I work in the medical field and there is a condition that can occur they may explain why Griner is the way she is. It basically is an abnormality that occurs while developing in the womb. The person may have testes that didn't descend and therefore testosterone was never produced which causes the person born to have the appearance of a girl. The person usually doesn't question this until they either reach puberty and don't have a period, or when they try to conceive a child and can't.
