Hello, rookie card-collecting friends! I'm asking myself the question: What years constitute the vintage era, and more importantly, does the timeline move? In this video, I'm explaining the six different eras of sports cards. I hope you enjoy it!

I like the attempt to create some segments Victor. Having lived through it I proudly embrace the Junk Wax era :P For the most part, I think there are some reasonable breaks, I would extend the "post vintage era into about 1995 since the strike in 94' caused some major changes and forced the manufacturers to adapt, but there's some room for nuisance there for sure.

Thanks Carlos! I think what makes it tricky is that there is some overlap into and out of era's. Always appreciate your insight and tuning in.

Victor, I do not have any great insight on the eras topic, but I found your commentary here to be thought-provoking, informative and helpful! Another way is to simply refer by decade, so that a collector might say they primarily collect cards from the 60's through 80's, for example. Take care, my collecting brother! 😊👊

Great video and good explanation! I think vintage will have to eventually be on a moving scale, but the historical context will always be important! The difference between vintage vs antique vs classic cars is important, but we don't have that language in cards yet...will have to develop it to apply it

Love this video. I prefer fixed timeline. I agree on the hard stop at vintage being 1980. I'm leaning toward extending junk wax until 1994 or 1995. Regardless of where the lines are drawn, it gets people thinking.

I thought I was a vintage collector because I'm old. I'd no idea everyone was talking about how old the CARDS were.

Just a slight buzz across a few channels nothing crazy though. Just a fun hobby topic and I'm trying to wrap my head around it for my own understanding.

Team Fixed here. I’d like the terms describing each era to stay constant. Similar to how Boomers will always be ‘49 through ‘64. The issue is with the term “vintage” itself - some use it as an adjective, others use it as a noun. So if we want to keep vintage as an adjective to describe anything older than ~15 years, then maybe let’s not title any era “vintage” to avoid the confusion. We run into the same problem with the word “modern.” It can mean something contemporary, or it can refer to a fixed era. In philosophy, there was modernism, then postmodernism, and then apparently metamodernism. In cards, we have modern, and ultra modern, and then what? All this to say I enjoy the titles you’ve given to the various eras - i think that’s the smart approach!

Team Fixed. I’m from Mass Produced Era and starting year 2 of my collecting reboot. I wasn’t sure how to identify 1992 through 2019. Apparently these years can fall along 3 different eras. I figured 2020 to current was an era onto itself, but didn’t know this Slab Era could go pushed back to 2017. Mass Produced should NEVER be Vintage. 😂 Thank you.

awesome video Victor... i view the same way. pre1980 as vintage. 2017 to present... slab era!!! will kids collect cards in the future...???using an analogy, we stopped teaching automotive classes and woodshop classes... now its all STEM classes and robotics. younger kids wont wants classic cars, they're moving towards... the "i want electric cars". the future is moving away... opening NFT packs is becoming the norm. everyone is glued to their phones. no one takes polaroids, its becoming all digital. digital currency... digital goods... digital cards. digital licenses, digital wallets, digital.... this and that... no rookie card is created equal!!

Good stuff Victor but I do think you can be variable and fixed. For example, I consider any cards I have from the 1980s to be “vintage cards” because they are old enough to be called vintage. However, I have no problem with you labeling the “vintage era” up to 1980. So my Topps 1984 Mattingly Card is a vintage card to me but it’s not from the vintage era. The eras are fixed but the word vintage is flexible. Problem solved 🙃

"The eras are fixed but the word vintage is flexible" Glad I read the other comments because this is what I came here to comment. It's analogous to cars 25 years or older qualifying for antique plates. It's now then just a question whether it makes (stylistic) sense to use vintage plates for certain qualifying cars, etc.

Victor, besides some of the prizm sets is it my misconception that the Reformation Era is the most dead era? Why is that?
@true_rcs
@true_rcs Ай бұрын
You know I think you may be onto something there. IMO it's fair to say that the Reformation Era is the most dead era. I believe its because there was a mass exodus of hobbyists. Also, Panini gaining the licenses disrupted many things. Card manufacturers going bankrupt or being bought up. It was dark time in the hobby.
