Spoon Carving: Tools, Techniques and Tips for Carving a Spoon

Learn the best carving techniques for making a spoon. Spoon carving is a traditional woodworking craft. Like all woodworking projects, there’s more than one way to get to the finished project, and spoon carving is no different. You could carve a spoon with knives, chisels and hand planes. Or, cut it out with a band saw or use power carving tools.
In this case, we visited Vevang Studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to learn about how traditional hand tools and carving techniques are used to make a wooden spoon. Erik Vevang demonstrates how to properly and safely use a few knives to make a beautiful and useful spoon.

I have YET to find anyone who can show how to sharpen a hook knife. I thought we were about to see the process with this guy and he, like everyone else, goes to the straight knife. Irritating!
