In this video, Dr. Milo Wolf reacts to Dr. Mike Israetel of‪@RenaissancePeriodization‬ through a back training session. He breaks down the science around hypertrophy training, including which exercises to pick, why performing the pull-up and assisted pull-up in the same session may not be ideal, the utility of a warm-up for hypertrophy training, whether spinal flexion during rows is a good idea and the science around lengthened training for building muscle.

he can still use you as a curl weight so you better be careful because when he throws himself at you, there will be nothing left

Disappoint that Milo didn’t assess Dr. Mike’s blinking as an isometric eye-training technique. Hard to do lengthened partials on these

For anyone over 30, warm up sets are likely needed. I'm 56 and every joint hurts, if I don't warm up I'm screwed.

For deadlifts it's a pretty ridiculous claim that your hamstrings are weak if you can grip it, people grip 600, 700, 800 pound pulls at maximum exertion. It's a pretty balanced lift and your grip and back will fail at a similar time if your grip/hams aren't weak. Same as pullups really. For RDLS and rows sure you there is a point, but the blanket statement is nonsense.

Menno Henselmans had a pretty convincing rebuttal to the assertion that intentionally slowing down the eccentric is better for hypertrophy in his recent video on training tempo. You end up with more time under tension during each rep, but also fewer overall reps compared to a quicker (but still controlled) eccentric, so overall volume, and therefore hypertrophy, remain essentially the same. The other issue is that training with such a slow eccentric in a movement like the squat weakens/doesn't utilize the stretch response which is VERY important for athletic movements in the real world like jumping in basketball. If you can get essentially the same hypertrophy but better overall athletic performance with controlled, but not intentionally slow, eccentrics, what is the value of making them so slow in the first place?

what a pull up does nothing else can replace. You can't do lat pull downs & rows for a year and have the same pull up as you would if doing them regularly. Most large men can barely do one pull up. Assisted pull ups are the best way to train for functional movement in these muscle groups.

So for pausing in the lengthened position, does that apply to RDLs?

Dr. Milo, really liked seeing you speak on Dr. Mike’s training. Makes me feel good knowing Dr. Mike has good advice and that his training makes sense as I look to his training and discussions for training tips. I would be curious if you would ever make a video on John Meadows’s “Mountain Dog Training Style?” I’ve never heard many speak about his style other than him. Each workout has the 4 phases: pre-pump activation, explosive, supramaximal pump, and high-intensity stretching.

I'm gonna need an overwhelming amount of evidence for not warming up. Sure it doesn't cause hypertrophy but it definitely helps my joints and muscles feel better during the workout.
