I remember watching the bonus features for one of my spongebob seasons as a kid and one of creators said they named him Squidward despite being an octopus because something like "Octoward" just didn't sound right.

Good video my man. The issue I have with your theory however is the confirmed birthdates of some of the characters. Mr. Krabs has been shown to be born on November 30, 1942 and Spongebob was born on July 14, 1986 so assuming spongebob got a job at the Krusty Krab as a young adult like the Pilot would suggest, the series would have to at least take place in the mid-2000s.

There's David Hasselhoff in the first movie, and what about other land animals like Sandy? I'm pretty sure other land animals appeared as well. Though I do kind of see where you're getting at with it being like a 40s cartoon sort of thing like in old mickey mouse cartoons. (The sceneries in those cartoons of course)

This is a pretty good theory, but countered by the existence of Patchy the Pirate who clearly lives in at least the 80’s. But another theory could be that the prehistoric versions of the characters were wiped out by the American tests but survivors like Krabs, Plankton, and whoever else you wanna throw in there started the modern society. Maybe take it a step further and say that Sandy was sent there to help recolonize.
