That's not why it's called West Indies Pojo 😅. Christopher Columbus was trying to set sail to India (GOA to be exact) and instead he accidentally travelled to the western part of the world and landed in the caribbean so they called it West Indies/West Indians . The Caribbean has a cricket team made up of different countries called the West Indies cricket team . they include Jamaica , T&T , Guyana , Dominica , ST Vincent , Grenada etc etc . The British brought the Indians which were way after the Spanish colonial days in Trinidad and other islands around. Technically there are 4 West Indies groups but only the English islands stuck to the name . At one point it was considered the British West Indies , dutch West Indies , spanish west Indies and the French West Indies. Today it's mainly referred to as the CARIBBEAN but some also say West Indies specifically as there is the cricket team around representing the region. Big up Pojo

Columbus also saw the indigenous people of the Caribbean( Taino, Arawak, Caribs), who I guessed to him looked like East Indians, so he name the Caribbean West Indies. Also, the East Indians came to the Caribbean as indentured servants, not slaves because they were trying to abolish slavery. The East Indians got paid a little money for their work, but they couldn't manage the work like African slaves, so slavery didn't end at that point in time...

Definitely go to Suriname next. It makes the most sense. Go by car or take a flight (it’s a 1 hour flight for less than $ 200). It’s not super cheap here but the nature is beautiful and the people are friendly. The food is amazing and it’s fairly easy to go to the interior. We also have a great cultural diversity and strong history.

Nice vlog PJ. The history of the West Indies is not about Indians. Used to be called the British West Indies & was named by the British when they thought they were in India because of the resemblance to the place to India and the inhabitants were later called West Indians, after West Indies. The Indians and Chinese were brough to the West Indies by the British Colonizers after Slavery was abolished to work the cane fields, etc. Many were taken to Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. Jamaica has less Indian population than T&T and Guyana where they continue the Indian tradition, unlike Jamaica, where many mixed with blacks and many are still found in certain parishes, like Clarendon, Old Harbor, etc. Surinam is a Dutch colony, with many brought there from Indonesia, which was also a Dutch colony, so they mainly speak Dutch in Surinam. Guyana is a large country in South America, but with a very small population of less than a million. Fun facts. Guyana was Dutch and French before the British took over. Continue to have fun and enjoy Guyana!

The term 'West Indian' came about when Columbus stumbled onto the New world. He thought he arrived in East India and mistakenly called the inhabitants (Amerindians) Indians. Realizing that it wasn't the East but the West, the inhabitants were called West Indians.

The term 'West Indies' was coined by European explorers in the late 15th century, particularly after Columbus’ voyages. He mistakenly believed he had reached India, so he called the Caribbean islands the Indies, differentiating them as the West Indies because he was trying to find India. Indian and Chinese immigrants in the Caribbean were indentured laborers NOT slaves. After the abolition of slavery in the 1830s, colonial powers sought new workers for plantations and turned to indentured laborers from India (starting in 1838) and later from China. They signed contracts for a set number of years in exchange for passage and wages. First arrival of Indians in Jamaica occurred in 1845. Around 38,000 Indians coming to the island during that period. Jamaica. In 1995, the Government of Jamaica proclaimed 10 May, Indian Heritage Day, in recognition of the Indians' contribution to the social and economic development of the country. The arrival of the Indians more than 170 years ago is commemorated in stamps.
