You can blame NHL stat-keeping for that. Ovi has no incentive to try. He can score 10 goals, and it still wouldn't count for his "career totals" or his chase of Gretzky. Playoffs are just an annoyance he has to deal with when trying to add to his goals tally. Every other sport on the planet counts stats from all competitions for career totals. Every other sport incentivizes trying to win elimination games so you can get more games and more opportunities to add stats. Can you imagine Ronaldo not caring about winning Champions League games because his goals scored in that competition don't count toward his career totals, and he just wants to get them out of the way so he can rest for next year's La Liga season? Well, that's Ovi's reality.

Ovechkin was a joke this series. It looked like he bet millions on Washington to lose or something and wanted to make certain that happened. He literally did nothing in four games and every time he had the puck, he gave it away or took a bad shot that was blocked. He looked so different than his typical self. I’m not insinuating that’s what occurred, but I wouldn’t be surprised at the same time. By legalizing gambling, you’ve incentivized people to make fast money. I just saw a story of an NBA player who was just banned for life from the NBA because of gambling. It’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Man another big L that came from this, was the Washington crowd. The Rangers fans absolutely took over Capital One Arena. Even in this game with the Capitals actually playing better and answering the Rangers goals twice. Ranger fans kept erupting with “Let’s go Rangers” chants and instead of trying to duel chant and over power them with “let’s go caps” the Washington crowd opted to boo. Kinda funny when the team is supposed to fighting for their lives and their home crowd is just booing 90% of the time.

Caps played the one team they had basically no shot against and it showed. Proud of them regardless and I know the pens and redwings it should of been one of you guys cause it at least would of been a series going 6 possibly 7. What this showed this series is that the caps focus to much on Alex breaking Wayne’s record and one man can not win a title without a team, they need to start building for the future. Proud of them again but rangers just the better team simple as that reason why there the president trophy winners. My biggest concern for New York next round is remps I’m worried that kid is going to upset the wrong player on Carolina cause there is a high chance that’s who there playing but we’ll see. Rangers need to tighten up and ensure discipline is top notch for round 2 especially for remps seems like a sweet young man but his ego right now is very high and he still has a lot to prove.

This was the only series I thought would be a sweep, to be fair it probably would have been a sweep if they got the Red Wings too. I like the Rangers, they could go all the way but I got money on the Canes going to the Finals in the East, I expect a full 7 game series between the Canes & Rangers in Round 2. Canes were 7th, 277 total goals with a 3.38 GPG average, & Rangers 8th, 278 total goals with a 3.39 GPG average. Defensively Canes were 4th, 211 goals against 2.57 GAA & Rangers 7th, 226 goals against and 2.76 in GAA. PP, Canes were 2nd with 26.9%, Rangers 3rd at 26.4%. PK, Canes were 1st overall killing 86.4% and the Rangers were 3rd at 84.5%. They're about as evenly matched as teams can get, it'll be like playing against an alternate version of themselves but on paper the Canes have a slight advantage, Rangers should take full advantage of the rest a sweep affords them, having home-ice to start the series won't hurt either.

There’s just too much animosity directed at Ovechkin. The old wolf, after so many tough battles, has successfully steered his youthful, inexperienced pack into the playoffs. It’s an invaluable chance for the young guns to soak up that playoff atmosphere and hone their skills on the big stage. What more could you ask for? What more could you desire? He’s achieved what even Crosby, Malkin, and Kane couldn’t muster this season.
