And their attempts at fan service by referencing the past never makes these episodes stand on their own. It just feels like they aren't confident enough to tell their own stories anymore, rather going back to the stories that people loved so much to begin with. Nothing wrong with doing that in moderation if theres an idea behind it, but more often than not, it just seems the show is overrelying on the past, making the whole experience feel so stagnant.
@Valtharr9 ай бұрын
Honestly, I think it's the opposite. The old episodes, especially the really well remembered ones, all had a single, simple premise, and then just built as many jokes around it as they could. The newer episodes try too hard to be original. Either that, or nostalgic.
@RYMAN13219 ай бұрын
Exactly Nostalgia pandering and fanservice especially when it’s overused just comes across as lazy and cheap. For example that’s the main issue Ghostbusters Afterlife had. It completely overused nostalgic fan service to the point it came across as forced and lazy. The film itself wasn’t terrible but they really needed to dial back on the fanservice. I do think Frozen Empire looks better though, it looks more original at least.

Squidward: You two bought a giant screen TV just so could play in the box? Patrick: I didn't think it would work.
@TayoEXE8 ай бұрын
The annoying thing about it is how inconsistent it was and like you said, too much Tell don't show. First, in Idiot Box, it's established that we cannot see what is being imagined. Squidward kept wondering how it "sounded" like they were doing everything they were imagining. I guess you can argue we saw what Squidward was imagining in this new one, but he wasn't trying to imagine anything. We know that in the original, he tried sneaking into the box and all he saw was, yeah, a box. He accidentally fell in. His immediate reaction wouldn't be to get sucked into his imagination by having fun like he did at the end of the original. Also, in the new one, Spongebob and Patrick can't see him in the box, again, something that wasn't a part of the original. He didn't call it his Imagination Box. The whole joke was that they bought a TV but just wanted "the box." Squidward opens the box and can immediately see them, so why on earth is the logic of that so inconsistent with this supposed sequel? It's like they went off the memes and didn't even watch the original episode. Next, as you said, they spent so much time making jokes about how Spongebob and Patrick could influence him to think of something else and thus affect his imaginary world, which sort of happens in the original when he kicks the box and they imagine an avalanche (lol). But the whole joke rested on NOT being able see any of that. The whole Robot Pirate Island part and "YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE, COPPERS!" still cracks me up. I feel they should have maybe reversed roles since Squidward should know how it works finally, and maybe Sponge and Pat become concerned for him when they overhear crazy noises from his how or something as he comedically gets curious about what he can do, maybe in another box. When Squidward doesn't know anyone's looking, he may do sillier things.

Currently enjoying DVDs of season 1 and 2 and i genuinely SHOCKED at how many memorable, classic and iconic episodes were in the first 2 seasons. So many episodes i thought were from season 3 (or 2), ended uo being in the (respectively) previous season 😂

Yeah, not every episode was good in the golden age, but most of it was. It stretched until Season 4 and then it dropped off afterwards. Genuinely good episodes still exist, but not like that.

I can see that showing the actual “imagination” really does ruin the magic of the original, that’s like if they made a sequel to Sailor Mouth, where they reveal that the “censored” bad words were the bad words, that it was dolphin noises they were saying and not actual bad words, it takes away the big joke of the original.

That would also ruin SpongeBob's 20th anniversary special, as it's implied they really do curse on the bus.

It’s like the writers only understood “haha imagination is a meme”.

To be honest, bringing back the nostalgia Spongebob moments ISN'T making modern Spongebob LESS annoying.

Hey Vailskibum have you heard about Netflix releasing a full movie onto their own channel? If so please make a video on it. It deserves so much more attention.

I'd rather see an original episode than see a direct sequel to a golden age episode. The new writers just cannot capture the original writing.

I can’t believe Nickelodeon/Viacom makes new SpongeBob episode that tries to be a sequel from a classic era and just make it as a lackluster and keeps getting worse. This is why most young audience/spongebobfans that weren’t getting interesting and doesn’t pay attention in this show anymore 😢😭

The OG was legendary. The stories and the way how they do that all was not hilarious, yet memorable. The box shop ruins the magic. References, not sequels are needed. Like the one where spongebob forgot squidward

They could’ve just put SpongeBob,Patrick,and squidward just laughing in the box at random times,and it would be a better episode.

Seasons 13 onwards, it feels like several episodes are doing nothing but what I like to call “nostalgic pandering”. As in bring back things from the golden years as a way of them saying, “hey, remember this?” as a way hide the episode’s lack of effort and recapture the original pre-movie magic. But it just comes off as both lazy and desperate, AND IT’S GETTING OLD!
