What Is An Oblique Strain?
An oblique strain, AKA a side strain injury, is when one of the abdominal muscles (internal or external oblique muscles) becomes frayed, torn or detached. Oftentimes from the lower four ribs, it is painful to breath, cough and laugh. This is treatable, with recovery ranging from weeks to months with the correct treatment plan.
Oblique strains tend to hurt more with twisting, tennis, baseball, and golf. Reaching overhead or behind your upper back may also create abdominal/ pelvis pain or discomfort.
What is a lower abdominal strain?
Lower abdominal strains are slightly different that oblique strain. The location of a lower abdominal strain is right above the hip region, as the abdominal muscles insert into the pelvis. Lower abdominal strains are often misdiagnosed as sports hernias and hip impingement. Lower abdominal strains can also feel like strained muscles. Tightness and stiffness that is hard to stretch out.
Some people note lower ab strains while twisting, running, deadlift or getting up from a bed.
The last thing I’ve ever wanted to do was write up my own experience with a sports related injury, but alas, here I am!
Many of you may know that I play baseball; I’m an avid baseball player, so I train as a baseball player.
Surely, with my knowledge and experience, I was training adequately to avoid injury, right? Wrong!
I learned a very hard and painful (not to mention scary) lesson about having an oblique strain. It was such a learning process for me that I felt compelled to share it with you.
I’ll start by saying it was extremely frustrating not being able to find ANYONE who could help me through this horrible injury.
Fortunately, my job is to provide others with the rehab/therapy for their condition; the sad thing was that I’ve NEVER treated anyone with an oblique strain. I was the first case for me!
I was forced to experiment on myself using available research on abdominal wall injuries. Long story short, I overcame the oblique strain to play baseball again and still play today.
I can run as fast as I want, throw as hard as I want and most importantly, I can sneeze again!
To not forget how this condition felt, I wrote this article about my recovery. I hope it assists you mentally and physically through any issues you’re having.

Hello, so i think i got a lower abdominal since it feels sometimes tight and sometimes loose that i have to think about it when i walk and i have to be careful. The injury happened 5 weeks ago, i started doing pt lile 2 weeks ago and it feels a little better, i have no pain it just feels weak and loose, how long do you think i would be able to play soccer again? In terms of rehab im doing pretty good in terms of regaining strength but i sometimes still feel it loose, the exercises i have most difficulty with are leg raises and hip extensions when i am laying down do you think its an abdominal strain or something more? Your channel is very good, keep up the good work

That’s a good question. I wouldn’t know unless I did my own assessment. I can do that if you’d like. Set up a Discovery Session so I can get an idea if I can take you case or not. Link in video description

Can you please share your current situation, i am also suffering with lower abdominal tightness mostly near right side around pelvic bone and sometimes in the middle I just naturally feel like i am not able to or should not do leg raises or crunches stuff which might put strain on my abs muscles Sometimes i feel like the pain and tighness is almost gone but it comes again after a while

Hey Sebastian, need help with adductor/groin pain and lower ab pain, above and below my pubic bone. Been hurting for weeks and hasn't been healing. Im considering a PRP injection to promote healing. I have football camp starting next week and want to give myself a chance for the PRP to heal my hip before I get going again. What would be best for my case. Stretching? Strengthening seems to hurt and no real benefit has be realized. Lmk what you think not sure the best thing to do.

Sounds like you may not have the right coaching of how to do specific exercises and stretches. Nearly everyone we see with this gets better without injections or surgery… but we also examine before suggesting interventions. Set up a Discovery session if you’d like help

I have really sharp pain in upper groins and pelvic area on both sides but left side More when I lift my legs. It much more painful when I do it sitting down. My hips feel fine when I squat or do lungs. It’s just raising my legs when the pain comes. What would you think it could be and what exercises would help? I’ve been dealing with this for 2 years and it’s started to get debilitating. Hard to get in and out of my car. Hard to put shoes and pants on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sam. Honestly to answer that question correctly I would need to assess you. It is commonly misunderstood that there is a single treatment/ stretch/ exercise for sports hernias BUT success comes faster and with less flare ups if there is customization in place. We would love to help if we can. Please reach out. Just use the link in the description for the video and we can set up a session to get started.
