I see your critiques of SpongeBob’s lack of fear around the ghosts and counter with the season 4 episode Ghost Host. In that episode The Flying Dutchman wrecks his ghost ship, so he stays at SpongeBob’s house while it gets fixed. During the episode he’s constantly scaring SpongeBob until he starts losing his fear and just starts reacting with bored sighs.

Feel your feelings, man. Corporations not respecting fair use is ridiculously common, even though it shouldn't be. Universal and WB are typically the worst for this. I've heard other YT folx say that Disney is surprisingly cool about it, and Paramount/Nickelodeon seem to shrug it off, too. (Also, make a backup channel, please! just in case!)

Honestly the episode did suffer in terms of spooky SpongeBob. It helped having somebody to watch with it and the jokes did actually work. Might be a bit dark, but this is how I'd write this episode: There's an interesting idea here about Spongebob trying to please everyone and I'd run with it. I'd start off the episode the same way with the old timer asking for a Rusty on Rye, and walking away dissatisfied. SpongeBob, summons up Rusty, trying to put aside his fears so he can learn to make the famous sandwich. He strikes a deal with Rusty to learn his secret, but it seems he can't seem to get it right. No matter what he does Rusty keeps telling him he's doing something wrong. Cue the ghosts who show up for the sandwich, but everytime Spongebob serves them something's wrong. They're not happy, the "ungrateful dead" as it were. Spongebob keeps working, and working trying to perfect the Rusty on Rye, not noticing he's slowly turning into a ghost. The poor guy is literally working himself to death to appease customers who always find a reason to complain. Mr. Krabs and Patrick show up and that's when the exposition comes in. Mr. Krabs explains many ghosts are just lost souls with unfinished business and in this case they're exploiting that loophole to stay on Earth. Many of them WANT to find something wrong with the Rusty on Rye, with Rusty himself demanding perfection so he and the others don't have to return to the afterlife. Mr. Krabs sends them off to the afterlife in comedic fashion and Spongebob learns his lesson the key to success isn't trying to appease everyone, and some people can't be pleased. Always do your best, but don't let it come at the expense of your health and the like.

My only critique Is that thinking that "modern kids" likes this, in some regard yes, but just because they are presented with this and Is all they know. The thing that makes old spongebob so special Is that they just didnt focused on kids, rather made a whole family show, where even were jokes for the grown ups (don't drop the soap?). Spongebob isn't as much of a scaredy pants anymore, after the episode where the flying dutchman lives with him for a while. The dutchman scared spongebob so often that spongebob got bored of it, and thus wasnt scared as easily any more. It was character development.
