What distinguished Nadia's performances was the dedication to perfecting her entire body's lines. Not just a free cartwheel, the perfect free cartwheel. After all these year still believe the uneven bar routines of both Nadia and Olga Korbut are the most thrilling and beautiful I have ever seen.

Current gymnasts can't hold a candle to the grace of gymnasts from 70s-80s

Just like how the 80s and 90s gymnasts can only dream to be as athletic as the new girls.
Despite its low D-Score compared to today‘s standard, I have always thought that the Korbut vault is a piece of art.

Remember the equipment back then was arcahic compared to now so much harder for higher level back then.
@corystajduhar2 ай бұрын
@@unknown-lf6zxTechnique and coaching and training techniques are also factors. For example, Tatiana Gutso competed on the same old vault and did a perfect double twisting Yurchenko which was infinitely harder. Also, people talk about the old floor having no bounce, but nowadays, there are people doing super high full-twisting double backs and triple fulls on cement and hard wood floors. The sport has evolved and also the knowledge of how to perform these crazy difficult skills they do today. I have seen double layouts on both grass and gym floors.

when Nadia was competing in the 70s and early 80s the highest difficulty level for a skill was .4 or D not like it is now 1.00 or J though there's currently only 1 trick rated J the triple twisting double back tuck on Floor exercise named the Biles II though the most Simone Biles has been credited for that move is .8 due to a step out of bounds at the US Olympic Team trials in June

Hun, you don’t lose any credit for a skill if you step out of bounds while landing it. Not to mention the fact that she’s landed it in bounds plenty of times
@archiculturenaturetravels91114 ай бұрын
You seem to understand about as much about gymnastics judging as you do about punctuation. Steps out of bounds are not deducted from the difficulty score. They are a neutral deduction taken from the final score (difficulty score + execution score). The only way to lose the value of an acrobatic skill is to land on your butt rather than on your feet.

Nadia is amazing, but she still lost to Elena Mukhina in the 1978 World Championship. Elena Mukhina won five medals at the 1978 World Championships in Strasbourg, France. She won the All-around gold and beat Olympic champions Nadia Comaneci and Nellie Kim, got the Team gold, the floor exercise gold, and the balance beam silver. Then there's the Mukhina flip that was banned because of how dangerous it was, but Mukhina did it with extreme grace and skill. I would have liked to see her compete against Comeneci in the 1980 Olympics, but due to her coach and the abuse she received to perform harder skills she broke her neck. I know Nadia got perfect 10's in the Olympics, but Olga Korbut performed just as well if not better and didn't get perfect scores. Mukhina didn't get perfect scores either and still beat Comaneci. The judges have shown themselves to be biased time and again based on which country the athlete comes from.

For some context, today’s point system makes no sense when reviewing this time period. It would make much more sense to say what the skills were valued at the time. Those vaults were out of 9.9 and 10.0 at the time. It really makes no sense to say what these are rated today (A,B, C….) when they were scored entirely different. Most of those skills were revolutionary for the time. Saying, a “double pike rated D” makes no sense for this video. Those D scores are the current values for these skills in 2024, and make no sense at all for analysis of the skills in this video.
@hazelnutspred33484 ай бұрын
But that’s the context. The whole point is to analyze those skills in today’s code. There’s plenty of videos on this channel that do the same thing from different quads across the sport

Nadia has a tendency to cowboy the landings when tucks are involved. Then again, from the looks of the video, she seems to struggle to stick landings. Doesn’t fall flat on her rear, but cowboys landings, lands in squats, and struggles to do the perfect legs together pose when landing. Though her bar work and aerials are just beautiful. Like a previous commenter said, it’s like she just floats.
@owensmith75304 ай бұрын
There used to be no requirement for legs together landings, at the time it was entirely acceptable in the code to step back with one foot for landings. It has been argued that the modern requirement for legs together landings puts more stress on the joints leading to more injuries.

@@owensmith7530 Didn’t know. Thanks for telling me. Learning is good!

@@SPDYellow Thanks. Personally I think a small step back on landing looks nicer artistically, it lengthens the leg that steps back and is a continuation of the movement. A dead double leg landing is jarring both visually and to the body.

It's about more than jumping higher. Not Simone's fault. She's not responsible for how our culture has become impatient and focused on stripped down difficulty. Modern audience would probably yawn at Nadia.
