using wood on the radial plane for spoons is a good way to get a good spoon from straight wood.

You make that see. So easy. I always have problems getting that raised handle but this video shows it better than others. Thank you :)

Randomly arrived but couldn't escape here. He made this look a way easier than what it actually takes.

Any really sharp axe will do the same thing. When I teach classes I try to promote the idea that the skills are most important, the tools secondary. Yes nice tools do help, but they can mislead beginners in thinking that it's the tool that allows me to carve well. It's not I can the same thing with any axe. So I'd rather not say. It a carving axe, designed for this type of use.

It really is a pleasure to watch you working Jarrod, thank you. Just to echo what you said, I have a small German made camping axe that is razor sharp and works remarkably well even though it's not technically a carving axe. I shopped around for ages before finding it.

What kind of axe? I'm female and 65 years old although I have quite strong shoulders and upper arms from bread kneading and massage. I'm looking for a smallish lightweight axe that won't break the bank.

Good skills. An axe is definitely an underutilized tool, especially for roughing out shapes like this. A lot of people would just spend way too much time using a knife or drawknife to do what could be done much faster with an axe. Takes practice to feel confident though. Nice video to show what can be done with an axe.

Looks like a Hans Karlsson axe. Lovely tool, but as he says - it won't do anything for you unless you've got the technique.

I've been shown to chop the crank into the blank first. it's six of one half a dozen of the other i expect, but i think i prefer your method though.

Nice work I love watching your videos. I'm a beginner carver. I have a hook knife, a carving axe, and a sloyd knife. I want to get a saw for general cutting and making cuts like you did in this video. Is there any particular saw you'd recommend getting? Thanks

Cameron Card the tajima folding saws are pretty good, but if you want a saw with some bigger teeth then you should buy the bacho laplander
