Welding on a Wastegate + Fabricating a Custom Turbo Downpipe | LS Swap S10 Update

Күн бұрын

This time on SPPTV Rob continues work on his Chevrolet S10 5.3 LS V8 Swap project! The hotside is finished by mounting the wastegate, and a custom turbo downpipe is fabricated from scratch!
A wastegate is the part of the turbo system that releases pressure from the hotside before the turbine of the turbo. It controls boost levels like this by limiting the amount of pressure escaping before the turbocharger with a number of springs and a valve. A Blow of valve works the same for the cold side of the turbo setup.
S10's are definitely tight to work on. Building a turbo exhaust down pipe to fit is not so simple. Rob makes it look easy as always and ends up building a nice piece to direct exhaust under the truck!
This Project will continue to be worked on, so subscribe now and tune in for constant updates!
Thanks for watching!

It looks fine the way it is, and from what I have seen, it should work perfectly well just as it is! Furthermore, it is your project, and if you feel comfortable with it working correctly as it is, I would leave it alone, if it is my project!

Hey Rob. Nice work, but mering both sides at the turbo fange does make a considerable difference. Also your waste pipe should be just below the turbo flange welded in so that the flow of exhaust can easily escape. However, for a street car just looking to burn a little or so, your set up will probably work just fine. Anyhow. I enjoy watching ya'lls videos! 👍

You’ll need defrost for driving on the street even in the rain. I vote make the heat work. On the intersection of the Hot pipe, I’m not sure how it will work “T” into each other? It could be a flow restriction?

I agree with Clayton, but try it out and see what happens. If you do change it I'd run both onto a merge then put the waste gate at the merge, because currently you only have half the exhaust waste gated,

as your bud said. "y" the pipe rather than "T" it and itll help spool, will help prevent excessive exhaust manifold pressure spikes that lead to uneven bank running and sometimes knock. Also, put your wastegate as close to the turbo inlet flange as possible, after the 2-1 merge. itll help prevent boost creep, and give proper boost control

I hear everyone say oh the wastegate has to go after the murge but in keeping tradition of hot rodding and if it works it works does it really no matter on wastegate placement? Also the exhaust will travel to the point if least resistance witch would be the turbo

in my thought on the crossover on the hot side in theory yes if it we're angled more towards the turbo it would have a faster more effect on air flow, think of it as a wall air hits it dead on it would stop it until its forced out some other direction. no matter what their will be airflow

Brave to ask KZbin opinions, the speed at which you work, guessing its already done. I'd go up from where you have the wastegate cut in so that the bottom of the tube would be where the top currently is now or higher which might also gain a fraction for that water pump hose (not sure how it is molded).

to make it easier if you do decide to change it, you could maybe cut a triangle piece of tube and just cut out the now existing 90 degree angle. and weld in your triangle piece to make it a 45 degree on the turbo side of the driver exhaust tube. If that makes sense.

I was less concerned with flow and more worrying about restriction when i done mine...what i mean is you have both banks forced into one 2.5" pipe before the turbo if that makes sense...so 4cylinders run thru one 2.5" pipe and the other 4 run thru one 2.5" pipe then all of a sudden 8cylinder into one 2.5" pipe...kind of like constipation?

With the way the exhaust pulses back and forth as it moves through the system it may or may not be better. Hell it could quite possibly be worse going with Clayton’s recommendation. Pretty sure the factory manifolds and altering the length of the Y-pipe/crossover threw the efficiency part out the window. Who knows just my 22 cents. Keep the change

Change it! Don't cut it apart, just use the inside of a 90° bend to help upsweep it to the turbo. And maybe use the hole saw or whatever ya got to make a hole. I noticed that too in the last video, i agree with Clayton. Or just cut it up and use whatever bend to merge drivers hot side into flange

It would be better with a Y merge but it will work the way you have it, just wont build boost as fast or as well, the long side will be killing the velocity of the air from the short side. I think I would be more worried about not having a flex connection between the 2 hotsides, once they heat up they grow and move quite a bit, most likely will crack a right next to a welded connection.

IMO your wastegate position is going to be more problematic than the bank 1 merge on the hot side. The way the wastegate is now it's really only going to dump bank 1 side and the bank 2 side is going to wanna go to the turbo.
@El_Chompo
@El_Chompo 6 жыл бұрын
The two headers merge before the turbo. It will be fine that way. Pressure follows the path of least resistance. An open hole through the wastegate will be way easier for it to flow to than spinning up a compressor wheel that is resisting it.

With turbo applications ideal gas flow matters less and less. It all just gets forced where it needs to go. Sloppy switched on those super nice ported billet heads from the stockers and only picked up 40 hp from 600 which is a 6% power increase for a significantly better flowing head. Turbos just don't care they just cram the air in. On the hot side the pressure will just force it to go the right way too. I think if you changed that bend maybe you would get 20hp difference maximum. Maybe ever so slightly faster spool time. I'm thinking realistically 5 to 10hp difference if you added that bend and a tiny fraction of a second turbo spool decrease. If it's easy to unbolt and work on that pipe setup off the car though then I would probably change it if it didn't take that much time personally just because I'm an idealist and I like to see 'problems' get fixed just to satisfy me more than to make more power or efficiency.

I'm no expert on this at all so I could be wrong but I would change where they connect. I saw that problem when seen it in the other video. I'd be really worried about having a lot of backpressure on the passenger side manifold the way you have it routed now. Having that pressure coming from two different angles facing each other just looks like it could be a problem. Plus you'll get better flow into the turbo merging it in closer to flange. I think it'll look a whole lot better too. It looks rushed the way it is now. I also would've put the waste gate closer to where they merge together. Doesn't seem right to have it working of the drivers side only. But like I said to begin with I'm not a expert so I could be wrong. Keep up the work guys! Your one of my favorite channels! Can't wait to see the shithorse powerplant come together!
