"Á Sprengisandi" - an Icelandic Folk Song Cover by Jack Wale

"Á Sprengisandi" is an Icelandic folk song, originally written by the author and poet Grímur Thomsen (1820-1896). The Sprengisandur was a passage route used during the times of the Icelandic Commonwealth (930 - 1265) which was only accessible in the summer. It remained impassable in the winter due to ice and snow, and also in the spring due to heavy rain and flooding.
Sprengisandur gives the area its name which is derived from the Icelandic noun sandur "sand," which symbolises the volcanic ash deserts in the island's centre, and the verb sprengja, which means "to ride a horse to death".
