As a Sabres fan I feel the need to point out that you really didn't kill Tim Murray and Sabres enough for how bad this trade was. Neuvirth had been outplayed by Grubauer for the backup spot and Washington had been trying to trade him for a couple months. The Sabres expected Klesla to play for them and even though Klesla had been in the AHL for most of 13-14 he still refused to play for Buffalo and retired right after the trade. The Capitals got the veteran backup goalie they wanted for the playoffs, they got a 3rd rd pick and they got rid of two contracts they were desperate to get rid of. They gave up nothing in this deal.

Great to see trade trees back in the offseason, easily a highlight to rush and watch the moment I find them. One of my favorite trees with a story is how trading Teemu Selanne to the Sharks in 2001 helps the Ducks win the Stanley Cup... with Teemu Selanne. Ducks get Steve Shields, Jeff Friesen, and a 2003 2nd. The pick gets packaged with another 2003 2nd for a 2003 1st, which turns into Corey Perry. Friesen is involved in a big trade, but the important part is Commodore and Damphousse, who get traded for Rob Niedermayer. Maybe not the Niedermayer you hoped for, but finding articles from when they signed Scott is that he wanted to win a cup with his brother. Part of the tree? No. Good story? Oh yes.

As a die hard Caps fan, I'm not even bitter about Shesterkin ending up with the Rangers. Drafting players can be so unpredictable at times. I believe Henrik Lundqvist was a 7ith round pick(so all teams messed up in not drafting him). You need a bit of luck and great scouting to find players past the 4th round that turn out to have good/great NHL careers. This trade tree and how some players ended up being very good, probably has happened to almost every NHL team. It's just hind sight and not much can be done to prevent it other than not making a certain trade to begin with, accidentally.

I think this is the trade tree that Steve tried to ask Allan Walsh about how it came about, which Steve mentioned on the Steve Dangle Podcast. It would've been really cool hearing Allan's take on Halak being traded twice in a week, but alas he was too busy with the Huberdeau deal and his 100 other clients. Also Sabres: always a good sign when someone researching a deal needs to ask someone involved what the hell you were thinking.

Hey Steve! If you're ever looking for an Idea for a trade tree, the deal between Atlanta and Ottawa between Dany Heatley and Marian Hossa is still active on Ottawa's side of things! I did some digging and some other trades involved were the Dion Phaneuf to Ottawa trade as well as his trade to LA, and a trade to Tampa involving Gaborik's contract for Coburn and Paquette (Paquette was used to bring back Dzingle in 2021) An asterisk branch would be Hoffman being shipped with Donaghey (Part of Phaneuf to Ottawa) for Boedker and Bergman, and then Bergman being attached to the Matt Duchene to Colombus

Having a 0.930 sv% and going 5-4-3 is absolutely insane. Obviously 12 games is a way smaller sample size than a season, but that save percentage over a season would win you the Vezina most years Edit: Halak's career arc is crazy. Looking at more stats, he really is one of the better goalies of the 2010s. Not top five, probably not top 10, but I gotta think he's at least top 20 of the decade. Started with the Habs, but got forced out by Price, who definitely is one of the best goalies of the 2010s. Then went to St. Louis but ultimately got traded for Miller near the deadline, but at that time Halak was a 0.919 in 40 games that season. A 0.919 is objectively very good in any era! Yes, before the trade Miller had a 0.923 that season, but it's not as if the goaltending was what was holding the Blues back that season. With the Islanders, he was pretty good, with a 0.913 over 4 seasons, but ultimately wound up sharing the net with Greiss, who was also pretty good over that span. Then to Boston, where he was always going to be second fiddle to Rask, and then by the time he gets to Vancouver and the Rangers he's in his late 30s and on the downswing of his career. TL;DR: Jaroslav Halak should have been a franchise goalie, but he kept on running up against even better prospects, more established starters, and one inexplicable trade by the Blues. Counting goalies who played at least 200 games during the 2010s (i.e. someone who played for most of that decade), he is 13th in wins, 19th in sv%, and 9th in GAA. Clearly not one of the greats, but that's one of the goalies that you should be able to have and say, okay, we've got a good goaltender, that's set, so let's focus on the team in front of him.

The previous draft before Ovechkin was drafted, the Florida Panthers tried to draft Ovechkin as the last pick in the draft. Bettman and the NHL said no, even though Ovechkin's birthday fell into a window that I think technically he could have been drafted that previous year. Basically because Ovechkin was not registered for that previous draft, that he wasn't eligible to be drafted yet.

The loophole they tried to use was that he was like a few days away from being eilgible and they argued that if without lead days he would have been old enough to be drafted
