In this video, I’m out in the hay fields spraying 2,4-D weed killer to control broadleaf weeds and promote healthy grass growth. I’ll be using the 2-ethylhexyl ester formulation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, a common and effective herbicide for agricultural fields.
Join me as I go over the entire process, from preparing the sprayer to mixing the 2,4-D and applying it across the field. I’ll also share some important tips for safe handling, proper application, and best practices for maximizing the effectiveness of this herbicide on hay fields. If you’re managing hay or pasture land, this video will help you get a better understanding of how to use 2,4-D for weed control.
Key Highlights:
• Step-by-step guide to mixing and applying 2,4-D
• Tips for safe and effective spraying
• Managing broadleaf weeds in hay fields

Great job with the spraying. The landscape looks great. It is very flat where we live so it is good to see some hills

Brad, your area in Middle Tennessee is just beautiful! Thank you for your service! You deserve beautiful views like this after all that time. I can't wait to view middle Tennessee in person when we come visit our nieces in Spring Hill and our daughter in Chickamauga. Not sure yet if we will visit our niece in Fayetteville. But working on it. She might come to Georgia, not sure on those details. Nice video!

@Nelson Ridge Farm Brad, we did drive up to Culver's in Murfreesboro in 2016 from Fort Oglethorpe when our daughter lived in Fort O. Also have flew to Nashville once, but didn't visit the Nashville area, just drove to our daughter's. We like Culver's!

Great vid Brad! Also, retired Army guy here in middle tn, what mix ratio do you use on the 2,4d?
@nelsonridgefarm
@nelsonridgefarm 3 ай бұрын
Hey man! I struggle with the ratios from the charts on the back of the container. So for a while now, I’m doing 2.5 gallons 2-4d in 200 gallons of water for 10 acres I think. I’ve got it written down, but my notebook is in the tractor. Thanks for watching and for your service Andrew.

Ask your local Ag Agent about Foliar Micronutrients that can be applied to your fields. Wouldn’t hurt to get soil test for Manganese and Sulfur. Making hay definitely pulls a lot of sulfur from the soil. Most standard soil test don’t cover it. I put out a liquid sulfur and micronutrient mix with excellent results.

Not trying to be argumentative here Brad, just weighing in with my thoughts here. 2,4,D was developed back in the latter 1940’s by Dow Chemical, after Henry Kissinger had successfully brought a huge group of Nazi scientists and biological engineers to the United States to avoid prosecution for war crimes. The Operation was know as Project Paperclip. I grew up on a farm in Iowa and have spent my entire 66 years of life around agriculture. I will say this about that. The use of chemicals scares the crap out of me. I know it is none of my business if someone uses chemicals or not. I do however, feel if people knew what I know, the chemical companies would have a hard time keeping their doors open. Here is another tic big to ponder on. 2,4,D is one molecule away from “agent orange”. That isn’t much difference. Not enough for me. I used to work for a local Cooperative. Listed on the bulletin board in the office was the amount of damage claims they paid out each year. It amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars. It was a multi million dollar company so they just shrugged it off as a cost of doing business. I have lost a lot of farmer friends and neighbors over the years. Most to cancer. Some had dementia, some Parkinson’s. It hasn’t been proven that chemicals had anything to do with any of their deaths. It hasn’t been proven to me that it didn’t. Thanks for letting me rant Brad. Like I said before, I don’t disparage anyone using chemicals. As for me, not so much. Thanks Brad.

Thanks Gary, good info! Gotta be diligent when you use chemicals for sure. I don’t think I talked in the video about waiting for the right wind, and humidity conditions, etc but I’m always paying attention to the details carefully. Again, appreciate your comments. -Brad

How often do need to spray the 2 4 D
@nelsonridgefarm
@nelsonridgefarm 2 ай бұрын
@@joesears584 hey Joe, there are different answers to that good question.. but I put it on once a year. Using Ester 2, 4-D when we have three straight days of 60 degree (plus) weather in late Feb or March. Lots of folks do a second application with anime 2,4-D after 1st cutting (it’s less volatile than Esther). “Ester before Easter” is the saying around here.

There has to be a reason for spraying weedkiller on hayfields although I can`t see it as animals would eat or bed down in hay weeds as well.

@@nelsonridgefarm Maybe they don`t (or won`t ) realise most "weeds" are actually beneficial to animals . Not going into the politics but trusting anything pharma say about their products maybe they don`t realise that weedkillers started as biological weapons in WW1 ,some are still inflicting harm on those who deal with them even in low dosage .
@nelsonridgefarm
@nelsonridgefarm Жыл бұрын
@@jacksimper5725 the horses don’t eat the weeds. And the weeds choke out native grasses. Much better than tilling over and over and replanting every year (over-compaction and erosion) in our case. But we’ve only been doing it for a little over 50 years, so there’s that.
