Can he not tell by the feel of the nitro on the gibson neck
@holderua6 жыл бұрын
The smell of a new Gibson definitely worth it
@daemonelectricity6 жыл бұрын
Nitro vs poly is going to give it away every time. No idea why Epi doesn't offer a premium guitar with nitro finish. I have two nitro finish guitars and a half dozen poly finish guitars at least and it's very easy to tell by touch. If Epi ever started making their "pro" line guitars with nitro, they'd be flying off the shelves. I know it would give me a reason to buy at LEAST one more Les Paul.
@bryand.52406 жыл бұрын
The smell has nothing to do with nitro vs poly, Gibson mixes vanilla extract into the nitro to make the smell more tolerable when spraying all day
@daemonelectricity6 жыл бұрын
I didn't even mention the smell. I don't think my Taylor or Les Paul BFG have a smell, but the finish is thinner and you can feel the wood grain through the finish. You can rub down the neck on an Epi Les Paul with a bog standard Scotch green scouring pad and get rid of most of the "feel" things I don't like about poly necks, but I do think the thickness of the poly finish does sort of choke out some of resonance of the guitar. If you play a Gibson clean with no boost through a clean amp and then an Epi, it's not just the pickup differences which are usually more of a muddy/bright thing. There is just more sound in general. I have a nice Epi with Gibson USA unpotted Burstbucker 2 and 3 in and the Gibson Les Paul BFG I have has a uncovered, potted BB3 in the bridge. That guitar just seems to have more overtones and in general seems to resonate more with less effort on my part. Playing that guitar with fingertips vs picks is definitely nicer than the Epi. There could be other factors, but eve if it's purely aesthetic, I don't know why Epiphone doesn't just offer some test products with nitro. Even if they have to charge a little more for it, I think people would gladly pay for nitro.

Finally ... I feel vindicated. I have an Epiphone Standard Pro, and I have compared it to three Gibson LPs and I think my Epi is better. The Epiphone Standard Pro build quality is as good as the Gibsons but in my opinion the Epiphone Probucker pickups sound better than the equivalent Gibson Burstbucker pickups. Now all I have to do is polish it with some marzipan for that "authentic" Gibson smell. :)
@fishypaw6 жыл бұрын
@@stickmanbrains I almost bought the equivalent Gibson. There was a 2nd hand one selling locally for £1,300 but at the last moment I saw the equivalent 2nd hand Epiphone for £250. I'm really glad that I went for the Epiphone instead. I can play the crap out of my Epi without worrying about it devaluing it and saved over a £1000 ... and it's a better guitar I believe. Cheers. :)
@bryand.52406 жыл бұрын
I've never really liked the sound of burst buckers, they just seem muddy to me, my main amp is a Fryette Pitbull UL that while I love definitely makes it easy to spot sloppy pickups, the harmonics in the epi probuckers aren't great but they are way clearer sounding than the gibbys
@davidburke21326 жыл бұрын
Bryan D. Personally, even though they’re not my favourite pickups I still prefer the burstbuckers to the 490/498 ones which used to be in the Standard (and still make their way into most Customs and some other guitars in the Gibson range such as SGs).
@fishypaw6 жыл бұрын
@@bryand.5240 I've tried them on a few amps, WEM, Orange and Marshall. Maybe not as bright a some pickups but I wouldn't call them muddy, and if I want the to sound bright, I split them.
@fishypaw6 жыл бұрын
+Bryan D I just reread your comment and realised I mixed up the Probuckers and BurstBuckers, again, d'oh. So my comment was a incorrect, I was talking about the Probuckers on my Epi. You may well be right about the Burstbuckers sounding a bit muddy. All I know is the Probuckers sound better to my ears than the Burstbuckers which is a little bit ironic I think in that the Probuckers are based on the Burstbuckers but turned out to be better.

There are many different varieties of “cheap” pickups and indeed of “expensive” pickups and some indeed will “suit” gain settings and differences might remain noticeable under those conditions.
