JD....You're not the first person to say that. I'm from Burlington, Ontario same region as Wayne Gretzky who was playing for Brampton, Ontario. I'm a little over a year older. Yet I played against him a few times in the 1970s. He was generating all sorts of new coverage at the time as a teenage player scoring lots of goals. I had a coach who at the time didn't seem to understand or appreciate that his father had chosen to put him in our bantam division as a peewee aged player for the extra competition and challenge he wasn't getting in his own age group. My coach on his first look at him, in a game where we held him to just two goals scored, came away with this infamous line I'll never forget, "He's good but I don't know what all the fuss is. He's too small and he's never gonna play pro!" How very wrong he was!!

To be arguably the greatest hockey player ever, t's almost unfathomable to think that 3 games into his NHL career, Orr had a knee injury, and consequently had TWELVE surgeries on both knees over his career. And keep in mind when Orr played, they didn't have scopes and the technology to make a "clean" procedure. Each of his 12 operations were about going in and tearing the knee up. It really is mind-blowing to think that as great as Orr was, imagine HOW much greater he could have been without his chronic knee problems. Similarly with Mario and his chronic bad back that plagued him throughout much of his career.

A lot like Mickey Mantle who completely blew out his knee in the 1950 WS [His rookie year] and played the rest of his career without an ACL or MCL, and still put up numbers most could only dream about. If only Bobby and Mick could've had the kinds of knee repair we take for granted now.

In many ways, all three of them were the best. I think better than Gordie Howe mind you Gordie is all time second on the scoring numbers total. Mario was in ways better than Gretzky on a pure scoring basis but he had physical advantages. Those physical advantages (height and size) also made him vulnerable to back injury. Bobby Orr in my mind was the best skater ever and was magic. But to me Gretzky was too small and too skinny to be good. Yet somehow he was just the best. I think that counts in my book to make him the number 1 just because of his sheer numbers given his puny size.

Ron McLean is a treasure, and the best, and I suspect often overlooked, as the best hockey broadcaster and interviewer ever. Ron has such a quick mind and verbal skills, and an an amazing facility to recall anecdotes so accurately. The highlight for me Saturday night, even if I don't watch the game, is to try and catch "Coaches Corner." Ron deals with Don, like a loving son, or an excellent therapist with a client, and of course, Don is a treasure himself.

Orr is very humble, he never thought he was a great talent, just worked harder than anyone. Messier is very humble, he knows he is not the best player at the table, but definitely the toughest with talent. Wayne is humble in that he too knows he is not the best player, more of a product of a time in hockey and a great supporting cast. If Sid was at the table instead of still playing as the best player in hockey for almost 10 straight years, longer than any other player in history, he would be the most humble, he just loves to play hockey but would yield to the hosts pick of the greatest goal by the greatest player ever. Mario is the most wonderful role model, coaches his son in local hockey games, settled down with his childhood schoolmate, maintains his roots living in Canada as well as Pittsburgh, stayed with the same team his entire life, masterful business decisions with his team, a player, an owner He towers above them all.

The few times I saw Gretzky playing in person I watched him like a hawk. The guy would conserve energy away from the direct action. Gretzky would almost park and hide near the mid ice boards watching everything. His defender would tend to lose focus. Then Gretz would explode and arrive at the right place at the right time and be a couple of steps ahead of developments taking place on the ice. He had an incredible sense of flow and where to be. Orr was completely different. Just give him the puck. He had a commanding presence on the ice and the game revolved around him. Orr could keep the puck away from a team on a power play for almost the whole 2 minutes. Never saw a player like that. You simply couldn't get the puck away from him.

Well, I'm an old-timer so I'm biased, but I agree with Bobby Clarke's quote that "Bobby Orr was so good they should have created another league just for him to play in". Best player of all time for me, and sadly very short because of his knee injury. Other great NHL players speak of him with awe and enormous respect. Had he not been injured, we can only speculate on how much greater he would have become. He changed the game, and no other defenceman since has ever equalled his record.
