Great video Victor! I've watched the hobby evolve, from buying packs in 1967. I bought a collection of vintage cards as a kid about 1969 for $2.85, a shoebox full of 1950's and early 60's cards. We didn't have card shops or shows. I just kept buying packs and sorting them until about 1975. Took my cardboard apple box to college with me. Found a local coin shop that had 1 revolving case of vintage baseball from the 1950's. Then I found a flea market. None of my cards had any real value at that time. Just fun to go thru and look at the stats. Then in 1978, I sold my commons and duplicate stars to a guy advertising in the newspaper, $78. He showed my many beer flats with sets he started, and his 1952 Mickey Mantle. Something I didn't know existed. He showed me a price guide that said $300. We kept in touch and started a Club that met Sunday nights and traded cards, bought new cards as a group for a discount. I drove 400 miles to Minneapolis to my first show in 1983, met Warren Spahn, Bobby Richardson, had a great time. Spring of 1984 I promoted the first show in the Fargo/Moorhead area. Opened a card shop in Bismarck in 1986. Sold my share moved to Nebraska during the big boom. I've always had a show inventory, semi-permanent collection and a permanent collection. I don't' do as many shows anymore, maybe 4 a year, getting close to retirement from my job. A hobby is very important to a retired person, so I have that going for me. I've enjoyed every minute of it. Seen how chasing the dollar has burned a lot of people out of the hobby. Like Ed said, watch the games, enjoy the games. I didn't even know it was hot at the Chicago national until I saw videos that night. Too focused on the cards. Love the hunt.

Victor this video was an absolute grand slam! Thank you for the kind words! A lot of the thoughts you echo in this video are fears I have voiced over the last several years. There is nothing wrong with being a speculator in the hobby, but when that culture and the overall flipping culture becomes the dominate force in the hobby over collectors it causes concern. Also concerning is the number of people not watching or enjoying the sport they collect. That is one hill I will die on. I can't fundamentally understand collecting a sport you don't watch or worse openly hate on which I have seen in some circles. Doesn't make a lick of sense. People often talk about trying to get the young kids into collecting or into collecting vintage cards. The way you do that is getting them to love the game and to get involved in watching the sport and becoming a fan. That will lead to wanting to learn more about the history of the game and the history of your favorite team. Being a fan of the sport you collect is IMHO an essential key for bringing in more collectors into the hobby.

Great Episode Victor and awesome seeing you again at the national. Huge congrats again with your book. Always fun to hear your thoughts on the hobby. As with everything in this world Boom and Busts are inevitable no matter what. Im very optimistic about the hobby especially after it survived and really ended up thriving after the recent bust after covid let up. I am on the thinking that we are still in the beginning stages of what took place when I was a kid 1986-1993 ish. I hope the boom continues for years to come but one day no matter what a bust will happen again. Thats the nature of life and anything that has to do with money. I am a collector who does love the concept of value and I collect in a way that I think has the greatest chance of being worth more in the future than the present. I also never buy cards just for that reason alone but for me I wont buy a card that I see a future that its worth less than today. Now ofcourse I will be wrong on many but I will love the card just the same as when i bought it regardless if they go up or down. We both go about collecting very differently and thats what makes talking about it so fun. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your opinions. 👊🤙🤙

💯Victor. This was well done and agreed. I’m with you here. I’m a low end collector. The most I even spent on a card was 400. Sometimes I have a hard time buying 50-100 cards and don’t do it often. I like my base. For example I love my Gunnar Henderson flagship rookie just as much as one of his high end rookies which I would never buy. This hobby has gotten too complicated and it very tough to navigate at times. Im going to be picking up your book some time this week. Thanks for sharing.

Great job Victor! I am more into the picture of the card vs the player on the card. Tha's just me and I'm happy on how and what I collect. Also, I have for years adhered to not spending more than $100 on a card - there are millions of cards to choose from - PS I hate black & white photo's on cards - doesn't matter who is on the card or how "valuable" they are. Have a great one!!!

These days you need to make money and have a PC because many cards one may want are often unaffordable for many !!! I separate the 2 by flipping and selling up so I can afford more valued PC Cards !!! I truly appreciate just rarer cards!! Low pop !!! But I often go 2 shows and get standard rookies that are graded 9-10 .....It has became a chest game for many !!!I I still spend most my time in 2 and 5 dollar boxes !!! Its so true what you say about nastalgia !!! It keeps me motivated !!! I really appreciate your views my friend !!! Thank you always!!

as a new and young collector i’m not even bothering trying to go for the money because you have to spend a lot in the first place and i’m just trying to find my favorite players. it’s very hard for me to support this hobby because my local trading card shop has been exposed for resealing cards. i just bought like 5 different jimmy butler cards recently though since he’s my favorite player and his “special” cards or whatever are pretty affordable. i don’t think i’ll ever be able to get my fav rookies wemby or caitlin clark cards easy though😂
@true_rcsАй бұрын
Yeah, be careful out there! Sounds like you have a good handle on things. You can always consider base rookie cards of Wemby and Clark. They are affordable especially if there not graded. Thanks for sharing your thoughts I appreciate you tuning in 👍

Great video. I think you hit the nail on the head with the pop reports. Print runs don’t bother me at all when it comes to rookie cards but I do think there’s a valid argument to be made in favor of lower print runs on other cards.However I never understood the whole pop report thing. If I have an Upper Deck Griffey RC PSA 9 or a Wemby Prizm PSA 10 why do I care how many times this card has been sent in to be graded ? 🤷🏽♂️ I just care about the grade

Great video BTW. I was so nervous in Feb 2020 seeing peeps submit stacks upon stacks of Yordan & Gavin Lux base Topps RCs and then the same happened for Wander RCs. I knew there was going to be way more supply of graded copies than demand in the end. It ended up being great for collectors. I thought that the same may be happening for Wemby Prizm RCs, but perhaps he is going to be a generational type player? It is certainly fun to watch it all play out having no skin in the game. Victor, do you get the same revenue from the Kindle & print versions? I'm thinking about the Kindle version, but I will purchase the physical one if it nets you more profit.

Great content Victor. Love your insight. You’re my “go to” for info on rookie cards and I’d like to pick your brain on a card I picked up. I recently purchased a TOPPS NOW 2016 #353 Aaron Judge PSA 10 which marks him hitting a home run in his first career at-bat. When I do research on what his Topps Now rookie card is the one that keeps popping up is the 2017 #87 card. This is the first card with the RC shield on it and is in what is his rookie year. The 2016 TOPPS NOW card I have has the “Call Up” moniker on it. However, the card I have to me matches the prerequisites to be his true rookie card. -1st card available in a set that’s available to the masses -he’s in his pro uniform -he’s played a professional game What are your thoughts?
@true_rcs2 ай бұрын
Great question John. The 2016 Call-Up features him as a late season September call up perhaps. However, according to the rules set by the PA this is to late in the season to create a true RC. Cut-off date is typically mid-season. THis is why topps will leave certain players till the following year. I do however, consider the 2017 Topps Now #87 a TRC. I appreciate your support if you need further info please feel free to email me.👍

I need to weigh in/vent. The gambling side is problematic. If I'm honest it's what drew me back in. However, the bang for your buck is becoming so atrocious that I'm stepping back out. I doubt I'll ever fully leave but I'm really getting sick of being ripped off opening wax. It's just too expensive. A great box now compared to 6 years ago is one where you recoup 70% of the value. Mostly you lose 80-90% of your money and that hurts when you are spending $200 here $500 there. Just like in 2020 when I pivoted to hockey I'm going back to where it started in late 2017 with local sports which still deliver value. There are no life changing cards available but the floor is much higher than the American sports. That might be the best model. Get rid of the manufactured scarcity like non auto 1/1's and all those crazy non auto parallels which are a base card with a little stamp on it designed to trick the mind into believing it's scarce, when it's really the same thing. Whoever invented serial numbered cards was a genius. It's a mind trick. Most non-hobby people with a functioning brain would ridicule the idea that a 1/1 is somehow special and worthy of 30X because the manufacturer put a stamp on the card - a card with the exact same image as the base version. I'm on a roll, Victor. I believe that the ultra modern section, which perhaps makes up the bulk of the sales volume in the hobby, is being driven primarily by breaking addicts, flippers, and a few people with deep pockets who can afford to rip wax and lose. That model is not sustainable imo and there has to be a tipping point. Maybe history will repeat itself ( I learnt something with that take of yours) where the value is no longer there, there are too many money men ( too many bosses and not enough workers is the polite phrase), and 99% of cards continue to slowly drop in value - especially in real dollar terms. I'm not sure how you can fix it. I guess it just fixes itself like it did in the mid 2000's until 2017. Collectors/wax openers leave, then the flippers/money men leave, wax sits, eventually print runs come down, value returns and the cycle recommences. P.S. If you read all that I'll buy you a beverage one day.😀

Speculation has always been a part of the hobby. The only main difference between now and then is that its more socially acceptable, its cool, and alot more money is flowing into the hobby than ever before. Its not all bad, because its helped boost the hobby to a more respectful and lucrative level. I'll agree that the love of the game definitely helps tie sentimental value to the hobby, though. However, "pop reports" is based off strictly artificial scarcity. Theres millions more of those 1989 UD Ken Griffey Jr rookie cards in ungraded condition and still plenty of unopened product of 1989 UD, as well. Its very possible that supply will eventually outweigh demand. Its so bad now that people are paying premium prices for damaged Griffey UD rookies. It's gotten way out of hand. People are idiots and dont know how to shop for true scarcity. I mean, compare that overproduced rookie to an original rookie photo or photo slide of Ken Griffey Jr, and you'll see which is most rare. Photo slides were actually taken at the games and most of those are believed to be 1/1. Scarcity does matter....if you care anything about owning very desirable and valuable collectibles.

Here's another thought. Perhaps a bad one. I don't know. I think the Griffey card is only a good card for a collector who has some emotional attachment to the card and would like their purchase to retain value. For a non-collector - someone just in it for the money - the card is a bad buy, just like Brady is a bad buy. I genuinely believe that cards are not genuine investments and those cards will not outpace inflation if bought today. You have to have a collector mindset to park money into those types of cards. If you do not have a collector's bone in your body you are better off chancing your hand at the hot potato game that is ultra modern - which is what seems to be happening currently. The serious money goes into real estate and stocks.
