Midsommar was a therapeutic experience for me. It perfectly captured how I felt while dating an emotionally abusive person. Even though the ending is meant to be brutal and shocking, it is also so cathartic.

@Gumbo Clay While I agree with some of your points, I don't necessarily agree on Dani being the 'monster'. She was a victim of being brainwashed and assimilated by a cult that used her trauma and her toxic relationship to gain a shot at manipulating her to join in. The cult definitely took note of what she was going through and thus used that to their advantage.

Hey Emma I just want to thank you for being so emotionally open, while still talking through the imagery of the films that have changed you. In this batch I do see a thread. They are all essentially variations on one theme taken to different extremes. I get the feeling you have had to learn to fight back in life. And there is more I could guess psychologically, but this isn't really the place. But I really appreciate your courage. Martyrs remains my absolute favorite film of the 21st Century in any category. Probably for different reasons that it affected you. But it certainly did get to me on a deep level. Another film that effected me? The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, when I saw it in a theatre in 1979. All I can say is that when I walked out of that film everything changed for me; intellectually, culturally, creatively. There were of course many more, but we'll leave it there for now. Deep gratitude to you. Keep exploring horror. (By the way I'm working on an elaborate video on symbolism in horror. I'll let you know when it's ready.)

I loved that Room was almost entirely told through the perspective of a child. It made everything simultaneously even more horrifying and outrage inducing, while also making it seem strangely innocent.

Love you mentioning Delores Claiborne. One of those movies that slipped through the cracks and deserves much love. I always love when movies explore the idea that we might not know the whole story when it comes to our parents, or anyone close to us for that matter. You ought to consider writing a book exploring how trauma is dealt with in film.

Thanks for shouting out Room. I love how it avoids being either sensationalistic or emotionally distant. We don't end up feeling pity for Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, but we believe in their struggle and their ability to recover and integrate into society. The closest thing I can think of to a movie that "changed me" is Network. It showed me not only that newsmedia had been more about spectacle than information since before I was born, but how little we've done to fix the problem since the 70s.

I agree, I absolutely loved Gerald’s Game. The visuals during the eclipse flashbacks were stunning. And the scene of her fleeing in the car with the red and orange filter, and the semi jump scare of the midnight man smiling in the backseat with those red eyes... ugh.. so creepy

Oh my god, I love that someone else picked Matilda because that was my other choice! But Some Like It Hot felt like more of a pick that showed an actual shift for me. I remember groaning when my friend suggested we watched it, and was so unsure what with the mafia chase at the beginning - and then suddenly I was just completely captivated. It was so amazingly funny, and the humour still weirdly translated to modern day without feeling really dated, which blew me away. And now I actively seek out classic film all the time - it's probably why I'm so into film lists! Thanks for including my contribution :) And I need to seek out Dolores Claiborne because I enjoyed the book! It's cool that the combo of that and Gerald's Game are on here seeing as the two are linked!

I don´t know if I told my Martyrs story here: I saw it in 2008 at a German Festival and it had already had it´s reputation as an extreme movie. So, when the "Family scene" was on almost a whole row of the packed theatre left...I guess it was too much and they didn´t know what they were into then. When the movie was over it was dead silent in the theatre and one elderly man in my row was really shaken with tears in his eyes. Yes, this one is a very special experience...only one year after the already totally disturbing Inside.

@@spookyastronauts I think the problem was that the Festival did not have much marketing in the huge multiplex...and if you bought a single ticket there was only the name of the movie among all the other mainstream productions. Maybe they just read that it was in French with subtitles. Many people just want to see movies in other languages here. So they ran into the most disturbing piece of the Festival (although Eden Lake was the Opening Night and Midnight Meat Train and Let the Right One in also had their German premiere there).

Aw i love this video. ♡ you got me emotional too haha. I also have many movies that changed me but The Fountain is probably one of the biggest ones. The first time I watched it I was struggling with deep depression based on a lot of different trauma that was based on many different kinds of loss and so my absolute biggest fear was losing my boyfriend who was the only person at that time that kept me attached to this Earth. Watching The Fountain was like Aronofsky himself held up a mirror in front of me and told me I had to focus on the now instead of burying myself in the past that hurt so badly and projecting it onto a future I can't control anyway. I was literally just Hugh Jackman doo caught up with my own fear of potentially losing the love of my life too and in the process I wasn't really there in the moment with him. Totally messed me up at the time. The mere idea of always being separated by the thin wall between life and death was too much haha. Still glad I watched it when I did because it lead to my bf and I talking about the movie and me being able to open up about my very shameful anxiety about losing him. It was a very emotional moment and actually quite therapeutic. It's been awhile since I saw this movie but I still take the lessons from it and apply it to my daily life as I grow older and try to come to terms with my own and my loved ones' mortalities. Still struggle with letting go. Still a little bit like Hugh Jackman but at least I'm not actively fighting it anymore. I will never understand people who don't like that movie but I'm also super biased haha

A film that changed me is the Garden of Words, the whole last scene where the high schooler yells truths at the teacher who’s stuck in her own sorrow, it felt like he was shouting at me. It was so important to me as I have a chronic illness that at that time made me feel completely hopeless, so now when I think like that I remind myself of that boy who would kill to be in a position of freedom that I am in, and that time waits for no one. 💕

A film that changed my life when I was 16 was "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Spielberg's vision of what our first contact might be like was poetic and moving. I've seen it many times. A more recent film is 2011's "Melancholia". Lars von Trier's end-of-the-world story is unlike anything I've ever seen. It takes place in its own time and place. The final shot is glorious and exhilarating.

I’m going to check out Room tonight. The objective of a film, at least in my opinion, is to elicit a strong emotional response. Without that, the film does not carry any weight. Schindler’s List and Lilya-4-Ever are two that changed me. Martyrs too-that one has never left my mind. Will I ever experience anything like Martyrs again? Unrelated: I watched 5 movies that I never got around to seeing: Dogs Don’t Wear Pants, Dead Man’s Shoes, Tusk, Don’t Look Now and Taxidermia. No one ever talks about Taxidermia! That movie is insane! Good insane! I’m surprised you have failed to mention Taxidermia and Dogs Don’t Wear Pants.

It's funny, I first saw Martyrs and Antichrist with a week or so of each other, and found the latter to be an antidote to the former. I had considered myself desensitized to horror by that point (the likes of Hostel entertained but didn't exactly disturb) and the first half of Martyrs I enjoyed and found satisfying. The second half however hit home (no pun intended) and I found myself sickened and depressed, mostly by the nihilism of the ending. In hindsight, it makes the film all the more brilliant for moving me in such a way. Antichrist was a feel-good movie in comparison, but it has been the subject of many fruitful conversations. Regarding Gerald's Game and Dolores Claiborne, I remember seeing the latter's movie in the 90's and it resonating with me, and I subsequently read the books back-to-back as King intended. They are truly a pair and I was excited for Flanagan's film, which was gratefully brilliant. Seeing both films together I'd imagine would be an experience, though I'd advocate the books first.

"Martyrs" will always stay with me. I still remember it almost frame for frame since first seeing it. It's deeper horror for sure plus beautiful filmmaking wow. After I first saw it when it came to the west I was adamantly recommending to my circles. "Dolores Claiborne" has been on my queue for awhile my bad + "The Evil Within" which I firstly heard about from your past coverage. Looking forward to it fo sho. "Gerald's Game" is top tier; one of those I hope more folks see. And yes "Donnie Darko" definitely is one of those films that changed and punctuated my teens.

Seeing you cry and get all vulnerable and share a glimpse into such a deeply tragic part of your life is so brave and beautiful to watch. I'm glad that this particular movie Geralds Game was cathartic for you. Seeing this movie spooked me but I remember that vital scene in the courtroom and I thought "Yes! Finally a happy ending to an actual scary movie" I enjoyed it. And as for Martyrs there's not much more I can add onto to that then it already has. it is by far the most beautiful brutal frightening yet enlightening and meaningful horror movie in existence imho and I've practically seen every horror movie under the moon! It's been since 2013 since I last seen that movie I couldn't work myself to watch it again in 7 years but boy has it stuck with me ever since! Especially that end scene **SPOILER** Where that woman asked the tortured and skinned (girl) martyr is there an afterlife? And she received the answer she had been looking for her entire life and unfortunately this is the cause of all this tragedy in the first place. And instead of sharing the truth that was revealed to her with a totally ambiguous tone she states "keep doubting" then puts a gun in her mouth and commits suicide. That forever will stay with me. What was the answer? By the end of the movie I was so emotionally drained and in a state of shock. Beautifully tragic scary violent gory philosophical film this was. Nothing can quite touch it not even Hereditary.

Wow, I either love or really enjoy all of the movies that impacted you! You were starting to get me to tear up😮 Goodness, I think about “Martyrs” everyday... I feel like I could write several dissertations on different aspects/scenes from that movie, especially the ending! “The Evil Within” was an unexpected creepy & grotesque emotional journey for me! It’s dark, haunting & very sad to me... That said, I feel like “Prince of Darkness” (1987) had a strong impact on me since it got me to think about religion from a scientific approach. It was at a time in my life when I started to question & wonder about the significance of the Bible. I was never a religious person, but the thought of an anti-God was just terrifying! I eventually made decisions to start studying the Bible, with some applications of math & science, and its changed my life in ways I never expected. That probably sounds more cerebral than emotional, but still...

I also read Devil´s Rock and Cabin by Tremblay and Cabin might be the most easy to adapt because it doesn´t switch between media and it is pretty straight forward.

Still haven’t seen Martyrs,not sure if I’m up for it these days since I’m not a gore hound.But the movie that changed me was Robocop.I saw this in the theater with my mom in 1987 at age 11.I had never seen hyper violence before & when Murphy gets blown to pieces I was trembling.

Interesting. One of the worst experiences I ever had watching a movie was Robocop 2, in the theater. There's a montage of attempts at creating "police automatons" reanimating the dead that got under my skin...the absolute horror of waking up to find your body has been destroyed, replaced with military armaments, even your face is gone - you stare into a mirror at your own skull. The horror, the instant insanity. And the audience I saw this with laughed their butts off, they found it the funniest thing ever. Ruined the movie, and I felt haunted, felt like crap for days.

This is going to sound really stupid as I am an old married woman with two grown sons and a teen daughter, but the cartoon Her Ike’s really hit me for some reason. I must have watched it a billion times by the time the boys were out of grade school but one time I just really started thinking about him as a person, his family situation/friends, reputation, thoughts of himself. What he must be feeling at each stage in his life and by the time he starts singing “Right Where I belong” I was crying. Stupid I know but I made me think of expectations and fear and all kinds of things both from my past but what my boys may feel and face.

In my 40 years on this planet I’ve seen quite a few films and most I forget and some I remember parts but that’s it really but then there’s those few special films u remember vividly for whatever reason those are the truly special 👌🏻 films, I won’t bore with a list of favourites but Misery is one film I love and have got a few friends to watch as it had such an impact on me, I was glued to the screen! What a brilliant suspenseful film acted perfectly by its cast! 👌🏻. PS agreed Martyrs is excellent genuinely scary it really makes u think and it’s brutal but it was the reason behind what happens that’s most frightening.

I rented Martyrs last October. It has such a reputation I figured I would only watch it once. Gutted, and devastated were words I had seen used to describe it. I felt hollowed out when the credits rolled. It was burned into my brain. I thought about it for months. I bought it this year. I've only watched it once, since. But it lost none of its impact. The second time around, I still felt like I'd been crushed under foot. It's a short list of movies that had that much impact.

This movie makes Martyrs look PG my wife looked away several times. The movie was so brutal & so real. There is a version with English actors voices dubbed over. We were both shook after watching it. 85% on rotten tomatoes INSIDE (2007) Highly recommend

Clairborne's underrated movie,Martyrs is a given&Room was decent in it's own right. Only problem I had is it reminded me again of case that I'd actually even repressed for a time when first discovered? Being few stories that ever made me physically sick learning of it,Josef Fritzl. Sylvia Likens would be among first I can remember&extensive details is why I know for fact why I could never watch/sit An American Crime.

As for horror movies, it was a movie called American Gothic, it was the first horror i saw in full when i was a kid. Not a good movie but it made friday nights horror night for me. On a lighter scale, Monty Python and the holy grail. Couldnt even speak English at that point, but i liked knights and stuff as a kid. It kinda was a gateway in teaching me English and giving me a weird sense of humor. So i owe Monty Python a lot🙂

@imbatman273
@imbatman273 4 жыл бұрын
@@chiefkamachi1 It wasn't that it was scary. The ending was meant to be up to interpretation; one of two things were what she was told, either there is nothing after life, and she's killing herself, because she believed her life no longer mattered due to her whole life having been wasted on this moot cause, or she was told about the afterlife, and she kills herself to get to the afterlife faster, as she wants to experience it.
