The owners were dealing with a customer ahead of me in line. He wore a LEAFS cap. This is what the owners (they were in their 60's) had to say. " Your team going to make it pass the 1st round this year?" (They laughed) You know no one really wants to win on your team. (They laughed again) You know their losers right? (They laughed again) I walked up to the counter wearing a leaf jersey. This is what they said to me. NOTHING. In their face, I saw pain. They remembered what Dave Keon did to them, in 1967. You guessed it, I was wearing a Dave Keon jersey. The "C" was on the sweater. Matthews, it is up to you. You can be like our most recent captains. Or you can be something really special. You can be greatness. It is all up to you.

When Brown was stripped of his "C", he supported Kopitar, but was visibly and openly irritated at the decision. There are several reasons to move the C now, one of them being JTs contract is on its last year and they want to sign him but at a much lower AAV obviously and as expected at that age. He can still contribute as a 3rd line center. It would be more awkward to resign the captain to a $2,000,000 AAV while still the wearing the C. This shows 100% class by the organization and by JT himself.

I believe change is good but at what cost? Does this mean Tavares time with the Leafs is over after next year? Can and will Matthew's actually step up and lead the team as Tavares has? Leafs Fan. Auston fan. He's always been the player that is being protected by our other players. Always avoiding conflict to avoid injury, or simply because it's not in his nature. That's fine, but it just doesn't seem right to have that type of personality be your captain, especially in the playoffs when hockey transitions into a physicality first game. I still want to know what happened between Auston, Mitch, and Willy during period 2 of game 3 vs. the Panthers. Auston didn't come out for the third, and missed the next 3 games. Something happened there that may have caused issues in the team. What was Auston's part in that? You can put the C on the personal trainer - it doesn't matter. The problem with this team is that it is a collection individuals, some of whom are very talented like Matthews. However, as long as you have Shanahan in charge, the culture of this team will never change, in that it remains just a collection of individuals, not a cohesive, unified team. We have seen whether it is on the ice play or contract negotiations, that some of these players are very self-absorbed and self-focused. Sacrificing personal ambition and personal benefit has not been a trademark of this team, which is why it will continued to be mired in mediocrity. That said, Tavares is all class and has been a great ambassador for this club. Clearly the initialization of this change was from management. Tavares has shown great humility in relinquishing the captaincy, but ultimately, this is all window dressing. I will believe real change is coming when Shanahan is gone.
