The reason why this deal had to happen this week is because Knicks needed to sign DaQuan Jeffries, Charlie Brown Jr and Duane Washington during the offseason in order to use their salaries to balance out KAT's salaries. All of them got $1 above minimum salary as part of the move and a huge salary bump as a result. For example, Daquan Jeffries got 493K last year for multiple 10-day contracts and was looking at being waived or a two-way contract before getting 2.46M guaranteed money. You can say Knicks exploited a loophole in the CBA, but they didn't break any rule for sure. If they waited, they won't be able to do this trade until the next offseason or they'll have to give up more players, neither is a good option.

This was a brilliant act of front office work, same as the 6 team trade that Dallas pulled off to get Thompson to the Mavs. *BUT* I dont think KAT is worth all of that work... thats my problem with the trade. They're in a messy sale right now, and no matter who wins, neither ownership groups wants to pay that second apron tax. This trade is so funny to me because when the Wolves traded for Gobert to pair him with KAT the majority of talking heads and fans called that a terrible idea. In the end Knicks got a great starting 5 but lack bench. Wolves give up little in starting but gain more depth. Wolves in the plus just because of Donte. That’s why it took Donte to get the deal done. Wolves wanted him when the Knicks signed him. Chris Finch said our Owners are ok being in the 2nd apron. They did it for depth and defense against smaller guards and toughness. Our defense was the best and just got better with Donte.

The reason they traded for KAT was because Julius Randle didn’t sign the 181M dollar extension this summer. The players they had was more then enough to fill in the center role until Mitchell Robinson got back from recovering from his ankle surgery this summer. The Knicks were not worried about Joel Embiid or anyone long as they had a defensive anchor at center.
