He was a twat, but he was no wimp. Anyone who gets in a boxing ring is tough -- one shot with some bad luck is enough to kill someone. He knew his veil of invincibility was shattered and he wouldn't be able to win the rematch.

NOT A CHANCE!!! Naseem was very very elusive and hard to hit! There's a massive difference between a journeyman fighter with a 16-11 record, vs Hammed, who never hardly got hit ever! I don't buy your excuse for him one bit! Guy was all identity and had no heart! When he finally lost for "Mohamed," (said on his shorts), HE REFUSED A REMATCH!! NOT A CHAMPION in my book! @@brianchristopher4666 Seems a very strange dispute you two are having. However it's a fact he was taking a lot of punishment in his later fights, and a rematch against Barrera would most assuredly have have been a lot more damage, to both his brain and ego. In previous fights Hamed could count on his amazing reflexes and fast hands to compensate for his frequent technical sloppiness. In Barrera he encountered a very well-rounded boxer who was near technically perfect who, although not as fast as Hamed, made very few mistakes and had the patience to figure out Hamed's typical movements. A great fight.

To add to this, I remember watching this fight at the time & my impression of it was that Hamed was a cocky wee shite who had never come across anyone who could match his speed. Hamed relied on fighters coming forward with tight high guards which gave him plenty of opportunities to counter and use his athleticism. Barrera stayed just on the edge of range putting Hamed in a position he wasn’t used to. Barrera became the counter-puncher with Hamed increasingly becoming more desperate as he realised not only that he was losing the fight but that he was going to have to create his own openings. This was new to him and he wasn’t able to adjust. A great fighter but Barrera showed he was greater.

What I'm seeing that barely ever gets mentioned is how many body shots Barrera sent. Naseem was so elusive because nobody ever went for his core. But Barrera did. The counterattack strategy, it's a good one, but others have tried that before Barrera and failed. What made it effective was to not always try to go for the head, but to lessen his mobility by going for the core. For those who are unaware, the core is not called that for no reason. It is essential to pretty much any physical activity, to various degrees. In this case, throwing punches, enabling leg work, but in the case of Naseem, moving the upper body like it really shouldn't be permitted. He has gotten away with it a lot more than he should have, but people never really punished him for it, so good on him. Once you start going at it, moving the upper body becomes less effective, more painful, slower, suddenly the head becomes heavy to move around, suddenly punches are incoming way faster, you don't know why… It's basically the same dynamic that makes low kicks in kickboxing/muay thai/mma so effective : get the legs, the core becomes more vulnerable, the head becomes more vulnerable, get the legs and/or the core, the head becomes more vulnerable.

Interesring. Fighters in general pay too little attention to body blows. They absolutely suck the life and energy out of a fighter. And there are usually frequent chances while they protect their head. If a fighter throws a big hook and misses the other guy has a couple milliseconds to slip in a body punch when the gut muscles are slack. Knock the wind out of them they never really get it back. Mixed martial arts fights are wrecking the art of boxing.

Love this fight, and quite frankly, Barrera's finest hour - a masterclass. I'd seen Naz's rise from the amateur ranks in the UK and he always had the cockiness which was encouraged by Brendan Ingle. However in all his fights he had never come up against a seasoned Mexican fighter, and seeing how this weight was dominated by Latino fighters it looked like Hearn was being very picky with his fights. In short, Barrera gave him a boxing lesson and humbled him to the point of retirement - he lost the hunger to fight after that, only appearing once more in a low level fight in a leisure centre.

In the words of Angelo Dundee, “Some guys beat some guys”. Barrera was indeed a veteran of the ring who studied his opponents & learned from his mistakes. He had Naseem’s number from the opening round. Throughout his career, Naseem had made up for his sloppy style & lack of professionalism with his natural attributes, speed & reflexes. Barrera prepared well, taking advantage of Naseem’s aggressive style with masterful counterpunching. He clearly deserved the win while Naseem, just as clearly, deserved the loss.

Barrera fought one of the most intelligent fights ever. He knew his opponent intimately and refused to open himself up in any way to Hamed's biggest weapons. He was incredibly well prepared. He fought behind his jab and never threw any wild shots that Hamed could counter with his speed and reflexes. By comparison Hamed didn't prepare adequately, he neglected his road work, his stamina wasn't what it should have been, he didn't have the team behind him that made him what he was (Brendan Ingle specifically) and he simply did not take Barrera seriously enough. Barrera is the real thing. Hamed had almost every gift that a boxer could possess - but he didn't have resilience. After this fight Hamed was broken and he never came back. One more fight (in which he was awful) and then he retired.
@philpriestley3869
@philpriestley3869 Жыл бұрын
@Don juan Oh no - I couldn't disagree more. Naseem Hamed was not a fighter that I liked - he was arrogant and conceited, and genuinely not a nice person, but he was dangerous. You just need to look at some of the excellent fighters that he fought and his punching power alone was a serious threat. He had incredible reflexes and an unorthodox style that lots of people struggled with. He could move in and out of right and left handed stances, he could fight straight on, his power was in both hands. A lot of people got baited into trying to knock him out and he thrived on that because he was a very effective counter puncher and his huge power could end a fight very quickly even if he was behind. Barrera had the discipline to respect that and fought a very tight, disciplined contest that didn't allow Naseem to get off at all. Naseem underestimated Barrera by comparison and he got absolutely everything that he deserved. Don't get me wrong I will always rate and praise Barrera above Hamed - but to suggest that Hamed was a cake-way is wrong - he was a dangerous fighter and Barrera knew that.
@philpriestley3869
@philpriestley3869 Жыл бұрын
@Don juan Come on - Augie Sanchez, Kevin Kelley, Manuel Medina, Tom Johnson were all fights with Americans. Power with speed knocks people out irrespective of race. I absolutely agree - the Mexicans produce fierce fighters (some with granite chins) - but anyone who doesn't respect the power and speed that Hamed had doesn't know boxing. He was banging against middle weights in sparing. I'm really sorry - I'm not doubting or disagreeing that Barrera was a superior fighter (I really have Barrera as one of my personal favourites of all time) - but suggesting that Hamed posed no threat is silly talk. It also detracts from a really outstanding victory.
@Aerojet01
@Aerojet01 Жыл бұрын
@@philpriestley3869 Sanchez was a club fighter, Kevin Kelly a journeyman and Medina was passed it. Tom Johnson was worthy world champion. Kelly and Medina gave Naz difficult fights. I agree, Naz was an explosive puncher, with brilliant timing, fast reflexes and extremely athletic, but he had limited conventional boxing ability. Against lesser or slow fighters, he could afford to make mistakes because his reflexes would get him out of trouble, especially when he would leap in with punches and leave himself out of position and chin unprotected. Barrera punished him nearly every time he did that and picked holes in his weak defence. He negated his power by moving to his left against Naz's classic southpaw stance and gave himself enough distance to catch Naz with counters. Perhaps Naz underestimated him, but Naz was outboxed, out jabbed, outworked, out punched, out classed and out manoeuvred by a superior boxer who wasn't intimated by his ring antics and trash talking, could take it and dish out, and had the technical ability to give Naz problems.

Hamed had confidence, power, speed, he was unorthodox, and a good domesticated fighter. Unfortunately his strengths turned out to be his weakness, lack of respect, huge Ego, God complex. And he lacked technique for when the knockouts don't happen. Barrera was Great, but managed to have humility, his ego was right sized. Hamed didn’t have a plan B. Once his style was worked out he was clueless. After a defeat,true champions go away,regroup and come back with an adjusted fight plan and have a rematch. Hamed only new one way and when it no longer worked he retired

I kind of had that notion as well. The fact that other quality fighters would pick up on this and perhaps use it against Hamed. Barrera did his homework, studied his opponent and worked the plan. Great champions indeed make adjustments during the fight. This was a fight that Hamed not only lost on a physical level, but also on a mental level as well.

@@generatorx It's more than that. Kevin Kelly was ultimately the first boxer to expose Hamed's weakness. Although Kelly was KOed, he floored Hamed 3 times during the 4 round fight. People weren't going to pay money to watch Hamed fight journeymen & low level opposition. Hamed HAD to step up in class and once he did, there weren't going to be anymore easy fights. Had he continued boxing after the loss to Barrera, he would've had to face guys like Eric Morales, Juan Manuel Márquez, & potentially Floyd Mayweather. (a super featherweight at the time) I don't see Hamed beating any of them.

@@Jim_Jones_Guyana Agreed, especially if his weakness is exposed and better fighters get wind of it. Can't imagine Hamed dropping his hands and sticking his face out to Mayweather.

Your detail in the breakdown made this well worth revisiting. Naseem just didn't know how to deal with that loss. Outclassed by an honest, no nonsense strategy, his showboating and antics brought him payback at a pivotal point in his career. Naseem couldn't be the same man after this fight. Naseem was world class but fragile. Barrera was unstoppable this time.

Hamed was not world class, but, at best a fringe contender. He plateaued at domestic/european level. His first fight in his plan to dominate america was against a faded kevin kelly & that didn't quite go as planned. His team, promotor & himself cherry picked barrera because they thought he was way past his best & on the slide.......they espected hamed to walk through barerra much sooner & more emphatically than junior jones did & as barrera would be having his first fight at the weight, they never even considered a possibility that Barrera could offer any resistance. I don't believe hamed was fragile, he took big shots from barrera & managed the distance....the knockdowns in the kelly fight were flash knockdowns from accurate punches that caught hamed off balance. hamed was pious & deluded...genuinely believing that his god was on his side and therefore invincible. he should have had the humility and courage worthy of a champion and took the rematch....win, lose or draw....he would have earned respect.

Hamed went on to cause a fatal car crash when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving at 100 mph, the crash that he caused, and in which he left a man and his wife trapped inside a vehicle with horrific injuries fighting for their lives, as he fled the scene of the crash. He served 15 months in Prison for the crime and was stripped of his MBE honor that was previously awarded to him. Just so everyone knows the measure of this guy.
