+Shivani Krishnamurthy Wow, I missed the Oscars, but just watched the movie. Awesome it won best picture. That's saying something about a lot of things. The subject matter, the disposition of society toward finally being okay with bringing the subject of child molestation to public scrutiny. The acting was brilliantly subdued, transparent even, with the exception of Mark Ruffalo's running around, which was there to balance the flow. I mean it's not a newspaper flick without someone chasing a story, or hurrying to catch a deadline, right?

Members of the Vatican City watched Spotlight, a movie about the Catholic Church covering up the horrible abuse carried out by its priests and pretending it wasn't a big issue. Vatican Radio called Spotlight "honest," "compelling" and said it helped the U.S. Catholic Church "to accept fully the sin, to admit it publicly, and to pay all the consequences." This movie had nothing good to say about the Catholic Church, but portrayed the events in a genuine way. Writer Josh singer said that "this story isn’t about exposing the Catholic Church. The motive was to tell the story accurately while showing the power of the newsroom - something that’s largely disappeared today." Spotlight focused on the importance of journalism and did a damn good job. THIS is how you make a movie!

When I first heard this soundtrack it gave me chills. It goes so well with the movie. And the movie, apart from shocking me, shooked and impressed me a lot. Not as smart as The Big Short, nor as dynamic as Mad Max and The Revenant, not as epic as The Bridge of Spies and The Martian, more emotional than Room, but perfectly moody and tragic, Mark Ruffalo was more than terrific. Great, great movie.

"The Children" softly enters during my favorite scene in the movie. Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) tracks down one of the priests that is willing to talk, and he openly confesses to "messing around" with some of his youth members while he was still practicing, but makes the distinction that what he "wasn't getting any gratification" from it. His sister comes to the door and interrupts their conversation, and Sacha is rudely asked to leave before having the door shut in her face. Sacha walks down the stairs and approaches her car when she hears two children playing while riding on their bicycles. "The Children" enters, and with its entrance, the scene becomes incredibly uneasy. It's a very brief moment, but Sacha's realization of the implications of children living so close to a self-proclaimed child molester sets the tone for the injustice the movie seeks to uncover. It's a beautiful, if not haunting, scene, and remains my favorite singular moment in the film for how subtle and controlled it is. It could have been put together and scored to be this incredibly dramatic moment, this realization of unsafety; but instead it creeps up on you, makes itself known without fanfare.

Masterful soundtrack by Howard Shore. In a year of great films ( The Revenant, The Big Short, The Martian, and Bridge of Spies), Spotlight was a film that fell under the radar for me until I saw it on Netflix. I've since seen it several more times and is simply put, a work of art. One of my favorite lines- Garibedean: "This city, these people... they're always trying to make the rest of us feel like we don't belong but they're no better, look at how they treat their children. If it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to abuse one."

The slow-tempo of the soundtrack matched the mood of the film perfectly, with the piano dominating the accompanying musical instruments. Nothing felt hurried or exaggerated; no tangible shift in tone, even right at the end there was no thunderous uplift in the music in order to say "..and they lived happily ever after." Instead the score kept its somber mood, not least because child abuse by RC priests probably still continues to this day. So even though this investigation by Spotlight certainly helped win the battle against the Church, the war still continues....

This movie I’ve seen it twice, and it just makes me so sad so angry that this injustice was allowed to continue for so long, and in other areas it continues to happen I hope one day we can stop this and those responsible can be given the judgement they deserve. Hats off to the "Spotlight Team" for their diligence and staying true to themselves on this incredible exposure of such a horrific cover-up . The story was compelling enough but combined with the soundtrack it blows you away I sat with eagerness waiting for more and more you don't dare leave your seat for the fact you just may miss something explosive. As a catholic I was embarrassed and appalled and then angry . This ultimately ended up being a criminal conspiracy of epic proportion (who Knew) ? Well they did Shame, Shame, Shame on them for hiding "Pedophiles" cloaked in disguise of trusting priests.

2015 Oscar Best Picture Winner: Spotlight

Nice to be the 500th thumbs up for this amazing composer! Just watched Spotlight and kept hearing these beautiful meshing chord transitions and all I could think of was, " now THAT'S a composer!". Then I looked at Howard Shores discography/ body of work. Wow! These are all memorable films and it looks like he nailed the whole genre of elf movie music...what's that? You know, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar...[no elfs I know, but it sounds good]. And that's just the beginning. I will have to listen to more of Mr. Shores work. I need some inspiration for my organ playing on a 1958' CONN CLASSIC-815 all-vacuum tube individual oscillator organ [ That's 72 dual triode vacuum tubes (meaning two identical triode preamp tubes in one tube) for 154 individual notes on the keys and pedals.. and why it sounds so heavenly. Each tube can be tuned just a hair sharp or flat, all 154 at random, for a wonderfully rich ensemble of notes not unlike a real pipe organ. So much warmer than integrated circuits, and digital organs of today. For the best example of this organ listen to ORGAN MOODS - JOHN WINTERS AT THE MIGHTY WURLITZER ORGAN ( but it's really a Conn Classic like what I just described, " mighty Wurlitzer" just sounded fancier), and Paul Mickelson Play The Conn Classic, and George Wright Plays the Conn Electronic Organ. Sorry to babble about old analog organs, but I take it there are many musicians that are listening to Howard Shore's music and we need to save these increasingly rare, very special instruments. They are easy to repair, tubes last forever in organs, but when they fail there are plenty of old stock AND new replacements out there. Actually an older manufactured tube is better than a brand new tube if it tests good.They refined tube making to a precise science that is very difficult to equal with today's smaller factories. Individual transistor oscillator Conn, Wurlitzer, Allen, Rodgers, Gulbransen, and Thomas also sound excellent. A little crisper than a tube organ, but not as rich and warm sounding. Tube organs are preferred for CLASSICAL playing, and transistor organs are preferred for THEATER playing generally, but not necessarily. The electromechanical HAMMOND Tone Wheel 1935'-75' and WURLITZER Electrostatic Reed 1946'- 1961' organs have the most responsive, pure, interactively dynamic, and bold of all organs. They interact with the tube amplifiers in the speaker cabinets not unlike how an electric guitar interacts with a good tube amp. The vintage Jensen speakers and horns are also a very big part of the perfect tone of these two makes of organs. The Hammond B3 is very recognizable, but the Wurlitzer electrostatic reed is not even though it has a very amazing tone, is built better than any organ ever made, and has a richer FLUTE than the all-flute Hammond tone wheel organ. Basically tone wheels produce sine waves, which is indicative of the flute voice on a theater organ, or even a personal flute. The Wurlitzer electrostatic reed on the other hand can produce FLUTE, STRING, and of course REED tones. To see a great thorough 'how it works' article on this model, as well as the Hammond tone wheel organ ( and the great Hammond X66 chromed leg beast!) check out the NORTH SUBURBAN HAMMOND ORGAN SOCIETY ( NSHOS ) site and look under TECHNICAL ARTICLES. Ken Griffin not only played the Hammond tone wheel organ, but he also played the Wurlitzer electrostatic reed organ ( model 4600 ), as well as a CONN CLASSIC or ARTIST vacuum tube model ( but it was usually blended with one of the other electromechanical models. I mention Ken Griffin because he was so innovative, made great recordings, and these records are not only only KZbin, but you come across his records quite often in thrift stores. Believe it or not organ players were well known in the popular music genre from the 30's to the early 60's, when jazz organ seemed to take over. Still Hammond organ was ubiquitous in the studio. You heard Hammond every single day on TV and radio and didn't even realize it. Even today Hammond organ is still very dominant in music. As stand alone instruments though, organ has faded away from the mainstream. People just don't know what they are missing! Ken Griffin 67 MELODY LANE was a short lived TV program in which Ken would play the organ, have guest organists, as well as other well known guitar players, accordion players, etc. There are few of these 67 Melody Lane episodes on KZbin. Ken played a 1954' WURLITZER 4600 ELECTROSTATIC FREE-REED organ exclusively on this show, as well as on the 67 MELODY LANE record Lp. Most people, even organ players, think that Ken only played Hammond organs, but of his many albums almost half have the Wurlitzer 4600 and some CONN tube organ on them. Some albums have a mix of Hammond and Wurlitzer. The album ANNIVERSARY SONGS is mostly, if not all on the Wurlitzer 4600. Ken taught himself to play in one year. He played violin before this, since childhood. He mastered many studio tricks and even learned from and played ( recorded, not sure) with Les Paul. Certainly borrowing Paul's tape echo and over dubbing techniques. I hope to find someone who has info on his exact studio tricks and amps/speaker arrangements. [incidentally I have the spinet version of the 4600, the WURLITZER 4410 from 1956'. I play it on the opening video of my channel, or you can just search it, it's the only live electrostatic reed playing besides Nathan's 4602, and a couple of earlier model KEYED-REED models ( which I have a 46' Keyed Reed Wurlitzer called the "Orgatron" series 31 and 310 vibrato tone cabinet. The early models sound more like pipe organs because the reeds are sent air only as the keys are played, unlike the later free-reed models in which EVERY REED is sent air at once from when the organ is turned on. the reeds aren't used acoustically, but are used only for their harmonic content, electronically. they are sealed in a soundproof box as to not be annoying. The reason or the move to free-reeds was to compete with Hammond's always-on Tone wheels. The result is an instant attack when playing the keys.This aspect of the electronic organs really made them all new musical instruments which were far more conducive to modern music than traditional pipe organs. Basically all organs made before around 1971 are excellent choices because they are easy to fix with common parts and they were made before the inferior integrated circuit methods became standard. Rule of thumb, any brand/ model organ produced before 1968 will have a good tone quality and built well. Whereas the organs made after this are a select few that sound good. Of course the very top model organ from each manufacture would have extra FILTERING on the would-be cheap and plastic sounding integrated circuit 'Master Oscillators' to make the organ richer sounding, but since there is only 1 high pitched oscillator that is simply tuned down for each note on the keyboards and pedals, it leaves the organ with absolutely no ensemble. So they also used phasing tricks and electronic 'chorus' circuits to create the ensemble in the organ. I have a 1975-1978 GULBRANSEN RIALTO II that literally has 6 separate amplifier channels with 6 channels of chorus as well. The organ was designed by CBS ( yes the TV Network, who also bought out FENDER GUITARS in 65', as well as ELECTRO-MUSIC, which is the Leslie Rotary Speaker company. Another thing that gives organs a very endearing, addictive sound are the ROTARY SPEAKERS ( aka Leslie Speaker, WURLITZER SPECTRATONE, and ALLEN GYROPHONIC were the three most well known, but LESLIE was the first and the best. The Leslie was introduced a few years after the very first electric organ- the HAMMOND TONE WHEEL ORGAN. Watch LEGENDARY THEATER ORGANISTS for a segment showing how the Hammond works ( at about 40 minutes in). Besides Hammond tone wheel organs, the Wurlitzer electrostatic reed organs are the only two types of electromechanical tone generator organs ( tone generators are the oscillators, or the heart of the TONE of the organ). Seek out these two types of organs because they were built to last many many lifetimes, and fools are destroying them for their tube amps inside. It's horrible horrible horrible!! Even if you don't play, these make great pieces to look at as furniture. At least you'd be rescuing one of these rare models. Thanks:)

if you like this kind of new age drek, Yanni is a better choice...more robust landscapes and some virtuosity to boot. I agree that this ST captured the mood of the film nicely but no one is going to reference Howard or this score 500 years from now. Mozart he is not.
