Some spoon carving basics using the axe to carve a blank. Next step is to whittle it down with your carving knives.
I have some cool carving stuff on my site at www.lotsofwoods.com
Make sure you check it out, and maybe like the video or subscribe!
The wood type I am using is Cherry birch, or black birch.
The photo in the beginning and the end is the final product.
Enjoy!

That looks like a small racing axe, you sure know what axe to choose and how to use as well. Glad to be a subscriber, your videos are great.

Very cool I will be watching this many times before I make my husband a spoon for Christmas.. I was planning on using a band saw for the rough shape but I really like the idea of using a hatchet.. so much for personality can be added as it takes it's own shape.. it has a more organic feel to it! Many thanks for sharing!!!

just make sure the axe is very sharp or it wont be fun! A shsarp axe takes off a lot of material easily, a dull axe is like carving a spoon with a rock lol. I have my hatchet almost shaving sharp!

Jeff Ballantyne out of curiousoty what kind of axe do you have I know you mentioned you restored it .but I was wondering what brand it was and the weight of the head. as I use a norlund Hudson bay hatchet that weighs about 1.5 lbs with a 15 inch walnut handle that I made for the axe.

Great Video Jeff, i'm new to green woodworking. Is there a reason why you use dry birch rather than green, is birch unstable wood? Again thanks for taking the time to post this video, love you work!!

Thanks OSSU.Entertainment Yes this piece was bone dry. That Cherry birch was really nice to work with! I have some dried applewood blanks that are dry and I dont want to touch them. I ask myself, do I want achy hands all day? Nope.. haha.

hehe... right. no question, it would be doable but for what price. man I need to carve more again. your apple wood, would go on one of my knife handles! gonna be in japan for 2 months, so I will figure out what wood to get there... they mostly carve from shop bought carving 2x4s, but i got a connection to a countryside potter. hopefully a wood source. good job on these buddy!

nice offer buddy! I don´t know though, if thats worth the hustle. i guess the shipping to Austria would just make the whople deal a bit expensive. please check the shipping for me, and if its reasonable, I´d love to have some and make a special knife from it... maybe using a mora carving blade... love making my own handles for that best value carving knife of all time. hehe! let me know if you are interested in having one made by me, including sheath, for a sloyd-friendship deal. just an idea buddy!
