Hey everyone!
The 2017 MVP race was one of the most memorable races in the past 20 years. From beginning to end, this race was contentious and messy, all great qualities for a MVP debate. Both leagues featured memorable races with debates ranging from the role of sabermetrics and the importance of record-breaking seasons. But in the end, only 2 players can win. Do you believe the correct players won the awards?

Thank you for acknowledging the fact that consistency in a season can help a players chance at getting MVP votes (or any other award really) I’ve noticed a few times in a close race where the voters go with the guy who is more consistent even if sometimes he is a little under on the stats of the other guy. Verlander vs Cole for Cy Young in 2019 is a good example, they were neck and neck but Cole had a slower start to the season he didn’t really put up Cy Young stats till May while Verlander was consistent throughout the season. Just seems like a lot of people forget that voters care about consistency, doesn’t matter if we agree or disagree with that because they vote for the awards and not us.

The elephant in the room here isn't so much the Astro scandal its that being a rookie clearly hurt Judge. He was the better player both offensively and defensively in every category outside of batting average. The voters were clearly hesitant to give the award to a rookie and thus minimized the statistical disparity between Judge and Altuve.

Which is idiotic because Ichiro won it in 2001. The Strikeout thing became a narrative during his slump and after the all star break. Again the idiocy of MLB voters that year will forever irk me along with not having Bonds nor Clemens in the HOF
@bmac4
@bmac4 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's a combination of the strikeouts and the position tbh Aaron Judge led the MLB in strikeouts that year, among the least productive plate appearances in baseball, while Altuve's was ~40% of Judge's total. Only one Second Baseman had won MVP in either league in the 41 years between 1976 and 2017, Jeff Kent in 2000. When you have a toss-up between that and an outfielder (who regularly win the award), he probably just wins a tiebreaker there.

It was the strikeouts that made Aaron Judge lose the mvp race. 2017 was around the start of mlbs rising strikeout rate so it was still seen as unforgivable by many fans for a star player to strikeout in 30% of at bats and there were popular headlines at the time about Aaron Judge breaking the record at the time for most strikeouts in a season.

I'll withhold any "helps when you know what pitch is coming" comments on the AL race. Instead, let's talk about Votto. People talk all the time about how the Angels have wasted Trout's career, but Votto is never mentioned in the same manner. With his personality, and his career numbers (which are so under appreciated, second only to Trout in active OPS+ for example), if that dude played for the Dodgers or Yankees he'd be a superstar.

Naturally this video pops up in my feed the day Judge and Goldschmidt finally win their MVPs. As an Astros fan, one thing you forgot to mention: narrative also played a role in Altuve winning. And it’s not the Astros finally winning the World Series. Hurricane Harvey made Houston the easiest team to root for, and I have no doubt it swayed the vote heavily in Altuve’s favor, hence why he got that many first place votes. If you want further proof, look no further than Sandy Alcantara UNANIMOUSLY winning the Cy Young this year. He deserved the award for sure, but I highly doubt it would be unanimous had Florida not been impacted by Hurricane Ian this year.

Before the trash can incident I thought Judge got snubbed, he won it on pure eye test stats and advanced stats clearly stated he had better numbers but “muh strikeouts” argument won out. Now you’re going to claim record matters, question: is that why Othani and Vlad finished 1. And 2. Respectively in MVP voting yet neither made the playoffs? Yeaaa.

Altuve deserved it more than judge. You can call me old fashion, but hitting for average is much better than for power in my opinion. If you have a guy hitting .284 (judge) and a guy hitting .346 (altuve) the guy hitting .346 deserves it cause they add more to there team. Look at tommy edman in 2022 for example. Doesn’t have the rbi, home runs, and power the other guys do witch is why he got robbed of an all star. But look at war, and you will figure out he adds more to his team and is actually statistically the best position player in baseball, just by his insane getting on base all the time plus stolen bases plus defense. People look into power way to much these days. You can’t say a guy who struck out 300 times should be the mvp just for his 50 homer season.

Want to know what makes Stanton's historic 59 HR season even more ridiculous? He was performing half of those games in that cavernous ballpark known as Marlins Park (now known as loanDepot Park) in half of those games. You'd have to imagine many doubles or warning track flyouts in that ballpark, and then factor what could have been. He could have been reaching 2001 Bonds territory.

I believe the rookie aspect made it easy for voters to hand Judge the ROY and gove Altuve the MVP so as to recognize the accomplishments of both players. You see this too with pitchers. Because pitchers have the Cy Young Award, they're not taken seriously as MVP.

Even though they claim he benefited from it the least, nobody takes into account how many at bats completely change because he has guys on base who DID cheat. @@MrRocky814 I think Stanton won because he had a higher war. Vito plays first which is the hardest position to get war at so he had less than Stanton. Their offensive years weren’t that much different but Stanton played in a pitcher friendly ballpark and hit 59 hrs and votto played in a very hitter friendly park and hit 36. Stanton played a harder position while also playing good defense in right. Votto had a great year and had a higher wrc+ but Stanton won because he made more of an impact on defense and had a higher war.

You neglected to include Judge's FanGraph "Clutch" score from that year. It was historically bad. As in one of the worst of all time. While he's gotten marginally better over the years, anyone who watches the Yankees on a regular basis knows he's the LAST player you want to come up in the late innings when the Yankees need a big hit. Altuve, on the other hand, has more big hits just against the Yankees alone.....even just against the Yankees in the PLAYOFFS alone......than Judge has over the course of his entire career. And this is coming from a Yankee fan who hates the Astros. If you disagree, just look up the stats.

Judge was more valuable to his team than Altuve. Aaron would have still went to the postseason without him. Judge's ridiculous September helped propel the Bombers to a WC spot, something they took great advantage of in going on that run . Yankees did the Astros a huge solid by taking out the best team in MLB that year in the Cleveland Indians, a team that had pulled off 22 straight wins in September.
