The Social Security surviving spouse benefit seems easy enough to understand. But hidden in the details are small nuances that can cost you - or your loved ones - thousands of dollars in missed benefits. But If you invest the time to make sure you know the rules, you can be confident that you understand the benefits available to a surviving spouse.
Here are some shortcuts to specific areas of the video:
3:25 What spouses are eligible for survivors benefits? Current vs.former spouses. Remarriage rules. Exceptions to the length of marriage rules.
7:50 How to calculate survivors benefits
12:20 How the Widow's Limit (RIB-LIM) works
15:30 How to use filing strategies to boost benefits

There are a lot of strategies to make tongue-wetting profit that the average joes don't know. . Personally, the financial-market for me seems the only way forward with my long time horizon (accrued roughly $457k in gains since Mid 2021 ) but if you don’t have that fortune of time it’s a tough market out there almost nowhere feels safe!

Devin, thanks for always giving us helpful information to navigate Social Security and get our best benefits. I just got off the phone, after waiting 2 hours on hold I might add, to make an appointment to apply for widow's benefits on my husband's earnings. The representative tried to convince me that I will have to choose between my earnings or my husband's because I am 66. I told her 3 times- no, I'm not applying for spousal benefits or my own. I want widow's benefits, Form SSA-10. She finally put me on hold and went and asked somebody. She said I am right. After age 66, it doesn't matter how much I earn. I can file for widow's benefits. And then at age 70, I will file for my own. It pays to educate yourself by listening to people like you!

You must ensure you request a RESTRICTION to leave out either your survivor or your record benefit before adjudication of the benefit. If not , all eligible benefits related to your SS number will be included and you will forgo your ability to file for a survivor and then later file for your own . Extremely important!

Devin, the typical case is that the wife takes her own benefit at age 62 and her husband takes his at FRA. Her own benefit is more than a spousal benefit. Now years later they are both past FRA and If he then passes away first, my understanding is she will receive his full benefit as long as it is greater than her own benefit. Is this correct?

A married couple are both receiving social security retirement benefits and one of them dies. Is the survivor entitled to receive any of the benefits the deceased spouse received? If social security did not exist, they could have put the money away for themselves, but the government took it from them. If they had not been forced to give it to social security, the couple would have it available to them, and if one dies, the survivor would have it all.

Devon, in you linked article you mentioned bank account protection. I have a friend over 65 living entirely on her SSDI payment. She had been previously advised to transfer some of this income into other (same bank) accounts she and her husband had at the time of his death. So she does this in small amounts monthly. Are these other accounts protected too since all the deposit into the main account appears to be protected? Or does this practice need to stop? Thanks.

This is an older video but…here is one on survivor benefits. I was married for ten years so it’s not me. I am watching a few people who are 2nd marriages. Like long term, maybe even 20 years. They know the 1st is dying. They file for divorce on #2 so they can qualify for SS based on #1 survivor benefit rate. I don’t ask if f their plan worked so will ask you. Does it work? Oh and 2 told me they plan to remarry #2 after they go thru the process.

I'm understanding the reduced benefit set at 82.5% of FRA when your late spouse began benefits at 62 - and the surviving spouse claim is at it's maximum at roughly 62.5, depending on birth year, when your reduction is 17.5%. I'm understanding the 100% of FRA when those benefits began at or after FRA. This is when the surviving spouse claims at their FRA. What about the missing middle? My late spouse claimed about 9 months prior to FRA. Roughly 6% reduction. Am I right in presuming that when my reduction is that 6%, my survivor's benefit is at it's max? Somewhere between 62.5 ish and FRA, matching the actual reduction that the late spouse received?

what about if your ex was disabled but paid in maximum life premiums before becoming disabled? I am 53, disabled since I was 21 but because I didn't file until after I was 22... missed the disabled child benefit being based on my parents. I got married after I became disabled but did not file until after I was married. I became disabled at 21 in 1989. I got married in1991. I filed for disability in 1993. I was in a wreck and did not receive my mmi report until 1995, at which time I was approved for SSD based on what I had paid in... because if my age at the time I filed, but they always told me I wouldn't get it til my mmi report was complete. SO UNFAIR. I left my husband years ago but we never divorced. We had been together and apart throughout our marriage. The last time we split was 2008... so 17 years on and off but still married for 30 years. He worked overtime his whole life (made a lot of $$$) but became blind in his 50's and has now passed away from diabetes. I currently get 700/m SSD and 100/SSI. How does it work that he became disabled before any retirement age but payed in well over the required 10 years and over the max cap; when I, as well, have been disabled basically my whole adult life. I did pay in 6 of the 10 years myself as I went to work at age 15 and I have paid in some since... trying to work over and over again. I have head injury. I also have a genius IQ. I wake up retartded and go to bed Einstein, so I tried working at night BUT, then there is the barometric pressure changes from weather that instantly retards my brain again.

Great video!! Question..my wife was on disability when she passed in 2018. I am 61 and still working. Plan to retire at 62 at which time I will apply for her survivor benefits. I will draw her survivor's benefit until I reach 70. Will I get 71.5 % of her SS before she started receiving disability or 71.5% of her disability amount which is considerably higher?

If I collect a defined benefit from State of AK Teachers retirement am I allowed to draw on my ex spouse of 27 yrs? I have been told, because my Alaska retirement benefit exceeds the portion I would be eligible for off of him, I CAN NOT draw any SS from him. He paid into SS all of his career, I only paid into SS a minimal amount of time. Please help clarify!
