~£11k for 5 years on repairs/maintenance wouldn't be too bad for that sort of car, I imagine there are many potential issues that are going to end up costing you ~£1k/year before servicing etc. And you've been doing everything as it comes due, which is more than most people.

You have to always remember that generally the biggest cost of car ownership is depreciation. Had you bought this car new you would have probably lost at least £20k in the first year, if not more, and you would still have all the other running costs. Buying an older car means you have limited depreciation whilst still having the pleasure of a fantastic car! You simply have to accept that they’re never going to be cheap cars to run but the pleasure is well worth the cost 👍

I bought a CLK 55 AMG this year, the car was in very good condition, had only 2 owners and had a low mileage of 61000 miles. However, I spent almost 3800 pounds on it. Full service (oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filters), spark plugs and ignition wires replacement, gearbox oil change. The xenon lights turned out to be faulty (bad ballast units ). Signs of corrosion started appearing on the wheel arches, so I decided to address that as well. I probably didn't have to do many of these things, but since I take care of my cars, I prefer to be cautious.

True story. When you actually get psychical cash out, you can see your hard earned in front of you, I couldn't contemplate paying 60k for something that loses money and you can only drive as fast as anyone else on our pot holed, camera laden roads. Back to the Fiesta, still got it, maintain it myself, but the road tax is £335 and going up, it only does 40mph on a run and is a higher insurance bracket, thats why I'm getting shut and dropping into a smaller engine petrol or diesel fiesta or polo 👍

Think of the savings on inheritance tax! Seriously though, when you love these cars they become your hobby as well. Brilliant fun makes you feel on top of the world. Safe for all who ride in them but yes, one has to maintain them to the best preventative situation. If you are unable to afford a super car it’s best not to own one but to admire them from a distance and save until you can afford one. Great, truthful video without cutting corners and showing a BMW owner they bought the wrong car! Better to own a great car than lease a mundane everyday car or (I’m starting to choke) a milk float. Thanks.
@richtame250116 күн бұрын
Father in law has a milk float. Tbh, my E350 is quieter to drive, along with comfort and having to drive with a coat and gloves etc or not using Ac as it drains the battery a lot. It’s a joke. 2020 car takes ages, your life revolves around the car actually, to re charge. Evangelists are obsessed. Planning journeys maliciously, hoping a charger works and happy to smugly sit in the rain for a couple of hours as it changes for another realistic 100 miles. Whatever the sales say, halve it. Oh, add driving at 40 mph, usually in middle lane. Lane 2??!! As trucks under take then they publish the dash cam on Sad cam sites 🤣🤯🤣 Its a weird world Alternatives to this garbage is hydrogen fuel, self generated from water. In japan now, Toyota. No need for infrastructure we haven’t got. Just H2O??? Can’t tax water though???? I am for the environment but against milk floats. There’s other alternatives that you can run your existing car on? I know this is a great MB mechanical channel and best guy I have seen next to Tony before he retired in Cheshire. He also knew them inside out. Awesome guy But, I had to have a rant on milk floats 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I hate them. No character, no soul, no variation of same car bar another motor?🤮fast but boring Also, absolutely nothing about EV bikes. They just want bikes off the road sadly All the best No offence intended whatsoever 👍
@Judith-c6r16 күн бұрын
@ interesting and truthful reply. We also have a sports milk float in the family. Although charging infrastructure is better in Europe so many hotels do not have facilities and ones stay revolves around charging availability. Range, well that’s a joke, best recharge every 150miles to be safe and that’s with the large battery. I’m bit of an old timer but prefer my V6 CLK convertible with AMG package and so much cheaper in fact I could have 10 CLK or 5 CLK 63 AMG for the same price.

Alot of rough examples for sale unfortunately which problems or upcoming problems will get passed onto the next owner.

I've owned mine for 9 years. It's a 2012 model so it's older than yours. It's averaging around £1500 a year for service, repairs, including tyres and brakes. The only issue with these cars are the exhaust valve motor (I wish they didn't bother with that) and the ABS sensor (wheel speed sensor). The valve motor has been changed once around £500 (parts and labour) and ABS sensors changed twice (around £1000 for all four). So that's all included in the average £1500 running costs. As long as you follow the annual service schedule with a Specialist then these are rock solid. My insurance is £180 and VED is about £320. Plus at this age there is no depreciation since it has bottomed out. This model does not have the folding roof issues of the previous R171 model. Edit: actually looking back, it works out about £1100 per year, not £1500. But the last two years it's averaged £1500 (tyres, brakes, gearbox oil and ABS sensors). Make sure gearbox oil, spark plugs and lubrication of roof mechanism are done every five years.

As a retired mechanic I cannot understand how designers have made it so hard to repair and service cars. What was wrong with a fuel filter and pump outside the tank under a weatherproof shroud ? Gear box fluid, a drain on the converter a sump plug and an engine type oil filter on the side with a simple dipstick . Audi's , many don't have a dipstick , replaced by a sensor that goes wrong and is expensive to buy and install . Plastic housings that crack after four or five years BMW, VAG, GM, Peugeot/Citroen , Fiat and Ford spring to mind dumping coolant at the most inopportune moment... I always got the job of the water pumps and thermostats on Mercs because I had smaller hands.. how can a water pump be £350 EXCHANGE ?? As for NOX sensors these have become a bi yearly service item almost impossible to remove and at a seizure inducing cost. ! It is odd how most of the mechanics I know have chosen boringly reliable cars such as Honda's and Toyota's... It's true mechanics only fix their own cars when the nagging get too loud.....

( Mind you rego or your tax is approx. 320 pounds per year) To find solace in the running costs 1 -I am fortunate enough to use it as a second work car and claim business use of 95% So all costs including depreciation, fuel, R&M are reduced by 47% for me!! 2 - I strictly buy all parts from FCP Euro in the USA They have a Lifetime Replacement Guarantee-All parts purchased from FCP Euro are guaranteed for the life of the ownership of your car. It covers every single part they sell, including wear-and-tear items like brake pads, spark plugs, gaskets, rotors, filters, belts, wiper blades, etc. This covers every part across every brand, including OE, OEM, genuine, performance, aftermarket, and re-manufactured parts. It makes the ownership experience much more enjoyable.

I average about 2500 miles a year with all servicing and repairs done by the same independent Merc specialist.It has everything done whenever they tell me it needs doing with the biggest cost being discs and pads.Some years it’s cost £280 and the worst was about £4000 when I had new brake lines and a few other things but overall,it probably costs less than £2000 a year. I don’t think I can ever part with it.There’s nothing comes close for the money and it fits two dogs comfortably.Compare the cost to buy with an Audi RS6 and there’s no contest. I always put a couple of grand a year aside for running cost,what you save one year you usually spend the next.

Sounds like a Maserati type experience, there are two Quadraporte's on Autotrader, one £10500 and one £12500, both low mileage. But just the servicing and road tax will be over £2000 a year, without any extra repairs. Sixteen year old cars always need tlc so i guess i'll just stick to my Honda!

you had that CL500 a while back and the owner had spent approx 2000 a year with you. This is clearly a similar cost. But once again its a high performance prestige car and it costs.

142K miles so far on mine, purchased w/50K miles - drivetrain has been solid, suspension is what has cost me the most, blown out rear shocks, worn front shocks and bushes. currently needs shifter parking button module and rear brakes. thanks for the video!

I have owned my 1992 300SL-24 for 10 years and the cost of repairs and maintenance, including VAT and labour, has averaged £2,478 pa. I purchased the car for £9k and have driven 70k miles. The total mileage is now 144k. The cost includes the following big-ticket items: a s/s exhaust and cat, 2 new front wings, new headlining for the hardtop, and replacement used differential. Bear in mind that the cost of parts and labour has increased significantly since I purchased the car. The cost of the car new was >£60k with every conceivable extra fitted, except the rear seats. I intend to run it up to 200k miles, at which point it may not be worth very much.

Seems reasonable running costs to me for a car like that, the reason the costs are so high is because you look after it Sam, which of course you would be expected to. Would be interesting to compare to other similar makes if anyone else has the figures?

Great video. Lovely car. But those costs make it way out of reach. The running costs would buy a decent second hand car. But awesome car. As an ex car dealer the older juicy stuff is costly to run if maintained properly. 👍👍

I just purchased my first mercedes here in the US....a 2010 e350 4matic. Truth be told, as excited as I am, im very nervous as to maintaining it myself. It's been a one owner car always meticulously maintained at the dealer all of its life. Wish me luck!

Going on 5 years with my 2010 C207 E350. Guessing yours is a W212? Don't be nervous. It's deceivingly easy to wrench on as long as you can diagnose and have at least an icarsoft MB 2 or similar scan tool at minimum. So much knowledge/info out there. Stay ahead w/ preventive maintenance when it's justified and you'll be fine. 4matic definitely brings a bit more pain then rwd though. And I will say, for all I've done I do wish I'd gotten a W211 E55 instead as they were near the same price back when I got my coupe.

@@RothBeyondTheGrave but 207 is based on a c-class isn't it? explains why spr-sam says 207 is "more reliable"/cheaper to maintain than 212

Just change the fluids regularly. my brother bought a2009 slk350 in 2014 , he's just sold it to his son in law. Parts are cheap and the cars are easy to maintain yourself. I bought a 2003 Clk cabrio 2.6 in 2012 when nine years old , we had it 10 years and I serviced it myself, I've only just sold it . Plenty of videos on you tube which show how to do stuff. You will really enjoy your car!!
@quoc-baovu824115 күн бұрын
These E350 are pretty reliable as long as you keep up w/ the maintenance. My dad has a '14 E350 & so far he has only done the basic maintenance & his car runs super smooth, not cheap for those services & I wish I live closer to help him DIY them. He gave me his old '01 CLK430 w/ 68K miles & I love it. Thanks to YT videos like SPR, I DIY'ed all preventive maintenance including valve covers, Engine/Trans mounts, all fluids change, spark-plugs, brakes, fuel filter, all pulleys, belt etc etc... Things will break on older cars so just be ready to handle them, but these cars are relatively reliable & a joy to drive... BTW great video again & looking fwd to Sam's (SPR) next video, cheers...

Great video as always Sam. The running costs of my C204 C63 Coupe over the last 2.5 years tally very closely with yours. It really is £1/mile at least when you sum up maintenance, servicing, repairs, insurance and VED. Even a little more when you factor in depreciation! They really are wonderful vehicles though. I am really struggling with where to go next. Anything in the same vein but newer might be better on fuel but the depreciation will be higher and I'm sure the sound won't be anywhere near as good!
@jgripen96914 сағат бұрын
Keep the 204! Legendary car, legendary engine. Depreciation won’t be a problem, trust me. Here in Sweden, they’re going up in price, especially now when the new C63 is a horrific 2.0L 4 banger😂😂 Who even wants that..

If you think thats bad per mile you should see how kuch i spent on my tvr per mile. The road tax was cheaper at £280, but everything else not so much 😅😅😅 was easily £3-4 a mile. I had it for 3 years and had it in storage for the winters.

My 66 plate M5 - roughly 6-7k miles per year, same in tax, same in servicing, and same in fuel, except insurance went from 1.5k to 2.2k to 3.3k in the last 3 years…. All in about 7-8k a year. Not factoring in depreciation….
@ozodyssey552817 күн бұрын
It would help contain costs if there were more independent service garages that could be relied on. Unfortunately you're not the only one that's stopped accepting new clients Merc owners looking for MOT and even the most basic service are being squeezed out to the useless franchises or back to the dealers.

Hi guy, I really like your style: very honest and realistic. These costs were my biggest fear as they can be a bit of a black box and hard to estimate. It sounds like the running costs rise even though the value of the car is still dropping or hopefully reaching a plateau.

Sam, great video as usual ⚠️ Love my 2003 SL55 AMG with just 37k miles Running costs are less with the engine side of things (M113). Did you factor in depreciation?? Mine has been minimal, in fact it's gone up £6k since I bought it 6 years ago so in a way, subsidises my running costs. It's smiles per mile, that's for sure, and only £440 tax because it's pre March 2006. I reckon pre 2006 cars can only go up in value judging by the current VED rates 😎

Great honest video and great to flag up to people thinking about buying a "cheap" AMG. On the other end of the scale I have owned a W204 2011 C180CGI for almost 12 years. Bought privately at 14k. Now 63k. Total expense £2,400.46 for basic servicing, brakes, 5 tyres, gearbox service plus two "issues" - thermostat/coolant change & washer pump replacement (Covid). Needs rear pads doing for MOT due in March. But that is it. I've kept every receipt. Not worth much now but still drives very well.

I've owned my car the same amount of time as yourself purchased march 19. Have replaced near on the same amount as stuff as yourself albeit no injectors but they are on the to do list. Have you had to replace your cam adjusters, I did hear you mention this. Also, is the oil temperature sensor easily located and replaced? Had one rear shock absorber replaced like yourself. Hav e exactly the same spec as yours. They are an amazing drive. I don't think people really know unless you own one how super fun and enjoyable and crazy fast they are to drive. Had the 55k before this. But it doesn't come close to the 156 unit. It's just relentless. Yours sounds unstock on the exhaust revs. Just like my own. Great video thanks for sharing 👍

Thanks for the brutal honesty. I now appreciate why you had to stop so many times in order to sit & digest the shocking costs😮!!! In all seriousness though I know from experience that some of the equivalent large CC Audis and BMWs are also shockingly expensive, so as long as you're happy with the car then that is the main thing... Great upload! PS: AMG = 'All Money Gone" 😂😂.
