Back in it's day, all those wide open areas inside the settlements were packed full of players. The large open area in the fort towards the end used to be so packed that you would struggle to see the floor at times. Given the performance of old hardware and the large amount of players the game may have to render, is probably the reason they did not add much clutter. ArenaNet probably grew more confident with their software, optimization, and the type of hardware the players were using, which allowed them to add a lot more clutter and detail to areas in later expansions. Love the videos btw

It's weird to think how things have changed since then. I honestly didn't even think about how populated it would have been back in the day, I wish I would have talked about that. It definitely does add to the ghost town vibes.

I remember my computer chugging whenever I entered the pre/post ascalon, lions ascent and droknars forge. There were so many players. Now, obviously it's pretty small population wise but it's still very beautiful to see.

I wish you had contrasted pre and post searing Ascalon. That was the gut punch back in the day, going from that scerene and idyllic land of green and auburn to nothing but ash and tar. Pre-sear was never meant to be stayed in for long, but still managed to create such a sense of loss and nostalgia that a community built up around staying there.

Nostalgia is strong with this one, damn. What a great game it was, so many great memories about playing after school. Still can't believe how much content they pumped out within 2 years (3 expansions!!!). Also keep in mind that Ascalon (the hub area) back in 2005 was absolutely flooded with players, didn't feel empty at all :)

The statue in the catacombs is Grenth, god of death and ice, patron of necromancers. The poison gauntlet leading up to it is to teach monk players to heal, they have to escort an NPC though it, leading to a ritual in that alcove. I'm curious that you didn't include the candle ritual room from the catacombs. The quest its involved with is somewhat obscure and without context I assumed it would count as a weird and interesting spot. Perchance you didn't come across it. Anyways, my favourite spots in pre-searing are the forest near Fort Ranik and the vinyards near Duke Baradin's estate. Very comfy.

there are a lot of parallels between pre-searing ascalon and queensdale in gw2 the wyrm infested farm the angry bull in a large puddle a large looming continuous structure in the background (gw:p it was the wall, in gw2 it's the dam) also another note, you probably already noticed that the tower is completely missing after the searing, that's because those chains were broken and now the tower is in the northeastern corner of Magunna

I played GuildWars and all the expensions around 2008 and had a character that would stay in this area :) it was so peaceful. And towns where full of players, more s during seasonal events with more dancing, fireworks and decorations. Nice video :)

There is something magical about the starting areas indeed. Lovely video! I don't know if you ever decide to return to Presearing to explore more, but there's a few fantastic locations that I think you'd enjoy - the fishing village in Wizard's Folly, the painting in the northwest of Green Hills County. Also, I haven't researched it thoroughly yet but apparently Presearing was added as a last minute addition following the initial internal testing, where the first missions began already after the Searing, and the testers just didn't care at all about the stakes, so the devs decided to add a beautiful tutorial area to show them what was lost. The graphics of the zone are based on the zone after the Searing, just instead of being destroyed & dusty they are still full of life. Once again, amazing vid :)

I also like comparsion of GW1 and GW2. GW1 still has a lot of charm and I return there from time to time. Suprised they didn't pull the plug. But someone from Anet said its running as back application on GW2 server and are not planning to shut it down. Which is very cool.

Just enjoying the night time listening to the in game music, or walking around the city. But regarding Postal 2, I found the weird sounds, the funny civilians, the silence, the chirping birds, the malfunctioning lights... Its an interesting place hahaha

🤔 When a Mmo launch full of people in the starting area so magical and motivates to stay the whole day playing. Then you came back years after a long hiatus and the starting areas are like this empty and nostalgic. Mmo are really something special. Oh no I am not crying. I caught something in my eyes.

I'd love if you visited Darken City in Flyff. One of the most beautiful and mystical places I've ever visited in an MMO. When you first arrived by flying across an ocean and a dangerous new island continent after finally earning your broomstick/hoverboard, the city literally opens up beneath you, obscured underneath the landscape surrounding it. Landing and looking back up from where you came, the stars peak from behind the rocky outcroppings above the city. Back at its peak, the players, their messages and trade offers, lit up the darkness of the partially underground city at night. Last time I visited it, there were only a few players, and it felt ghostly, lit only by the light of a few lamps here and there. The music is absolutely haunting, never heard anything else like it.

In the combat zones of GW you only share the instance with party members. In Pre the max party size is 2 so these zones can only be experienced by 2 players at once

Ah, Guild Wars... My first MMO. And the longest chain of how a game came into my periphery. A cousin of mine got told about this game by an online friend who told her brother about it who shared it with my sister who I saw play this game. I made a character on her account to try it out, loved it, and got it for myself (well as much as a middle schooler could get it for himself i.e. asking my parents to buy it). Necromancer was my first class. I wasn't as familiar with Ascalon at that time. I did make a character to level to 20 in Pre-Searing Ascalon a couple years ago but... My bread and butter campaign was Factions. I loved the Oriental aesthetic. I would love to see a follow up vid on Shing Jea Island. The monastery, the villages, the minister's estate, the lagoon... Such beautiful countryside.

In Aion (another MMO), the capital city and hub of one the faction is this huge white floating city. While exploring it when I was young, I noticed that far far below, on the ground, there were ruins of some sort. Since we have wings allowing us to glide for a certain amount of time, I managed to slowly but surely get down. My memories is a bit hazy, so i don't remember how much time it took, I'm fairly certain we are way up in the air at the start. But the reward was worth it : Being in this small ruins, with absolutely nothing in it, out of bounds, with the Capital city floating above, no players around whastoever, no way to get back up. At the time, I though : ''Oh, this could be the ruins of the settlement in the past, way before they build Sanctum'', and I still think this makes sense, but I still that's a weird piece of environment to this day. Probably y favorite unusual place I found in a video game. I haven't played a lot of MMO, and it was when I was a early-teen to teen, but I have a lot of memories about their worlds and how much you can explore and find odd places or go OOB. Another strong memory : I spent 14 horus in the span of 2 days climbing a moutain in Tera. What a dumbass I was (am).

I played this game briefly. It was cool because it was one of the main MMOs that was no subscription. I didn't really enjoy the mechanics, especially PVP which seemed like the main thing. I remember the healers being super overpowered. I think this game had one of my favorite towns though -- I don't remember it entirely, but I think you could attack enemies that were in the background so you kind of got a sense of it being a chaotic combat zone camp. By the way some of this architecture reminded me of Kenshi. It's a pretty cool indie game I bet you'd like exploring. The game is pretty hardcore in the learning curve though but you can feel the passion of the devs and community which is pretty neat
