I remember taking Chinese Philsosphy in college and when studying Confucianism we learned about how much ritual was stressed as a way to keep society cohesiveness, orderly, and overall good. There is a quote in the antelectics I remember reading along the lines of: "If you are brave without ritual, you'll be unruly. If you're polite without ritual you'll be exasperating, if you are catious without ritual you'll become timid." I don't remember the quote exactly how it was but I remember the meaning of those lines and their sentiments. Structure is a key thing is strengthening your ability to perform task and adhere to routines. Following ritual becomes second nature, to where getting up and going to work everyday becomes like automatic response. Even things as simple as brushing your teeth can be considered a form of ritual.

Watching this 4 days before my first fight, and I’ve got 2 fights in one week. I must say this has given me a relief, nothing different to what I already apply to deal with such experiences (I was touched up by pro and am fighters from the get go, my first ever sparring I got rocked and someone tried to finish me but I survived the rounds) and I must say I’ve applied these things and figured them out on my own but I wouldn’t be able to ever achieve that without soaking any wisdom from you Ramsey. I’ll tag you in my fights once Im done with them see how it went, you definitely played a big part in my mental preparation and technicalities about a fight man, so much respect. Been observing and listening for a long time 🙏🏻

The best psychological state is one where you emphasize your actual strengths, thus a pre-fight, meditative review of your strengths.

If you have a game plan to navigate around your weaknesses and through your opponent's ,a meditative review of that will help too.

Performing a ritual shows your ability to stick to rules. Being able to stick to rules is important for having a fair fight. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Agreed, I think proper preparation absolutely should encompass mental preparedness as well. Coach, greetings from Boston! I’m currently in medical school and am a former (ATA) Taekwondo practitioner as a kid (stopped at red belt when I moved far from my gym) but I always enjoyed more sparing and less of the forms even if it wasn’t emphasized as much as I would have liked. Now I want to train martial arts again and am planning on finding a bjj gym to train on my off days from the hospital my upcoming third year in med school which starts in July. I also want to learn muay thai but figured bjj would be better to learn first since I have no grappling experience. I’m incredibly glad many arts have moved more towards fighting/sparring, however I can only train once a week and my main concern is injuries to my hands, as I need them especially for surgery. How common are hand or wrist injuries in grappling and any recommendations to avoid them? Many thanks and looking forward to training with others again soon! Best, Cedric

Hand injuries are not uncommon in grappling any more so than any other injuries.

Hey Ramsey, hope you're doing well with the current day events. I would like to ask if you have any tips for training without a proper coach. My brother and I have been training together nearly everyday since lockdown began about 7 weeks ago (I live in South Africa) and I've felt definite improvements for myself since we began. I'd only had some CQC training beforehand so I welcomed the idea of actual martial arts training and my brother has been training MMA for roughly 4 years with a focus on kickboxing (he's a greenbelt) and has been in 2 matches in that time. His coach provides videos for drills and we often spar, but since he's not a coach he can't help me to the degree I would want. Do you have any tips or ways to make sure that I progress in my abilities and that my brother doesn't digress in his? Thanks again for all the videos and all the awesome and helpful information, you really help me out alot. Stay safe

P.S. I'm more interested in the ability to fight for combat and defense rather than sports fighting, don't know if that makes a difference.

hey ramsey, I have a question for you. how do I overcome my lazyness? I am a pretty messy person, I hate how my room looks and I am very embarrased when a friend is over at my place. yet I really feel no drive to change anything. I work out every other day but thats about it for my motivation.

hmm this happened to me a couple weeks ago, i drove myself nuts over not doing anything until finally i put some time aside and just did it, and afterwards it was amazing not having the (even just slight) guilt, and just having a clean room, i felt more organized mentally too 😁
