I learnt this when I was 10 years old. I watched the last little league worlds and couldn't believe how BAD the umpires were ......and the catchers were doing their CORRECTING back into the strike so massively .....I couldn't watch. The pitches were going over the batter box line ....and called strikes. NOPE .....TIME FOR CHANGE .......NOT TELLING US "IT'S A NO-NO TO DRAW A LINE IN THE DIRT .....WHEN IN FACT THE BATTER IS CORRECT .....particularly when an umpire can be making $350,000 annually!!!! Let the computers do the deciding. At this last U.S. Open ....NOT ONE TENNIS PLAYER IS EVEN HESITATING WHEN ANY CALL IS MADE. It is ON WITH THE GAME. NO DELAYS. Only a matter of time before the red faced, veins in neck popping out amateur umpire responds in all caps saying you're not allowed to argue balls and strikes... (then put a period, then spell period in all caps and put another actual period.. Just the dumbest of the dumb 🤣🤣) Sickening, in this day of technology with pitch Trax and similar gadgets.. You're not "arguing balls and strikes"... You are simply informing the umpire they've made an error., that's all there is to it. Most of us in our jobs get informed we've made an indisputable error, we're contrite, apologetic and try to do better. With umpires due to the decades of balls / strikes being 100% judement they view you as the problem and not themselves, and simply toss you out of the game. They make the error, and they force someone else to suffer negative consequences (nice gig by the way)

yes egos have a lot to do with it because its the control thing, they really are meaningless in games because the baseball players are the stars of the show, but the umps actually think they are in control of the game. It applies to a lot of people who really don't have jobs but have that little bit of control and nothing else. rent-a-cops, security guards, people like loading dock managers. You know how many rent-a-cops and building security guards i run into who want to throw their weight around when im doing deliveries, until i call up the property managers waiting on their stuff and the little nothing-guards get their necks stepped on.

Problem is, a ruling is final even if it is wrong. The ump can't backtrack because he saw it as he called it. He can't unsee what he saw. Now, a player gets angry and the umps hands are tied.

When I was a boy growing up in Boston there was a centerfielder by the name of Jimmy Piersall who was a bit crazy and had a temper. Once after getting a call 3rd strike that was waaaay outside, Jimmy promptly reached into his back pocket, pulled out a water pistol and squirted a circle around the plate. He was immediately ejected and had to be restrained. I'll never forget it.

@@shugo1047 Of course there are going to be missed calls, umpires are human. But AI is not ready as evidenced by what is happening in the Atlantic League. The first clip of Ichiro drawing the line is an immediate ejection at all levels of baseball from LL on up through MLB. Umpires don't get emotional, they simply are not required to tolerate temper tantrums by spoiled players. My belief is that it would be difficult for a single umpire to intentionally make bad calls because the rest of the crew would know it. Can you document any umpires being bribed in modern baseball?
