One of the first things you need to do when preparing your bike for the track, is to change out your engine coolant. Most track day organizations will require the stock coolant to be exchanged for track approved coolant. This video is part of our track day prep series of videos.

about how often should we be changing our coolant? I got my 2020 R3 with 3k miles, in 2022. it's my only mode of transportation and i think it's the only fluid left that hasn't been changed since it was new. i look forward to changing out the slippery green coolant with blue coolant. at a stop light i saw some fluids on the ground, it was green coolant and even my boots slipped on it. be extra careful getting this on your tires, it's extremely slippery

I flush the bikes with tap water, no need to do that with distilled water IMO. As for running the bike with the radiator cap off I do not do that. These systems are pretty small which makes getting the air out using the method I show easy to do. After you ride the bike check the level in the over flow and adjust as needed. - Brian Van

after removing the old coolant did u put water or just let it sit and just put your new coolant? and what about the reservoir? do i have to put on max or there are procedures when it comes to reservoir? need answers thanks
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 3 жыл бұрын
I do rinse the system out with water and drain the water out before filling the coolant. Pull the reservoir off the bike, drain it and clean it up before reinstalling it. Once you reinstall the reservoir you will want to fill it to the cold line. Now you need to heat cycle the bike then recheck the level. I would also recheck the level in the reservoir after the first ride. Hope this helps. - Van

You need to make sure the air is purged from the system and also check to make sure the fan is plugged in. If it worked before you changed the radiator (and you reused the fan that was on the bike) I would expect it to work with the new radiator if you have it properly installed. - Van

I ran that in my Busa during the winter but it heats up and turns on the fans for a while anytime I'm in stop and go traffic. Drained it and flushed it all out till clear distilled water came out then refilled with distilled water and water wetter and now she runs cooler. I see a nice drop when riding interstate but u really notice the water wetter doin its job in stop and fo traffic. Fans barely kick on and if they do they don't stay on nearly as long. End of the day most any of them gets the job done as long as your cooling system if functioning properly. Important to remember the coolant should be changed every 2 years on most bikes. Here in Michigan we have below freezing temps in the winter so I prefer to use Engine Ice in our bikes because it won't freeze unless the temps are below -27 degrees F. IMO this is the way to go. Brian, can you answer this please. I have an 18 R1 and a 19 R3 which I've bought parts from your store. Regarding engine ice, my research shows that while Engine Ice has a higher boiling point and anti-freeze properties, it has a quicker temperature exchange for hot and cold, meaning it heats up fast and cools fast where as OEM cools slower and heats up slower. This tells me Engine Ice isn't good for stop n go and more for track? Is this your experience? What are you using for your street bikes, if you have any. Also I live in Texas for reference.

So today i'm changing the oil and i'm at 8 quarts and I still don't see oil in the window. The filter is on. The oil bolt is in. There is NO oil is leaking but I still don't see oil. Eight quarts is for sure over filled. I start with 2 and let it settle for a minute then check the level. If you can not see it on the stick or through the sight glass add another 1/4 to 1/3 of a quart and repeat. Once you see it in the operating range run the motor for a minute then turn it off to let it settle and recheck. Once you do a successful oil change make not of how much oil it required, this will make the process much easier the next time. - Van

If you noticed this after you changed the coolant I would top it off and recheck after riding. Make sure you check and adjust the level when the motor is cold. Also best to check the coolant with the bike standing straight up and down. If you have not serviced the cooling system at all I would add a little and recheck after riding. If it is low again you need to remove the fairings and take a close look for leaks. - Van

can you use coolant for cars like the brand Peak and use it on bikes?
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 6 жыл бұрын
If you are riding it on the street you can use standard coolant like Peak if that is what the manufacturer recommends. Always best to consult your owners manual before moving forward. For the track we recommend Engine Ice (also works great on the street). If your bike came with green coolant you can continue using that if you ride on the street for sure. - Van

On my Kawasaki Z900 the overfill container is a pain to get to .. you need to take off the tank .. then the air box .. and then parts of the engine ! .. no way im doing that .. I got a big suringe with a long tube .. much easier to just suck the coolant out with the suringe and hose :)

i just did it with my dad. he has a S1000RR and it's the same process. you will need a "one man brake bleeder" which is a bottle with a hose that attaches to the brake bleed valve. there is a bleed valve on the front too. just attach the hose, loosen the bleed valve, open the reservoir cap, and start pumping the brakes. and top off the fluid in the reservoir when it's half full, so there's no air pockets. it's very easy. when the bleed bottle clears up with the new brake fluid, you'll know it's done.

If you watch the video you will see I remove the drain bolt on the water pump which is the lowest point in the cooling system. Removing this will get you as close to completely draining the system as you could without removing the engine etc. If you don't understand what you are looking at it is best not to leave comments that can confuse people looking for help with their project. - Van

I like moral people. There are lots of moments in our lives when we are involved in things that have us on honor systems. Wheree you are making decisions or giving answers (taxes,etc) where you decide..am I going to do the right thing or the wrong thing? Check this, the right thing is ALWAYS the harder route. That goes with everything in life. Not trying to insult people when I say, you have no idea how important this kind of thing is and how it effects society. Real men do the right thing. They tsake the harder route. Twerps would dump it n the lawn or down the toilet. Its one thing if you didnt know better...

I did that and plugged everything back up but the fan wouldn’t kick on and the overflow tank started bubbling and even squirting a little. What should I do replace the fan because it never kicked in? Or the thermostat. Was using Yamaha yamacool fluid blue. Help please
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear Жыл бұрын
You need to make sure the air is purged from the system and also check to make sure the fan is plugged in. If it worked before you changed the radiator (and you reused the fan that was on the bike) I would expect it to work with the new radiator if you have it properly installed. - Van
