It's best to sand it down to bare metal when painting over someone else's paint but sometimes it's not in the budget. If the paint is not flaking with a good bond to the surface it should be good to go over it.

Looks really good, would you prefer to paint with an old tire, and remove when done, on or with out a tire mounted.. Well with the tire mounted already, you wouldnt have to worry about the finish being damaged

I’ve read through and didn’t see this so I’m sorry for asking 2 years later lol… I’ve been painting some motorcycle wheels at home for the first time and have run into minor problems. I’m painting them on a stand (so they can spin around and be accessible from both sides), and it’s worked well so far. I had tires on and masked as you did. Would you have rather painted them without the tires? I did one without and I’m able to bring the paint/clear up over the lip so it’s back further. Also, when I clear, I keep getting orange peel. I’ve not had luck wet sanding because my wheels have lots of angles you can’t reach well enough. Mine are also aluminum, so I scratched them up good and used adhesive promoter and a self etch primer, then white base coat, then fluorescent red and finally 2K clear about 2-3 coats. Long story short lol, do you recommend removing the tires first if possible? And any tips for clear coat without runs/orange peel? Maybe my gun isn’t set up correctly? Love your videos, thank you! I’m in SC, might need to bring you some wheels!

Yes, I would suggest removing the tires if possible and when spraying rims I try to get it wet as I can to keep it from getting orange peel

I now believe that I got the orange peel because I was using a small detail gun 1.0 tip, and I was using a fast activator which I understand is the hardest to lay flat? I’ll now use a 1.4 standard tip gun and a slow hardener, and keep my gun discipline (distance) consistent to avoid spraying too far/close and the droplets being too small or whatever is causing orange peel.

15-20 mins. I think I actually sprayed an intercoat clear over it...I'm not exactly sure. I you don't Spray an intercoat clear....I try to wait at least a day to keep from peeling it up when unmasking

Yes, on these I did but I've painted wheels by using a pipe and sliding the wheel over the pipe and spinning the wheel while painting them but it's kind of hard doing that and filming at the same time.
