I seem to have a meniscus tear on my left knee, it is from doing 200 rep calisthenics squats, i am a racing cyclist and i am 45, can i continue to ride my bike if i stop the squat exercises? I am in pain walking but its not excessive, on the bike the pain lowers once my body temperature warms up but there is still discomfort, its more of a dull ache when riding the bike, im also now taking a glucosamine supplement is that the rite thing to do?

@@stuartmclean3843 The general rule seems to be that you can continue any exercise that: 1. Does not cause a significant increase in pain while doing the activity AND 2. Does not cause an increase in pain and swelling in the 24 hours after - make sure to check the delayed response But that said, if you are a racing cyclist you will be very good at suppressing pain and not really taking note - I find that any athlete who does high intensity or endurance sport tend to not have a reliable pain system so if it is not getting better it might be that the cycling is aggravating it regardless of it not being that painful. Also, don't do high intensity sessions if it is a fresh injury - go easy for 4 to 6 weeks (you physio will be able to better guide you on appropriate times depending on progress)

I tore my meniscus two years ago, it was the worst 12 weeks of my life as far as pain… I couldn’t walk, drive or go up stairs. I went to ortho surgeon and he suggested surgery, I was a week from going to have surgery and all of a sudden I started to feel better, in the meantime waiting i really spent a lot of time resting it and icing …and walking very carefully I ended up canceling the surgery and I am here to tell you My knee feels amazing… I slowly started to move my knee and do some light exercises…. From beginning to end it took 3-4 months, I was 70 years old at the time. I am so thankful I saved my meniscus and living life fully again

I am 58 and this is month 10. I sadly had to go back to work after 2 months of the injury. I''ve rested it as much as possible, but I"m a teacher. It's tough. I've had months of it feeling better...then I up my activity and I"m back in pain and swelling.

I have been dealing with a meniscal tear for over 6 months, I have seen A LOT of orthopedic surgeons as well as physio therapists, and I have done A LOT of research as well. And trust me, there has NOT BEEN A SINGLE doctor who has guided this properly as she did. Especially everything about the rehab she told. There's is SO MUCH misguidance regarding this matter on the internet as well as in the hospitals. And she answered every single concern and question very well.

Not an expert, but be careful with anti inflammatory medication. A lot of recent studies say that they potentially break down cartilage tissue.

I have a minor meniscus issue and this is without doubt the most comprehensive video on the meniscus. Everything you say is crucial in the recovery. I had already worked out what causes my pain, like not twisting or swinging my legs sideways. It’s as if you’ve had a tear yourself and are speaking from experience. Keep up the excellent work.

I agree … I was told to do bridges (lying on floor and raising my torso) … found that so painful, so stopped , as even pushing my foot into my shoe was painful! After weeks of physio … in which time I was given more gentle exercise…. I went online and found this podcast. I guided myself by the amount of pain I was feeling , and now realise it was the correct thing to do . I’m not quite perfect yet , but can walk comfortably and do the normal things . This has been great confirmation of how my knee was reacting with meniscus damage … thanks!

Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people because an upsetting event occurs in their lives taking them by surprise, unexpectedly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. wonderful presentation. As a 72 year old athlete who has had both acl and meniscus tears more than once i have found out that I can still perform pain-free though occasionally have some discomfort by doing the things mentioned in this presentation for the past 40 years or so. I've avoided surgery twice when recommended and find my knee with no surgery but proper constant rehab and exercise to have been most beneficial.

im not sure exactly but i have worked continuously with strengthening exercises, take some general Triflex supllements, wear knee support braces when doing activities such as tennis. Knee still has some occasional discomforts. i generally stay away from nasids.

@@omstygomsty my first tear was acute and had a piece removed back then surgery was more invasive. i have avoided surgery due to non acute tear and would try other pt, protherapy treatments, supplements such as glucosamine condroyton, msm which i found to help. I am not a doctor you should see one for sure for your injury i am just a long time athlete that has had numerous injuries but manage to keep being active with minor aches etc.

I have never seen anyone in the medical field explain anything so thoroughly. My doctor only allows 5 minutes for only one question allowed , A chiropractor just worked on me for 1.5 min, then went on to the next patient. People boost about our healthcare in Canada, but we are rated at #30 in the world.

I have found this very interesting as I have been managing a meniscus tear in both knees for at least fifteen years and exercise is definitely helping me. I am 76 and am still playing tennis weekly and doing a stretch and tone class weekly to keep my core and legs strong. I also walk regularly.

They probably disliked the video because they are in agony and need immediate relief. It's painful to watch a 30 minute video when they are in severe pain. It's like watching a 30 min video on how to survive a parachute skydive failure, but you only have few seconds left.

I teared up on the last part of the video because of your last words! I am a Professional Dancer for 20+ years. I experienced pain, tightness, soreness on both my legs when i was on my cruise ship contract this year 2022. It Turns out i have meniscus tear on both knees. Had an operation on my right knee because my doctor said that my left has minimal tear, that it doesnt need operation just therapy instead. My right knee has the worst tear as per my doctor after my surgery. My surgergy was succesful. But the hard part is Therapy and recovery. 3 months of therapy and still i feel discomfort and pain. starting to lose hope. Depressed.... thinking my therapy does nothing at all. BUt after watching your video... it gave me enlightenment. Now i understand that i need to have more patience. Thank you so much for letting me realize that its not the end of my career.

Never lose hope! Keep on with your physical exercises for your knees and do meditation (you can do it) and I know this sounds crazy, but you've got nothing to lose; gently massage your knees with olive oil (2-3 times a day) and speak, yes, speak to them with affirmation of great love and gratitude for the 20+ years of dancing and living and the many more years of dance that are here.... tell them you know they will (or better - that they ARE healed!!!).🙏 Do this enough times and you shall see the positive change. Look up Dr. Joe Dispenza 'Blessings of the Energy Centers' and also his Morning and Evening(night) Meditations. I know this will help you.

I am a Disabled Veteran and just found out I have a meniscus tear & osteoarthritis in my left knee. The VA Hospital offered to do a partial or complete knee replacement but I refused both. I was in so much pain that I did let them drain the fluid & give me a Cortisone injection to help with the inflammation & pain. They told me a meniscus tear does not heal and if I don't have the surgery then there was really not a lot of options left for me. They did provide me with a knee brace with metal on each side & they leased a cold compression leg sleeve for me to use for 30 days. I use both everyday several times a day but my knee continues to swell, burn & it's painful everytime I do a little walking in my home or outside. I am so so glad I came across your video. You have given me more information than what I got from two clinics at the VA Hospital. I will start doing the light exercises you show in this video and I pray I for any kind of relief from this pain! If you have more specific exercises please let me know what they are.

Taking MSM, amino acids from meats or eggs, and protein powders for body builders daily for example is a big help for me, too. Today? I’m fine, but for my injury it took a year of careful attention, and thank God I was retired. Now, back in the gym for the next level in strengthening those muscles at a comfortable rate. Drink lot’s of water.Thank You.

Yes...they also confuse plica syndrome w meniscus tears apparently. It's sad when you have to wait over 12 weeks for an MRI to confirm pain! Anyway...stay positive and know there are so many of us struggling w knee issues too 😊

This is easily the best video I have found for advice on how to start healing and preventing further injury. Other videos I've seen either tell you to start exercising right away or are surgeons telling you that you're basically screwed but to get surgery anyway. It's great to see a video that is about being proactive.

Huge thank you in so many ways! I just suffered a recent medial meniscus tear from such an unusual injury. I’m always in sports, lifting, yoga, etc, but recently while kneeling in a deep squat, I experienced a small lock when attempting to stand and straighten up. With some slight force in attempt to unlock the knee, I heard a pop that left my knee in pain for a week or so. Over the period of a month, I began to experience odd occurrences in my knee with locking and during a basketball game, it locked up completely for about 2 minutes. After a trip to emergency, I was referred to an orthopaedic surgeon and a physio, but left without a full diagnosis, just told most likely my meniscus was torn. My appointments were a couple of weeks away, and coming across this video has eased my significant fears of all the worst things my brain could think possible! I especially learned a lot and now have a very good understanding about what is happening anatomically and functionally. Thank you so much! Great video and a great reminder that injuries happen, but we can come back from them with some professional help and some extra love!

@@saminaafzal810 my surgery is still about a month away. My recovery so far without surgery has been very successful and pain free when I move in the sagittal plane and as long as I don’t bend my knee and internally rotate the lower leg, otherwise, I get a deep discomfort. I was told because of the locking I was having playing sports, that surgery would be necessary to remove or suture part of the meniscus to repair it. I can tell in yoga that there are still some issues I’ll need to address, but with some rest and also good walking and exercise, it’s been doing exceedingly well and still allowing me to do most of the things I love!

I hereby declare this THE best video on the entire internet! In all seriousness, I wish I had discovered this before undergoing surgery for a minor meniscus tear seven months ago. I have only recently been able to walk pain free and my knee is significantly worse than the several years before surgery when I was dealing with the tear. I realise everyone's experience of surgery is different, but mine has been extremely disappointing. And particularly the surgeon's unwillingness and inability to help post-surgery. I guess my advice would be to get several opinions before deciding on the surgical route. And ask about post-op aftercare availability before committing to a surgeon. Mine basically didn't want to know about me.

Thank you for this video. I learned so much more from you than from my internist and orthopedist. Initially he said I had arthritis but when the corticosteroid shot didn't work he said I needed a total knee replacement but I'm currently can't get it done because my wife is ill and I need to take care of her. Four days ago I started using KT tape to help support my knee. I used their KZbin video to learn how to support my joint. All pain has gone away which is allowing me to rehab and strengthen my joint. I had already figured out uneven pavement aggravated the joint, including walking uphill and downhill. Also twisting made it worse. I believe the extra stability from the KT tape will help me get the muscles supporting my knee to strengthen and allow the meniscus to heal. Thanks a million.

I had a bucket handle tear at 16, and my knee was totally stuck. The doctor actually did repair it, and sew it back together, rather than trim it. But now I have a small tear in my other meniscus. This is helpful. Thanks!

It's been a year. I never went to real consistent physical therapy. Still having a lof of pain and the MRI shows tear has progressed. Not that I'm retired, I'm going to make a committment to go to physical therapy.

As a retired osteopath, and medial meniscus tear sufferer, I found this to be a mine of information for those without vocational knowledge. Thumbs up from me! All I would add is if returning to running maybe light jogging using the fore foot landing as this takes a lot of stress from the knee compared to heel landing....works for me.

68 year old male, meniscus tears in both knees caused me to stop walking 8-10 km/day. Very painful. Dr gave me 3 courses of cortisone injections over an 8 month period and received advice from a specialist to get both knees replaced. After approximately two years my knees are normal with no pain and no replacement surgery.

Thank you for the clear and descriptive information about meniscus tear. I got a medial meniscus tear a month ago, the first doctor I saw said that I needed surgery, I sought a second opinion and I’m glad I did. It’s been five weeks now, and I’m feeling much much better with exercises that I’m doing to strengthen my knee. Everything you said makes sense. I am a 70 year old male who does 5000 to 20.000 steps a day depending on what day of the week it is, I am active till dark o'clock each day ! I have searched the net to find a fix for my right knee which is very sore, had the x-ray and there is no wear and tear, so obviously I have torn something? Then I come across your blog, a lady with so much knowledge in helping the nation/s! I loved your explanations of the defective joints that can occur! I found the swinging of the knee mid air helped me to release most of the pain, but to squat I don't want to go there, tried swimming and found it painful in doing the breaststroke! I play golf now and then and get no pain, yet when I do indoor bowling I can sometimes receive a sharp pain in my right knee as my right foot was positioned to the right as I attempted to throw the bowl I have tried all the so called healing creams, but find the swinging of the right leg/knee very helpful till I twist the foot again! Thank you ever so much for your guidance and will keep you informed how my rehab develops?

Question. I was told I have lateral and medial meniscus tears from a hiking injury. 4 weeks out now. Still having trouble with flexing the knee. Feels tight (not really painful, just hard to flex along with slight swelling at times). I have avoided flexing as to not tear more, but after watching your video it does makes sense to "get things moving". However, after flexing upon extention i have popping on the lateral side without pain. Just popping. I can support with my hand and popping stops. Is this normal or should I avoid movements making the popping sound? Thanks an advance. :)

Injured my meniscus May 2020. Of course I saw the orthopedic surgeon, no surgery indicated but a steroid shot (which hasn't done much), after research I see why that recommendation was made. Slowly....ever so slowly I'm improving. I really believe it will be another several months until I'm 100%. That's why I think videos such as this are important. Good information and allows you over time to set rational expectations for recovery timeline. It can get very discouraging otherwise

@@souravsoumendran9051 Hello and thanks for asking. I believe the knee is 100% recovered, but with qualification. It functions fine and there is no acute pain. I can go about my life dine and I engage in physical activities such as walking, recumbent biking and rowing machine, all with no noticeable stress or discomfort in the knee. The only caveat to this is that occasionally it feels stiff in the joint and I need to stretch and warm up or down for a bit, which we should do anyway. I have stopped most hiking, especially on uneven surfaces. I will be 65 years young in May and now view my knees (as an orthopedic surgeon once told me) like a "ever so gradually diminishing natural resource" which needs to be zealously cared for and appreciated. I do and I am.

This is a very good video! You've hit all the key knowledge points concerning this type of injury! I've had one for many years now, almost had it healed. I've been lazy about committing to a full re-hab regimen again but I keep it at bay by avoiding twisting the knee as you mentioned and I also wear a knee Tensor brace whenever it starts to act up ( only gets inflammation but no pain) and then it calms right down again. Like you stated, avoid twisting the knee, i.e., coming through a doorway or down a flight of stairs and then pivoting on the injured knee to change direction. In my case, I undid my healing after a weeklong motorcycle trip by constantly pivoting on my left leg to get off the motorcycle. Amazing video! Good luck to everyone out there!

Thank you very much Maryke. I injured my knee (meniscus injury) about four years ago and had physio at the time and did lots of exercises. It has never really fully healed, and I do have to be careful that I don’t walk for extended periods on uneven ground, specifically downhill. I went to Symonds Yat yesterday which is a beauty spot near Ross on Wye in the UK, walked down from the rock at the top of the valley down to the river and by the time I got down to the river the knee was twinging… I then obviously had to walk back up again which was not too much of a problem and I had no pain, but after that it became extremely painful any time I had to walk even on a slight slant downwards. I do feel I’m back to square one and hence I looked for a video to help me, this was extremely detailed and I will follow your advice to try and get it back again. I do feel a bit defeatist having had it for so long and being in my sixties now, but I will try what you suggest as it sounds like such good advice 🤷‍♀️ thanks once again, you have good knowledge and obvious passion for the subject, much appreciated 🙏

Thank you for your knowledge and brilliant presentation. So encouraging after a running/fall injury. Swimming is really helping, and even my technique has improved - using no legs freestyle and water cycling to finish. Will follow your rehab advice, gives me hope I can achieve another 10K.

Agreed about swimming. I quickly found out that I couldn't use the machines in the fitness center because they put pressure on my meniscus (after the op) and an old shattered hip. I felt pretty helpless until I thought about the pool and just tried to build up muscle strength without putting my meniscus through torture. I still need to get hyluronic acid shots in my knee (they hurt like hell!), but I think my overall health is better.

Broke my right ankle last summer. Since then I favor my left side. I think my left knee has taken too much load from lifting my computer bag into the car. Sudden intermittent knawing L knee pain walking or torquing movements. I have watched dozens of these. Best, practical and nuanced advice. I am a health educator. This lady an excellent teacher. About 3 years ago, suddenly, I could hardly bend my left knee. Had to take a pain killer just to lift it into the car. Did a lot of inernet searching from cortisone injections, various surgeries and even stem cell therapy. Lots of shocking results from various surgeries and found stem cell therapy incredibly expensive and the stem cells might decide they want to become bone rather then tissue. Began exploring various phsyio exercises and gradually recovered. Recently a bit of pain again which brought me to your video. Your run down is the best I have seen about the nature of meniscus problems. At 83 my morning routine includes knee related physio, a variety of yoga and other stretches and a light workout with 6 kilo dumbells. I finish with going 6 times up and down a 2 storey flight of stairs. Obviously need to be careful not to twist the knee going up and down the stairs but not sure if the general nature of this exercise might be beneficial or perhaps tending to aggravate the knee. Most grateful for a comment. Thanks in anticipation.

This is not really something that I can answer by just knowing what exercises you do - exercises affect different people differently and its about your response to them and all the other stuff you do in a day. If you're concerned about your routine the best would be to discuss it with the physio who prescribed it.

Maryke, I just want to say thank you so much for all your sound advice. I am dealing with a torn Meniscus and as I am close to 70 yrs, the doctors do not want to give me surgery. I have been through an op for the one leg 20 years ago which is still holding up well, and now it is the other leg which is very painful. So I will follow your advice and see where this takes me. I’m following what you advised regarding keeping the Knee active without twisting which is the mistake I was making causing intense pain! I was scared to walk to the shops and back.. but after your advice gonna walk there now with confidence! I’m 63 but act like I’m 23 :) my injury was self inflicted after Learning to roller blade, after a week training my Body said that’s enough and my Knee was swollen up to the max! @@austind1258 No it hasn't. I have flap of cartilage that pops out occasionally and causes the knee to lock, among other issues. I think exercise and stretching routines have helped, but I think I need at least the flap of cartilage trimmed out.

I found this video now. I have gone through an acl reconstruction as well as both medial and lateral meniscus repairs. And just had a locking incident last night while complete bending. Tore my meniscus 7 weeks ago. Only just starting to feel a bit of improvement both pain and motion wise. This video has given me a lot of info and encouragement

Chicken or the egg? Not sure what came first. I walk 4-5 miles a day, 76, 114lbs. and healthy. Inflammation and pain started during weeks of 95 degree heat. MRI shows a tear but I didn’t feel any damage, perhaps, worn out from over activity. Of course the surgeon wants to operate yesterday. Gave me a cortisone shot, unguided by ultrasound. I’m going to PT twice weekly and doing exercises on top of treatments; heat, ice, compression boots, ultrasound, anti inflammatory meds, TENS and foods. I’ve read about other injections that have rendered results. This video is great and along the lines of what I am doing to get myself in the best shape and avoid any surgery. Thank you for this reinforcement and ounce of hope!

Fantastic insight and great information. I’ve had issues for months but not fully understood. I’ve now started exercising focused on the meniscus and strengthening the surrounding areas. So far 2 weeks in it is feeling a lot better! It is not fixed, but miles better! Thank you.

This woman is a diamond! I injured my knee (I think it's a medial collateral ligament strain but possibly the meniscus is involved a little). I've watched a number of KZbin videos on knee injuries trying to find one which actually tells you how to go about rehab. They all discuss the anatomy of the knee and also the tests therapists perform to diagnose what type of injury the patient has. But they omit two HUGELY important things. 1. What the patient can do to help themselves recover. 2. The PSYCHOLOGICAL effect of injury. I'm not afraid of pain, even pain over a long period of time, but daily pain has a depressing effect, not least because there is the idea that "this will be like this for the rest of my life and I will never be able to do the physical things I want to do". That is a HUGE impediment. Watching videos of knee tests and anatomical structures doesn't help any of that ... particularly when the issue of the lack of blood supply to the meniscus comes up. It's then easy to think "I'm doomed". But this therapist provides an injection of hope and positivity, particularly as she explains that even more important than blood supply is the working of the joint in order for the body to remove waste products and facilitate healing. That is such a MARVELLOUS stimulus to the patient not to worry about the pain and instead to focus on remedial exercises. Of course it's important to pay attention to the pain, and use it as a guide to avoid injuring the joint more, but I'm referring to the "ow, it hurts, I'm doomed and won't do anything which makes it hurt' attitude" which I see is NOT the way to go. So God bless this woman. Her patients are very very lucky to have her. There are just two things I think would be a useful addition to her presentation. 1. How long to take pain killers/anti-inflammatories for. I have always been reluctant to take pills for injuries because I'm afraid the dulling of pain might prevent me from monitoring any damage I might be continuing to do to myself because I've dampened down the feedback 'protective' mechanism of pain. After all, it's there for a reason. But I'm willing to concede that the reduction of inflammation in the early stages of injuries is probably important. But for how long, and what? 2. Whether, in the initial stages of injury whether or not it's useful to wear a support aid? Not only (I theorise) might this provide a false sense of improvement, but perhaps the restriction of movement it imposes may in fact be counter-productive, since the joint needs to move in order to heal? So, long comment but I have so much gratitude to this woman I felt the need to invest a bit of time telling her so. Thank you, thank you. 😄👍👍👍👏👏👏🌹🌹

I’m glad you found the video useful! It’s actually the other way around in that Anti-inflammatories aren’t that useful but braces are. Inflammation is an important part of the healing process and if you suppress it too much, you may actually hinder healing to an extent. However, excessive inflammation isn't good either so as with all things it’s important to find a good middle way. My advice would be to only use the medication (if your dr has said it’s ok) if the pain is making your life miserable but if it is just a bit achy and not really a problem then leave it. Braces are really useful, especially during the first 4 weeks. They provide support and allow the the ligament time to heal. You usually don’t need it after 4 weeks and you can also take it off to do your exercises. I tend to advice my patients to only wear them if they know they are going to do an activity where they may be walking on uneven ground or are likely to strain it. There is likely no need to wear it in the house unless it is a severe MCL tear. Hope this helps!
