Grade 3 cfl tear. Use of PEMF therapy to support blood supply for 3 weeks every day. Athlete had excellent proprioception and foot strength prior. What timetable can the athlete follow to being loading the ankle again? It's been 4 weeks of no load and relatively stringent immobilization with routine pemf therapy.

@DrTomBiernacki

It's unfortunate to say, but you really should get evaluated in person, these are very complicated injuries with many variables, go see a doctor! One thing to consider about chronic injuries, is muscle and ligament contractures, we find the majority of people never get their flexibility all the way back and this is what causes future issues for them. Think about ankle joint equinus!

This did happen to me 4 days ago. (Complete tear) I went straight to the orthopaedic doctors office. It did look like on the last picture but luckily no broken bones. The doctor was quite surprised that I had no other Injuries like broken or dislocated bones. It did happen while doing fitness workout (cardio) I ran on the spot and suddenly heard a loud pop / crack followed by a really sharp pain. Have to go to the doctor again in like 10 days. I still need help outside and I can't really put much weight on my foot. It still hurts (like a sharp pain) a few times a day, especially after walking for like 10 minutes. Hi, just wondered if I could get an expert opinion. I broke my Fibula, spiral fracture 1yr and 5 months ago. Wrecked just about every ligament at the same time. Opted against surgery and the bone healed naturally (cast + lay in bed for 3 months), then 6 months physio, but all this time later my ATFL on the outside, and rear deltoid on the inside still give me lots of grief, very stiff in the mornings, only 70% bend in that ankle, and I still get a darkish shadow on the inside of my ankle that comes up and fades away depending on how active I am. Do you think I have permanently torn and should have had Lig surgery? Or is this extremely long recovery time common when a severe break happens? Should I insist on an ultrasound/MRI scan? Any experience/advice greatly appreciated😊

Judging based on coloration in the pictures, I should be in stage 2 with a partial torn ligament. However, after I called 911 and have been brought to the E.R. for scanning, they just let me sit there for 4 hours without keeping it cool or letting me elevate my ankle. They said the bone’s fine but I should take about 6 weeks to heal. It’s only been 4 days now, but it’s so frustrating to just sit and lay around without being able to do anything.

I don’t think this is 100% acurate tho as well. Me personally , I had alittle swelling for about a week and felt better, then it started swelling up like 8 months later *now* I go to the podiatrist, come to find out one of my ligaments is completely blown. Partially that’s my own fault for not getting it looked at sooner but I think sometimes it can just be circumstantial In other words take it into consideration but definitely still go see a doctor. Don’t end up like me with a blown ankle and needing surgery 8 months later bc I didn’t take proper care 🤣

I had symptoms of a stage three. Swelling as big as a baseball. Purple bruising. Intense pain, very limited mobility. That was 16 days ago. Now the swelling is very minimal. Only near the sight of the sprain. Pain is minimal but still there. It's been reduced to a dull ache. I can walk normally. But therapy exercises tend to be more painful. I haven't seen a doctor. But if it will heal on its own I'd rather not go, because I can't afford to go. If I had a full tear, would I be healing like I am now? Would I even be able to walk? I keep seeing videos and reading information that states that the symptoms I have go with a stage 3. Yet it seems like I'm healing just fine.

I’m hoping he won’t need surgery seeing as he’s in army bootcamp. He turned around and his ankle dislocated I guess you could say because they had to sedate him and pop the ankle back into place or something like that, but nothing is broken. So here’s to hoping for the best!

At first I would say it was more adrenaline than anything so I really didn’t know what had happened because I never sprained my ankle before, but I did feel a sharp stinging pain and my foot was definitely bruised and was hard to put pressure on. I definitely felt the ligament tear no doubt. And years later I would still say that the ligaments are somewhat weak. You might feel aches or discomfort in the same area but everyone is different. What helped me was giving that area a deep massage and work on foot strengthening exercises. And I haven’t felt pain since.

I tore a ligament in my right ankle on October 19,2017. I had a bad fall on that day. It was just outside of my apartment. I tried to get up a couple times. It felt liked that I broken my right ankle. I called 911 first then my mother. She drove me to the ER at the hospital. I gotten X-rays of that ankle. It did swelled up and had a lot of bruises around the foot,ankle, and heel. I had gotten a boot to wear on that foot and used a walker,too for 2 weeks. I had to used the walker in for walking. It was hard to drive when my ankle was badly sprained in my vehicle. I did used the cruise control on my vehicle. Even used brake pedal to brake. I had my mother at that time,too. I didn’t cried when I sprained that ankle badly. I had my neighbor that saw me falling. He was the only person that saw what happened. I would have being pissed if someone laughed at my fall. I know what a broken ankle felt like,too. I did broke my left ankle in a bad car accident in early March 2012. My mother had helped me with my sprained ankle and I did stayed with her on those 2 weeks. I just was thinking on my first time walking after having my broken ankle excepting it was on the other ankle. My mother did all of the driving for me those 2 weeks.

Was given some pain and inflammatory drugs and sent home with instructions of R.I.C.E. Over the past two days I have gained slight strength to walk but the pain is still quite severe. But my point of concern is my foot seems to have some Edema and ecchymosis, yesterday I could feel some sort of fluid moving in my foot and that’s has scared me. I live in China and health care is such a challenge for a foreigner. Any tips?

Not specific to you, but generally if patients have a lot of swelling and pain it's a great idea to protect it initially. Either a walking boot or brace for up to a week, then a lace up brace in a shoe for numerous weeks after that. If it hurts while walking you are causing more damage, if there is no pain then they are probably not causing any more damage. Ankle injuries are tough!

@@MANNYTIMEE12 Well it healed but unfortunately not correctly. The ligaments healed but too loosely so I had instability I had to undergo surgery in June to have it fixed. It was a pain but I was walking within about 6 weeks of surgery. With a boot on mind you but still I gave up the boot at the end of last month it has been ok still quite a bit of swelling when I do too much, but that's to be expected up to 6 months after surgery. I'm responding to this in case someone else is trying to find this information later on. The answer is most likely no. You can have a completely torn ligament and it can heal on it's own, but it will take a long time (most likely a full year, sometimes even longer). If it is hurting constantly and rest + ice doesn't help at all, surgery might be an option.

@nialldean9791
@nialldean9791 Жыл бұрын
Exact same story here. Started bad, then i could walk normally, then pain came back 6 days later. And pain came back hard. Also my toes and foot are becoming less swollen, but my lateral mallelous (the circular bone that sticks out on the outside of your lower calf) swelled a lot more. I assume it's because it took our body 5/6 days to actually attack the injury and the pain and swelling we experience now is because of the inflammation rather than the injury. Sincerely; a final year medical student.

Not specific to you, but in a situation like that it would definitely improve from the acute pain and tenderness, but it's hard to say how well the ligaments would attach back to themselves. It also depends on the physical exam(if the ankle is dislocating/loose) vs what are the needs. For example a young active person may be better off considering repair vs an older patient will do better with bracing in some cases. There are many factors at play!

Some studies recommend treatment for cartilage damage, but realistically as long as you correct the alignment and it improves you don't need to do much. I had a full deltoid ligament tear as well as breaking the little bone (fibula). I got a plate and 8 screws for the little bone but my ortho says the ligament usually heals on its own. I'm a bit concerned because the bone (tibia) moved pretty far from it's original position. After surgery however, it did go back in place but i'm seeing online that fully torn ligaments of all kinds don't heal on their own and need surgical intervention.

Update: Doctor has put a cast for 4 weeks and then swelling and pain have significantly reduced and he removed it on 23rd of August. Once cast was removed, It got a little swollen and I started doing hydrotherapy and exercises to restore my motion ( I still didn’t walk on it). I did that until 27th of August. Then, I started electrical stimulation physical therapy and that really helped me a lot in reducing swelling. I started on 28th of August and I saw a result from session 1. I started walking with crutches in the same day putting a little weight and slightly increasing the weight. On 1st of September, I started full weight bearing. It was painful. The first steps are really painful but it is normal since I haven’t walked for more than 4 weeks. Today, (2nd of September), I can walk alone, full weight bearing without crutches. At the beginning it hurts but once i start walking, pain diminishes. I still don’t feel comfortable while walking and I am a little bit limbing on the other leg, but I am happy with the result and I will keep improving.

Having Hemophilia for 50+ years now, I am completely used to seeing injuries of the 4:28 time stamp magnitude. I have injured (internal bleeding episodes) every joint on my body at least 10 times. Some joints have been swollen over 300+ times! Anyway, I have a daily pain now in my left ankle that is truly excruciating. The pain begins at the left side of my left foot, where the ankle is. Now you go to the right edge of that ankle and you go about 20% into the ankle, going left. That's the left-most edge of the pain area. From there, we go to the right, up over the foot, where the foot bends, all the way to the other side of the foot -the right side of the foot. The pain area ends right before we get to left-most edge of the right side of the ankle of the left foot. Hope its.not confusing. Does anyone know what this could be? Maybe the Inferior Extensor Retinaculum?

Hey I don’t have a proper answer but hopefully some helpful advice, I too am a haemophiliac (severe) myself in my 30s and I have had a lot of issues with my ankles for the last 15 years, I’ve found that the recovery looks a lot different from the norm because of all the repetitive bleeding into the joint. My advice for what’s helped me is this, resistance bands every 2nd day (unless you have a bleed) sets of 10-20 on light in each direction, daily walks as far as you can without causing intense bleeds, if your injured always rest don’t push through the pain, and massaging the joint gently focusing on areas where it feels abnormal/scarred internally to increase blood flow to heal. In saying all that it could also be a combination of osteo arthritis as well as scarred ligaments due to the repetitive bleeding into the joints. Wishing you all the best and hope your getting the treatment you need for your factor deficiency, I’m currently on a new treatment called emicizumab which has helped reduce bleeds significantly, could possibly bring this up with your haematologist if you have access to one.

@@scottcoulter1139 Hey Scott, I'm using Hemlibra and have been for about 3 years and have had no bleeds whatsoever. It's a real game changer. Someone I know just changed to that as well and they are loving it! Growing up in the 70s and 80s with only Factor 8, no pain medication was truly tough times. I'm very happy for the kids today who are say, 20 and under. With todays infusion medications and doing it themselves, they have a real chance of saving their joints before the massive damage sets in. They can infuse themselves now -- -no going to the ER and waiting for 3+ hours to get infused was another horrible aspect of back then. There's another medication that is late --was supposed to be out early this year or late last year. I can't remember if its an infusion or a pill, but it's supposed to be only once every month or so. I haven't heard anything infact about an update. So, is your med an infusion? Every day, every week?

Happened to me in April, heard something pop really loud, visited the ER, they suggested I visit a specialist, (one week for appointment), foot doctor ordered therapy, after 5 weeks of therapy, still swollen, therapist says something’s wrong, meanwhile my ankle feels like it’s going to roll easily, all this time I’m wearing tall boots for support, made appointment with doctor for first available, (2 weeks), doctor ordered an MRI, fought insurance for 5 weeks to get the MRI approved, set the appointment for the MRI review for first available (3 weeks) after the imaging took place, doctor says, the ligament is completely snapped, you need surgery, first available is 6 weeks from today, haven’t gotten surgery done yet, just waiting for that day to come.

We would love to be able to give you a more specific answer, but unfortunately we cannot do so. These are very complex medical problems that do require specific evaluation in both physical and imaging modalities. Please see a podiatrist near you for further evaluation. We would be doing you a disservice with general advice for such an important issue. Your podiatrist or primary care doctor can likely help much more than we can in this instance. Great video but im worried. So I fractured my 5th metarsal bone and thats all the doctor was focused on. Had a cast for 5 weeks and now doctor said to walk on it BUT I still have pain. When my injury first happened I had bruising under my ankle just like the last photo showed so im thinking I tore some ligaments but doctor didn't even check that. Im suppose to be walking normal with no pain but thats not happening. I feel a quick sharp pain under my ankle area which is Not the broken bone. 🤔 Ugh 😥

I sprained my ankle at gymnastics (we did tramp). We went to check that there was no fracture and that the ligament had not been torn off. My foot was as swollen as the picture you showed, but they said it was fine. But now, four weekend later, it’s still quite swollen (but not enough for you to notice it by just glancing at my foot) and I can barely jog. Do you think that there could be anything else that has happened to my ankle, or is it just a really bad sprain?

Hi, I have sprained my ankle 2 days ago with some cracking sound heard. Elevated it immediately and the swell wasn't that bad and no bruising. Went to have x-ray taken, there might be a lucent line on my fibula. Surprisingly, I can actually put weight on my ankle and it doesn't hurt a lot. Any possibility that I have torn my ligament? And what was that sound after rolling my ankle?

Cracks can be bone breaking, ligaments tearing or just a joint moving like cracking your knuckles. In the foot it could be the subtalar joint clicking most commonly.

Michigan Foot Doctors okay I have SO much pain still on the in back part next to my ankle. I ship off for the marines in 13 days and I’m trying every remedy to make it not hurt when I go on runs. Because I limp EVERYTIME. I can put all weight on both ankles which is good. I can roll it left, right, move it down. But I CANNOT and I can’t stress this enough, point my toes towards me as far as my other ankle. I have a great orthopedic doctor but think he may have missed something.

I had bad sprained ankle just a little bit over 5 years ago. It was my right ankle. I even torn a ligament in that ankle. I thought it was broken at first when I tried to get up a couple times. It was just outside of my apartment. I called 911 first and then my mother. My ankle was so swollen, black and blue bruising around the foot and ankle.

Mine sprain is weird.. The swelling got worse at the 24-36 hour mark and my foot is swollen down to my toes, however there is no significant discoloring. Slight blue hue on the bottom of the side that didn't even get hurt. It's becoming inflexible now with so much swelling and I can bear weight on the ball of my foot but it hurts to get my foot into a 90 degree position to be able to stand so I avoid it. It also hurts a fair bit unless it's raised above my heart.
