Mr.Gavaskar, the 1980-81 victory in Melbourne under your captaincy against the run of play was a lot more creditable than the 1977-78 victories. The latter two victories (India still lost the series!) was against a depleted Aussie side in the midst of the Packer tsunami and barring Thommo, had none of the main players. The '80-'81 one on the other hand was the top Aussie team with all the Packer returnees there in the Australian team.

How will they bounce back? Smith, Cummins, Labuschagne are not as good as they used to be. Starc was never good in tests. Lyon never troubled India in pacy conditions. Hazelwood's bowling is dependent on support from other end. Except Head no one can trouble India. When Rohit replaces Paddikal, one more block will be filled.

Everyone talks about Jiaswal and Rahul partnership but no one mentions about the Kohli Washington 88 run partnership which helped India to extend the lead and take the match away from Australia, this partnership also helped Kohli settle down and get his 100. I’m Australian. India should win this series 3-1… at worst. We have an aging/out of form batting line up. We’ve prepared very, very poorly for the series. Our bowlers depend on the pitch/conditions offering them a lot assistance. As you saw, as soon as the pitch got flat our bowlers were very ineffective. The same thing happened the last 2 series here. Our bowlers lost all venom quickly. We *might* win in the day/night in Adelaide, but we’ll struggle in Brisbane & Melbourne. Sydney will be rained out. India have a more talented, dynamic team. They’d have to play incredibly badly to lose.

I would just point out Sani Gavaskar Ji predicted India to lose 0-4 against Australia after NZ catastrophe. While no doubt about his greatness, but I request such greats to have little restraint on their emotion after a bad patch because many people listen to them. I know people will laugh at me but I will go for Jaddu instead of picking Gill at 3!! Let Rohit open the innings and push Rahul to 3, If at all Jurel need to be swapped, I will do it with Jaddu but not Gill. Jadeja is a utility player with multi-dimensional skills in all 3 departments, unlike Gill. Moreover, Rahul is doing a great job in the top order, even if there is an early wicket, Rahul can do the job of an opener as he got the form and confidence from the Perth test.

SA's two games against SL are scheduled in Durban and Gqeberha and both these grounds are as spinner friendly as any sub-continental pitch which will surely suit SL especially when SA has only one spinner and one spin bowling all rounder in squad. Also they have to face Pakistani fast bowlers in pacy conditions when their own pacers are not available(Nortje playing T20 leagues, Ngidi/Burger injured).
