Spray Painting My Tow Hook & Skid Plate - Cheap Tacoma Spray Paint Mod | 3rd Gen Tacoma

In this video, I am spray painting my tow hook & skid plate on my Tacoma. This is a cheap Tacoma spray paint mod that helps to bring some contrast to your 3rd Gen Tacoma.
This has to be the cheapest Tacoma mod that brings the biggest change to your truck. Not only that, but it's also probably the easiest Tacoma mod.
Decided to give the front of the truck some contrast by painting my tow hook & rusty skid plate. Used a light gray matte paint to look similar to the TRD skid and red matte paint for the tow hook. This is probably the cheapest Tacoma "mod" that can really change the look of your truck.

Just did the same to mine, used Glacier Grey Krylon on the Skidplate, and Strawberry Fields Rustoleom on the tow hook. Did several coats, and hit it with clear coat afterwards, gotta say Krylon might be more expensive, but it's worth it - Rustoleom took forever to dry, and was peeling pretty easily compared. Thanks for the video. Hardest part was cleaning/prep!

Nice! Yeah I agree the Krylon is good stuff. I'm gonna need to redo mine soon since I've been beating it up off roading lol I didn't do a clear coat last time but I'll give it a try next time to give it a little more protection.

Definitely. Especially if you don't do any crazy off roading where you need more heavy duty protection. In Florida rock punctures aren't a big issue.

Any number of vendors sell the red vinyl TRD lettering. Pop it on there after painting it grey and you’ll get the look you’re going for without dropping $450 bucks.

Did you sand the skid plate or use a good degreaser to remove the wax from the blue Wash & Wax. I would think with the skid plate having wax on it the paint wouldn’t bond to the metal as good. I mean looks good though.

That skid plate is too thin. Need a real trd skid plate. The stock one will get destroyed quick. Ask me how I know.

I did not get any overspray because I removed the skid & tow hook from the truck to paint. But it's definitely worth it! Cheap and easy way to add some contrast to your truck.

Not terrible, but not good haha It's scratched up pretty good & has a couple of mud stains because I waited too long to wash it. Can't really tell unless you're up close though.

How has the paint job held up over the past year?

Not too bad. The front lip is missing a lot of paint from rocks/bugs and stuff hitting it and the bottom has some scratches from use. Definitely something you need to touch up every once in a while though unless you put a lot of coats on initially.
