The best staging of Spring Awakening that I have ever seen was without doubt the 2017 Broadway Revival of the Deaf West Production, Lovely show, heartbreaking show when done well. Great review as always, Cheers.

As brilliant as it was, I thought it took away from the story lines and characters

I don't know why producers have to keep reinventing the wheel. Wholesale changes to a successful show are more likely to piss people off than improve anything or bring about greater success. One of the strangest SA productions I've seen was a "gender fluid" one - of a musical that's more reliant on gender "solidity" than most others.

I have actually never seen Melchior and Wendla's intimacy as an act of romance, but I don't know if that is a me-thing or if it maybe was never intended to one anyway.

I agree. In the original play by Frank Wedekind, Melchior rapes Wendla. I never liked how the original Broadway production made it like there was consent. I appreciate that other adaptations of Spring Awakening do seem to take that fact in accord and imply that there is nothing romantic about it.

it's rape. it's not romantic, not at all. you're completely correct.

The act is explicitly rape in the original play. I’ve always interpreted it the same way in the musical, although the consent was made more ambiguous. (I assume this is so that the only surviving protagonist isn’t a glaringly obvious rapist)

Just saw the most amazing production of Spring Awakening in Seattle this past weekend. There are some mind-blowing performances in this show. My husband saw the OG Spring Awakening on Bway and he still LOVED the 5th Avenue Theatre production. Highly recommend to your PNW fans. Plenty of sexy and surprising moments. Mickey Jo, you should totally come!

Spring Awakening is a wonderful musical. I'm from the States, and have seen it several times in amateur productions and in New York. I'm not sure what the production you are reviewing is like, but it sounds like the casting is more diverse and the set considerably different. I think if you had seen the New York original production you would have felt that the intensity was at the right level; and the characters were believable and connected with each other. My guess is that this production might evolve, as it is performed in front of audiences; and, if it gets to the West End, you'll get to have a good cry. I enjoy your reviews.

I’m so glad it wasn’t just me who loved “Totally Fucked” in this production, it was just so perfectly staged, performed, choreographed, and felt very much like a climax or culmination.

To say that Spring Awakening didn't catch on in London is serious understatement. It transferred from Hammersmith to the West End and closed in 8 weeks. I don't recall there being a huge amount of advertising about it at the time. Yes it was known amongst theatre people, but not much more. I've never seen the show myself, but I have the OBCR and listened to it once. Just not for me. The style of music, lyrics and so much teenage angst.... Having seen the original play, this just seemed overwrought. But i believe Spring Awakening does hold the record as the Best New Musical with the shortest West End run.

I was so sad when it ended. I saw it twice, and had another set of tickets when they announced it was closing. The acting in that original London cast was particularly impressive imo. Really helped give it an extra emotional punch.

When Mickey did his worst lyrics in Broadway shows episode I thought for sure there would be some examples from Spring Awakening - I don't have them in front of me but I remember Peter Filichia writing in one of his books why he disliked the lyrics and I agree with him about it.... The Deaf West Production was amazing. I would love to see this U.K. version!

Went to see it on New Year's Eve and was absolutely blown away! This show was on my bucket list for a very long time and I am so glad I finally managed to see it. I was crying through most of second part and loved it so much I've bought a script right after it ended. It was also sort of a black whole for me - I knew it has an amazing reputation and it's pretty controversial but I had no idea about the storyline. Definitely a must see!

I was caught out by your pronunciation of Laurie Kynaston's surname! You said it... "ni-aston"? I thought it was "kin-aston". The version I know of that surname was around a lot in Elizabethan times (which happens to be one of my history era nerdisms), and I've never heard it any way other than "kin" with a hard K at the beginning. Happy to be corrected if you know different though!

Gosh I completely agree, the almeida and this production felt far too hip and trendy for me - loved this production though, so glad I got to see it! #MickeyJoGiveaway

You lose credibility when you find this many faults with a production and still give it 5 stars

You make an excellent point and I struggled over a decision on a star rating - I think this is where they lack depth because technically it is a very accomplished and polished production that succeeds on a great many fronts but lacked emotional connection for me perfectly. Perhaps you're right and it should have been 4 😊

Honestly if you weren't able to connect with it, it makes me think the acting performances weren't that great. Considering how much this performance made me cry when I first saw it in the original London production. Though that original production did have exceptional acting -- probably better than Broadway, even if the vocal performances were better on Broadway.)
