Back in the 70's and 80's when we were spraying metal flake, we used to ground the car by placing a metal chain on the back axle running to a ground. Doing this you get rid of static electricity which makes the flakes lay flat and not stand up, so you don't need to nib them later and possibly damage them. We also used to put a couple of clean ball bearings in the paint cup which helps keeps the flakes on the move in the cup as you are moving while spraying.

Thanks for the tips. I like the grounding technique, I'll have to give that a try next time. The agitating cup is also essential luxury if you are doing flake.

Isn’t part of the goal to have flakes at all sorts of orientations to reflect light from many angles? Won’t have them lay flat lessen that effect?

Load of tripe a car Is grounded anyway🤣 if you've recently sanded plastics then run some water or a tack rag over it. Ball bearings in a cup stops flow so just quit it man

The way we do it is to do all the flake work then blow the whole car off so any lose flake falls off then bury it in clear. We don’t do the kandy work until it’s perfectly smooth. Also I know there’s better painters out there then me but I strive for every job to be better then the last as long as your learning and growing as a painter then that’s all people should focus on.

@John Thomas Is this what you do to feel superior? Go around on KZbin and correct people’s grammar. I can tell you that in this line of work having “perfect” grammar doesn’t get you paid more or more respect.

This American loves everything you put out! Anyone who wants to be a great painter needs to diversify their technique, and learning from other painters is how you do it. I'm still a novice but candy is all I've ever sprayed. Ive never seen it done like this in person, only read about it. Please keep cranking out the killer work, keep that outlook, and don't stress what anyone thinks. Hell most Americans don't even like their next door neighbor, so dont take any negativity from an American seriously. They probably dont know wtf they're talking about anyway.

Your one of the best painters I have ever seen. A trick I learned with flakes is put down a similar base colour to the flake. It helps coverage and cuts down on heaps of stuff. Your job came out killer

I'm a street vendor and after watching your video about doing the lowrider panel I did the cart and sides of my van. She gets lots of attention with what you shared and the advice you gave when I wrote in on the video. Your generous sharing of knowledge has been more helpful than you might know. Love it brother! Try this tip...after you lay the flake, airline the whole car while still wet to remove or flatten as many loose or stacked flake as possible and the same when dry... then HS clear to build, then flat, then candy base or 2k and then flow... One extra run I know but this will drastically reduce your high spots and any break throughs will still be candy red. It also will add a look of extra depth to the flake. I personally never flat after spraying candy. It's always risky.

That looks really nice. I did something similar in a British Racing Green enamel on a motorbike many, many years ago with a similar result but used a lighter base colour and no candy, just flake mixed with the colour then followed by clear coats. Worth the effort in my books. I intend to do another lighter red flake job with candy later this year, so will keep your black base colour in mind. Don't see much flake these days.

I do a very aggressive tack rag after my last coat of flake. I've basically figured that the thing should look like almost like normal basecoat when you go to clear over it, if there's still proud bitties then I know I didn't tack rag enough. I'm not sure I've ever used anything quite as big as you are in this vid, but I thought the advice might be worth sharing. Love the channel, you've basically taught me how to paint over the years, thanks!

With flake this big you don't want to sand it flat until you are sure you have enough clear to bury it. Doing a scotch-brite scuff between applications of clear is the best way to avoid sanding the flake and solvent pop in the heavy clear.

I have done 2 motorbikes with flake/candy, I found it better to clear after the flake stage, flatten down that clear, then do the candy. That way any stand up flakes are taken care of before the candy goes on. But a killer job, well done. As for negative people, they are everywhere, just ignore them, and look after yourself.

I don’t get bad mouthing other painters. I like to make as many friends in the business. You learn from other painters. My friends have made me better, and I know I’ve helped others. Gunny, a bunch of us here in the States went to Standox training facility in Chicago. We all lived about 8 hours away. We were all 15 plus years painting, but we had the best time. We went to a Cubs game, some of the guys went to a strip club. The next day a couple guys were puking, and had hangovers. One guy charged $3000 on his company American Express, at the strip club and didn’t even remember it.🤣 It was a 3 day course for recertification, we have to do every so often, so we can warranty paint jobs, but really it’s to have a great time and learn. And also social network. I personally think it would be a blast to get to work with you! Even if it was one job.

If you got standing flakes then either the pressure at the nozzle was too high causing dry spray that wouldn't let the flake settle into the clear, or your spray distance was too far which, again, causes dry spray. Or it could have been both. Looked good in the end though. Nice job! 👍
