Great video. Good advice. With over fifty years of photography experience I would say that for beginners; first, utilize the equipment you can afford. Second, BE THERE! Know when to press the trigger. Many of my best photos when taken at the right time with the worst equipment.

Spot on Jack, it takes time to acquire the tools in your toolbox. I have been filling my toolbox for over 20 years, my 600 f/4 lens is early 2000 vintage and still works great. So don't get discouraged if you can't have all your equipment right away. The important thing is to keep shooting, it is the only way you will get better images.

Solid, solid advice. I just recently replaced my D750 with a refurb D780 from Nikon refurb (the D780 was 10% off the regular refurb price, which saved me $500 from the regular retail price. It had 1 click on the shutter. Not kidding and it looked brand new). I wanted better high ISO and hoping for better auto white balance, but I have to say, the D750 is no slouch in low light work. I shoot mostly high school football, and dollar for dollar, the D750 is a great performer. I've had lots of cameras thru the years, and the D750 is EASILY my all time favorite. Only real downer is that the buffer isn't all that big. And I agree on the len choice, the 70-200 is easily my favorite lens, since it's soooooo versatile. I find I always pick that lens up first, since it's not very heavy and gives me good results. Currently have a Tamron 70-200mm G2 f/2.8 and it's a GREAT performer, with the built in stabilization modes, it's a tough lens to beat. Love that lens. Unsung hero is a Tokina 300mm f/2.8, which I also have. It is wicked sharp and CHEAP!!! And, last but not least, I recently picked up a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 for a good price off a guy. He said it was just too heavy and he got sick of lugging it around. It's gonna be my new Friday night football lens, so, we'll see if I "hate" it after the game of carrying it around. :) But my first impressions are that it IS heavy!!!! As always, love your videos and thank u for uploading them!!

It sounds like a lot of great information, but I’m still at photography 101 as I learn the jargon. I’ve started taking more photos of my kids sports such as : Soccer,Rugby, Football & Volleyball with what I had laying around which is a LUMIX DMCZS50. I feel like the zoom is pretty good & still shots are okay, but speed is a no go. I would love to take better photos and more speed/action shots. Where do I even begin? Expertise,advise & suggestions welcome. Maybe my current cameras body is good, but need a new lense 🤷🏻‍♀️ Update- I went to Best Buy and asked a lot of questions and have learned more and more. Thoughts on the Sony a6400?

Hey Jack...picking up photography again after a 15+ year layoff. Love the videos, and am working my way through them. This year I'm the yearbook advisor for the high school I teach at, and I had a question about shooting night football, as it gets dark up here in WA a little earlier. I'm using a D500, with a Tamron 70-200 f2.8....can I use a 1.4x converter to get more reach, or would the f4 just not be enough light?
@JackBeasleyMedia
@JackBeasleyMedia 3 жыл бұрын
High school fields are tough. Some are OK, others are terrible. I’m guessing if you go to f4 you’re going to be down around 1/500 - which I wouldn’t go below. Brightest area of the field are the sidelines up to about the 20 yard line. Darkest are the end zones.

The problem is that you’re trying to shoot sports in dark gyms and on dark fields. I see tons of HS yearbook kids on the sidelines with their school kit lenses and I wonder what kind of shots they’re getting. For me, I always buy used when possible, generally a generation or two old. You don’t want to get something that no longer is serviced by the manufacturer. Also, avoid “grey market”, meaning anything shipping from outside the continental USA.

The Rebel cameras are entry level and a good place to start learning photography in general. For sports, however, it’s not optimal. If you're just starting out in sports photography, I'd say the Z5 is a pretty decent starting point. It can take sports photos if you put it in AF-C, use the highest frame rate level (4.5 frames per second), and use Dynamic Area autofocus. It will also do video in Full HD (1080p) up to 60 frames per second.

Is it good enough? It's probably a decent start. I had a Z50, but used it almost exclusively for video. I did try it out once during a game and I thought it was OK. Frame rate was a little slow, but not a big problem. I think the real question is, do you want to stick with DSLR and f-mount, or move on to mirrorless and z-mount? The world is moving to mirrorless and if you're near the start of your sports photography journey, you probably want to go that direction before you get too invested in DSLR technology.

@@JackBeasleyMedia I don't have many lenses for my Nikon d70s, so that wouldn't be a reason to stay with DSLR's for me. I'm mainly concerned that the Z50 might not be as fast as a DSLR? Also because of the viewfinder in mirrorless camera's. Which is obviously different than looking through the lens with a DSLR. I read somewhere the mirrorless viewfinder is slower? If the Z50 is going to be fast enough to take decent shots of horses in action outside in daylight, that would probably be the best move then I guess? And because you have had the Z50, do you have any idea if the battery life of the Z50 is indeed as bad as I hear people say? In comparison to a DSLR. Sorry, English is not my native language, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
@JackBeasleyMedia
@JackBeasleyMedia 2 жыл бұрын
No, it won't be as fast and you'll get blackout in the viewfinder between frames. It's not an ideal sports camera. If your budget is around $1000, I suggest you save some more and try to get something around $1600 on the used market. A used D500 ($1600 renewed) or D750 ($1400 renewed on amazon) are good options for DSLRs. If you want to go the mirrorless route, you'd be looking at a Z6ii ($1700 used), at least for sports.

@JackBeasleyMedia
@JackBeasleyMedia 2 жыл бұрын
The D610 is an entry-level camera, so it's autofocus and drive speeds, along with its low-light capabilities are not as good as the higher end cameras. Having said that, if this is your first foray into sports photography, it's still a good starting point. You'll likely find, however, that your photos will appear "noisy" inside dark gyms and outside at night. Another thing to consider is going mirrorless instead, since the industry is headed that direction. A used Nikon Z6ii might be a better way to go.

My most recent camera was unfortunately stolen in a burglary, but also not ideal for the type of shots I would like to get. For myself, and probably many others, social media resolution is really adequate, but I want the tight focus depth that a 2.8 lens provides. can a D7200 be any good for sports and casual photography?

It's fine to start with. You can upgrade later on as you gain experience. You'll have greater success in daylight conditions with that camera. It will struggle under poor lighting conditions.

@@najibbrot3600 The next step up might be a used full-frame camera like the Z6ii. The fx mount lenses will still work on it. I recommend you convert to fx lenses over dx at that point. You could also stay with dx lenses and get the D500, again used. But, mirrorless is the wave of the future, so you might want to jump over now.

*_On a budget?_* Then don't buy the _current_ version of long lenses and bodies. You can get a *_Canon 1D Mark IV_* camera for $1000, and you can get a *_Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L_* (non-IS) for $1400. The Canon 1D Mark IV will give you ten frames a second and an 18.1mp Raw file, which is only 2mp smaller than the Canon 1Dx, the 1Dx Mark II and the 1Dx Mark III, all of which only give you a 20.2mp Raw files. Older models can be a bargain.

I shoot with a 7D Mark II cause I still can't afford a 1DX and it works out great with a 2.8 70-200.

I think it may be OK to start and to learn basic photography, but you're going to want to move up to something more suitable, sooner rather than later.

You’re probably fine for outdoor, daylight sports but you’ll struggle indoors or at night.

I have a friend who's a photo editor for our local daily paper. He told me that in order to get REAL GREAT pictures, instead of upgrading your body, buy good "glass"....2.8 etc. I currently still shoot with my D700 and had a job to cover an air show. I had one image that I took of the Blue Angels flyby......let me tell you, the glass was ok but the image was super sharp! and after I viewed my specs on that image on my computer, that was taken with my D700! Body may be older....but she still puts out!
