Think a little bit before you buy a safe. What do you really want/need it for? A safe like this is meant to protect your contents against: fire for whatever it is rated, children/teenagers from getting to your firearms and against the smash, grab and go petty thieves. Anyone bringing tools with them to "crack" a safe are going to get into almost any safe (except ones costing 5 times more) within the same small window of time. As you say, don't put anything extremely costly things into these. These are basic security/privacy cabinets that will be fine against 99% of the population.....once you address the reset button (cover it) and the key access hole....no answer there. Also, place the safe in a corner that limits pry leverage to the non-hinged side. I just bought a Fortress (Heritage made) 24 gun, fire resistant, mechanical combination lock safe at Lowe's for $328 + tax. I know it isn't a Fort Knox but it will provide the level of protection I want.

I think of my safe as more a deterrent than an actual safe. I've got wifi cameras all over my house. You can install cameras all over your house for 100 bucks these days. One camera points right at my safe. As long as it keeps my stuff locked up long enough for me or the cops to get to my house I'm happy.

I bought a new house and finished some odds and ends there as I advertised to rent it. While it was vacant, someone broke in and stold all my tools and personal property that I didn't move. They ripped all the new copper plumbing out of the basement and even stole the water meter which flooded the basement. Then they tried breaking in again and again for the copper plumbing in the wall. The copper plumbing I put in piece by peice. That experience led me to be a freak about home security.

Almost all safes are about delay, not absolute, iron-clad, there's-no-way-to-open-it security. I hate to inform you of this, but the vast majority of home safes -- even most of the more expensive ones -- would not provide much security (delay) at all when up against a expert who comes prepared to open them and who is given sufficient time to do so. A safe like this could be just fine if you consider other factors such as the security system in your home, average police response times in your area, concealment (how easy it is to locate the safe), etc. In my area, the police will be at my house, on average, in about four minutes after my alarm is tripped. So long as my alarm system is well nigh impossible to defeat, this gives a criminal very little time to do anything; basically, this makes my home vulnerable to very basic smash-and-grab operations; and even those would be very risky. Assuming that the average police response times could be plotted according to a normal distribution, about half the time you could expect the police to arrive sooner than four minutes -- not a good bet for the intruder. If I had to break into this Heritage safe quickly, I would probably just push it over and apply a big pry bar. Optimistically, this would probably take about a minute to do, perhaps less with two men and two pry bars at work. So, if intruders knew exactly where the safe was and exactly how to open it, I'd say this safe would be slightly risky in that unlikely scenario. All security, however, should be viewed in a multifaceted way. Sophisticated, educated criminals are actually pretty rare in the real world. Further, such people probably would not be too interested in breaking into an upper-middle-class home in hopes of grabbing emergency cash, jewelry, and a few guns. They would probably want to know ahead of time that there was something in your home that made it worth the risk and effort.

The thing here is burglars dont typically bring tools like that, and between the real time cameras and the delay of trying to get the safe out of a locked closet.... cops will be there before they get anything out of it.

My Sports Afield safe has a brass cap over the reset button so that has taken care of that security issue. It was cheap($350) for the 18 gun safe so I wasn't expecting a whole lot. It's actually really nice for the money and probably the best of the cheaper saves. Comes with nice carpeted shelves, a nice organizer on the door and a bolt down kit.

With posting this video you just told the kid down the street how to get into it. I ordered the 60x40 and will beef it up accordingly. I guess it doesn't matter because all they have to do is go to you tube and watch other vids. BTW I bought a Cannon from Costco 3 years ago and is basically the same construction. Thin walls and doors. The people that bought that house paid a lot for me to leave the safe there. After walkthrough I showed them the upgrades I made to the safe and they were very happy. If you think about how to mount it so it is harder to pry open and up against the sidewall (not the hinge side) and bolt the he** out of it you will be better off. Don't just bolt it down bolt it to the side and back walls. Also buy an upgrade for bolting it down, even if you have to re-drill the holes in the bottom. If you still want more security take the pre hung interior closet door down and put a exterior metal door in its place with longer screws all the way around. They make these to go with most door patterns to match the rest of your interior doors. Mount it so it opens out (away from the safe) then put a dead bolt w/o a door knob. I other words you need to grab the key to pull the door open. That will slow them down as well. You may have to get one that swings the opposite way of the safe door for good access. You can take the hinges off and have them welded so you can't just drive them out, just don't loose your key. You are not going to keep a good thief out but the harder it is to get into the better chance they will leave before opening it. Just beware they may come back. If you are an NRA member they give members some free gun insurance. Not a lot but it is better than nothing.

This guy simply doesn't get the point of this safe. This safe will make it impossible for 99% of people with an hours time to open it up. The safe he wants cost $25,000 and has glass plates that lock closed when cracked. People think that a safe will open when cracked and it's not true. Safes are designed to lock closed when tampered with. This safe bolted down is secure as shit for $600 delivered. Almost all crackheads think you need a torch to get into this thing and because of that won't even look at this safe twice during a robbery.

@hippsgary
@hippsgary 4 жыл бұрын
Where to start... 1) "As you know, I am a realtor." Why would we know this? We're watching reviews on gun safes. 2) You bought it from Costco. They are a box store who has a certain price point to meet. A target price means a target quality item. EVERYONE knows this. 3) The fact that you've owned a Liberty and a Fort Knox doesn't make you a subject-matter-expert on safes. If it did, you would have known what to look for in gun safes. Mentioning the fact that you've owned other brands is akin to you expecting a Ford Escort to perform at a certain level because you once owned a Chevy vehicle or once owned a Dodge vehicle. Every model serves a certain purpose. 4) How did you NOT know the specs and particulars of this model? A quick search tells me that the 6033 has a 40 minute fire rating (meaning that the drywall sheeting and other fire protection isn't going to be that good); the walls are 14 gauge, thus only 0.0747"; and that the weight of the safe is only 450 lbs (another indication of lightweight materials used). 5) When a safe manufacturer advertises that their product holds 33 guns, they mean small, low profile, NON-SCOPED guns. For those who DO have another of ARs or scoped rifles, expect to store half of the manufacturer claims. This too is extremely common knowledge. The fact that you'll probably get a mix of 20 guns with and without scopes in a 32 gun safe sounds about right. 6) The fact that you didn't know you got a backup key reinforces the idea that you didn't research this model before purchasing.

This is a safe that will keep all but the most determined thief out. If the bad guy is in your house long enough to pull off a caper like this, you probably don't have any furniture left either. Most burglaries only take a few minutes and the thief is not going to take the time to figure out how to break into this safe. It will keep the kids out and most burglars. There are still home alarms and insurance if all else fails.

Paul Britton I've seen those videos and if you noticed the safe is usually on it's back where the thief could get the most leverage. Secure the safe to the wall and floor, put it in a walk in closet and the ability to pry it open gets that much more difficult. Like I said if someone has staked out your home and has the time to break into the safe, they probably are stealing everything else in your house of value, including the $2000 safe.

I just went shopping for safes in this price range ($400-$800) and was able to look inside the doors of a couple. To say THIS safe is the only one made this way is definitely misleading. The Bolts on the hinge side are passive bolts - to help prevent the door from being pried open. Really, if someone is TRULY worried about the security of your valuables, are you going to put $1000's of dollars worth of things into a $700 safe? Safes in the price range really are more of a deterrent than anything else. If someone really wants whats in there, they'll find a way.

Regardless of any opinions on how Ben O has presented his disappointment of his Sports Afield Costco safe purchase this video has value. I was coming close to putting this safe in the Costco cart and now that I have seen this video I am not. This video educated me (along with viewer comments) on the categories if you will of safes out there and as most pointed out may or may not be good depending on your needs. Don't quite understand the availability of the key that makes it so easy to get into the safe but I need to learn more I guess? Companies are not bad and no it is not a conspiracy. Education is important and maybe there are but a compare sheet of a companies safe product line with levels of security would make sense? We may think that no one would purchase the safe after they read it but it would avoid videos like this. Also doesn't everything we purchase today have trade-offs based on price? I prefer to just tell it like it is and in the end when we know what we are doing ahead of time and after the fact we feel confident that we were able to do the research, understand and accept in this case our safe purchase. Every industry has standards but sometimes marketing and competition win out and because of that good information is not always volunteered.

So I just watched a video where it took two thieves armed with crowbars less than 2 minutes to bust into a safe that cost over $1,500. Granted they had to lay it down flat on it's back and they had to work it together. A safe that could actually stop someone who knows what they were doing would be in the thousands. This safe will be just fine against the average tweeker burglar but what do you expect for that price point? You want thousands of dollars of steel for $600.

I agree with your assessment of "you get what you pay for" 100%. This falls into a class of products called "gun safes" that are "false security safes". Your assessments of the vulnerabilities are valid, but most safes in this class have enough vulnerabilities to where they should not be relied on when it comes to protection from theft. This particular safe will also have very limited value with a fire. If someone with knowledge regarding safes came about that safe, they would attack it through the top or side and they would either, 1) work to split open at the point of fold/weld, or 2) cut through the 14 gauge sheet metal body. It would take a matter of seconds to defeat. Heritage has started dividing their names because some of the economy safes are so crappy they realized it was making people question their flagships (which are reasonably well made, better than most on their class, but overpriced.) If on a budget, my advice would be to buy a higher end used model as it will be 100000x better than a cheaper new model.

Never, ever, ever buy a safe with an electronic lock. You could also drill a small hole through the door anywhere along the path of that reset wire, and then short the wires together which is the same as pressing the reset button. Easier than trying to fish for the button itself. I assume since you didn't want to show the manual override key, it too is a joke. In fact the whole manual override system may be able to be manipulated with nothing more than a high power neodymium magnet from the outside of the safe. All my safes have combo locks. I love my combo dial Liberty safes but I just bought a Fortress with combo lock, which is also made by Heritage. I'll have to take a good look at the guts of it before putting it into service... thanks for the video!

Wow, and I was just looking at these very safes online, the Sports Afield 6040 executive vault. Looks nice, and at $1100+ the cheapest I found it I was seriously considering one. My main concern from your vid is the bolts, how easily it would be to pry the thing open and with a flimsy door. And, Yes, the fire board should be whole pieces not scraps glued together, goodness gracious, oh but the facade looks great lol. I guess the choice for me still lies with either a Browning, a Fort Knox or economy Steelwater. And with the Steelwater, I love their vids on how tough they are to break in but they don't mention anything on the security of the electronic lock's access key, and I always wondered how secure they could possibly be in comparison to regular (4-sided or cylindar) security keys. From watching your vid I might as well just buy a laundry sack and put a keep out sign on it. Or spend the extra cash and buy better. Most safes come with a replacement guarantee. But when you think about it, what are you getting replaced but the same crap safe that didn't protect your stuff the first time, and nothing to put in it. The only guarantee I find important is one for the lock, because they do break down.

In all honesty, the fire board in these is just to slow down torches. Your guns are 7 times more likely to be stolen than destroyed in a fire. It's actually kind of a silly thing to worry about unless you have tens of thousands in firearms...and if you did, wouldn't you insure them? Yes, this is a glorified gun cabinet. But fire isn't that much a threat and anyone worried about it would be better served to invest in a sprinkler head right over the safe.

Thanks for a review on the safe that I was thinking about buying. Yeah, I know these aren't Fort Knox or Liberty safes but I just did not know how bad, rather how weak, they are made :(... Well, I guess I go back looking at Fort Knox. I rather look twice and buy once as safes aren't things you easily move around or rid off. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. These safes are still being sold, they are listed at $1200 and go on sale regularly for $600. I call them gun cabinets - not safes. This video, despite negative reviews, is worth watching.

You still got it? I’ll give you $40 for it! Really thought you were getting a door made with 1” thick steel? Do have any idea what metal costs? Fire protection, it doesn’t have to be one solid piece or even glued together nicely to survive the rating. The hinge side bolts don’t have to be bolted to anything serious, you can’t break them off or pry the metal far enough to bypass them. The average person would take hours getting in this thing. It’s worth it’s money. If not, I’ll bring you $40.

Cheap quality aside, there are design issues with this as well. The key and the reset button (if you can in fact hit it with a shim from the outside) are pretty glaring problems that are simply design choices and not price restrictions.

Any safe in this price range is going to have the same short comings. You shouldn't expect a ribeye steak for a hamburger price. I have both a Heritage safe and a Fort Knox safe. My Heritage safe is built like a tank just like the Fort Knox. Both safes weigh around 1400 pounds, have relockers, sargent and greenleaf locks, and all the rest of the bells and whistles. You bought a purpose made safe for a mass market retailer. Don't fault Heritage when most of the other big safe companies do the same thing.

Not sure when you made this but I bought a heritage safe from Costco a month ago and believe it or not, yours is the cheap shit. My door DOESNT bend, I have no dinky key or lock. The bolts are also much more solid. Next, You are working from an open door. The thief would have to open the door to get to what you are working on. Lastly, your average thief will NOT waste his time. He wants in and out unless you announced to someone you have gold bars or something in your safe then he'll work at it. Bolt it to the ground, lock the door, buy he actually name brand Hertitage and be done. Oh yea, my bolts that don't move are actually welded. You bought garbage.

The other thing you're missing is that the metal of the door, the walls, etc is so thin, you could get in there with an ax in about 20 seconds. Maybe even a crowbar. One good swing, then just pry it.

ok guy I get it, nothing is full proof! its about deterrence. Most crimes have an element of opportunity and convenience. For example, when you look at fences in a prison, the barb wire is to slow the escaping prison down not to prevent the escape. Secondly, professional designer of security look at things in a philosophy of increasing response time and decreasing opportunity. Plus you got it at Costco! Hello what did u think you were going to get.

Absolutely true. If it were flat on the floor and they happened to have couple 4 foot pry bars with them. But most low to mid range safes, those under 1500 bucks, can be breeched that way in under 10 minutes. Most thieves don't want to carry around burglary tools like that, attracting attention. In fact, according to a police office I know who has been working burglaries for LAPD for 10 years safes are almost always breeched with the home-owners tools. He strongly recommends locking up pry-bars, hammers, shovels, drills, grinders, etc in job boxes.

Most people know that when it comes to safes, usually, the more they cost, the better they are. Sure, there are always exceptions but that's pretty much how it goes. Of course, far too many people that want a good safe can't really afford a good safe. If they bought a really good safe they wouldn't have anything left of value to keep in their safe. It would be a glorified "important paper" cabinet, lol. The other day a high end model Liberty safe was sold at an estate sale from a somewhat wealthy person. Well, there were 5 people at the estate sale for the safe before it even opened. Safes are expensive for the average person and good safes are really expensive for the average person. Good luck to all the "average" people that are trying to get a really good safe for a really good price. Good luck and God bless.

If you are serious about protection, get the old large jewelry safes that have double thick steel walls and multiple plated doors. the problem is they are much heavier than most people would want for a home. All the gun safes out there, even the one with 1/4" sides are still susceptible to determined thieves. Most paranoid gun collectors will buy a high end safe and enclose it in a steel lined closet or safe room, with a monitored security system. It's not uncommon for the amount of protection to be worth more than the safe contents.

Heritage safes have not been made in the US for at least a few years. They are now imported from Asia. Heritage used to have a great reputation when the safes where made in the US. I have a Summit Denali made by Heritage safe. It is the same as a Heritage Ultimate with a slightly lower fire rating. My door is a 3/4" thick solid steel plate and the walls are 3/16" thick. This bad boy weighs 1800lbs empty. But, the gov't makes it to easy for foreign markets do dominate and thus we lose good American craftsmanship.
