I love how they addressed self harm in this. So many people think that movies depicting mental health in a "attention seeking" way makes it seem lesser and like the person doesn't have genuine issues. But this does it in a way where the "attention seeking" was clear and her issues don't seem to be depression or anxiety or her attempting to kill herself.

@Carols9894 жыл бұрын
@James Wilkinson well, yes. Self harming can start because of many reasons, my (thankfully short lived) self harm was because of family problems, basically, I wasn't sure if my dad tried to kill himself and if that was my fault. And I couldn't feel anything, like, my brain seriously went into overload and decided to just- not. It was so frustrating I started cutting the palms of my hands just to feel something. And you know what made me stop? (Besides my therapist going OFF on me). The addction. You start to feel, well, not good, but... I guess I can't explain to someone who never went through it. But it IS addicting from the first cut. And I was terrrified of becoming addicted, so just pushed the brakes as fast as possible on that one.

Self harm is incredibly addictive, you tell yourself that there's a point behind it but only when you get out of the cycle can you see how far you've fallen. I got stuck in the cycle for a year and I see a lot of how I felt whilst I was at my worst in this film. I think the reason why this film seemed so directionless is because self harm doesn't progress you anywhere , it just drags you down. There is nothing to gain from doing it and the only reason that we do so is because of whatever reasons we have made up inside of our own heads. (Which is why we never get an explanation as for what is causing her to self harm, because we wouldn't be able to understand her complex motivations behind it) I think that the initial wound she got at the start of the film was symbolic of some kind of trauma or distress, the doctor told her she needed help and she refused to get it and instead gave into to her compulsions to cut which lead her no where. Because she didn't get help when she had the opportunity, because her friend wasn't there for her she has become trapped in the cycle of self mutilation. Which fucking sucks. If you are having thoughts of self harm or are actively self harming, seek help. We all want you to get better :)

I am a walking DSM-5. I have Body dysmorphic disorder, OCD, Bipolar 2 and Dermatillomania. There's a sore inside my nose that I, myself, have freaking caused, and I can't help but picking it every day. It gets worse and worse and I can't stop. I feel the need to harm myself, I guess this behavior of mine is a combination of OCD and Dermatillomania. So this movie hits differently. It's so scary and disturbing. Sometimes our brains are our worst enemies.
@olliej.27764 жыл бұрын
It's depersonalisation. A lot of people self harm because they want to feel something. Esther took it a little farther than normal, but there have been cases of extreme mutilation. Her arm becoming numb/falling off is representative of how she began to feel so detached from her body, that hurting herself was the only way to keep herself together. I found it most moving when she wanted to cut her face to show what was going on, that she could look in the mirror and see the evidence of the mental turmoil that was going on inside, but she couldn't--because she had to convince everyone else that she was okay. Really sad movie; nothing more ominous at work here than mental illness.

This reminds me a lot of a girl that has the uncontrollable urge to pick at her legs. She's destroyed her legs so badly that they need to be amputated, But doctors can't do it because she'll just pick at the wounds from surgery and it'll start all over again. The urge to pick at her legs is so great that her body ignores what must be extremely intense pain, The wounds on her legs are so bad that her legs can't be saved and she needs amputation, For her brain to overcome that pain the urge must be unbelievably strong. Mental illness is extremely scary

This reminds me of movies like "Meat" and "Swallow". She's A cutter with an high pain threshold,. The fall (on metal) just aggravated her already self harmed leg.

Spooky you should do a video on Pihu! Its not necessarily horror/gore but its pretty disturbing. Its about a little girl stuck inside her house with her dead mom. I swear a lot of the scenes almost gave me a heart attack
