Ep 6: Spring Break-Up in Alaska | Resizing Cabin Logs

I can happily announce that by this posting, we are driving trucks between the two properties!! The creek has broken up along with all the big rivers around us and summer is well on the way.
It will be no time at all until we are living on our own property in the camper and soon in our own cabin! The guys continue to make quick progress on setting the cabin logs and we keep trudging forward with our commute from the guest cabin.
“Break-up” is a Spring season spoken of often in Alaska as when the ice finally begins to break and wash away on all of the frozen bodies of water here. It is a chilly, muddy, and not-ideal time to most locals! It can be dangerous on a snowmachine and a quick route to getting stuck in anything without tracks. We’ve loved watching the creek ice float by and dam up and break again. But travel has definitely been tough.
Next on the cabin will be the loft floor and then up to the roof! We are hopeful to get the roof on the cabin before the real heavy rains hit and be able to begin on the interior soon.

I love the view out the window of the pond. How exciting it is coming along so fast. It's going to be absolutely beautiful. How fulfilling it must be for you and Levi seeing your dreams coming ture. It's so special to see father and son working side by side.

I just realized that y’all have a LGD in Gus. Those are truly awesome dogs, and you’re right to worry about him and bears. They are very protective of the area they consider to be their territory. The cabin looks awesome. I know that you’re anxious and excited to finally get on your land.

Way to go! Your vision is happening before your eyes! So great! My husband is in his 70’s and I’m trailing behind. We live on the icy waters of Lake Huron. We’ve been building a chicken coop out of pine and cedar we are resourcing from our land. Small task in comparison to yours but my husband has cut each plank with a chain saw and using a draw knife, and a Dexter Russel knife planed each log. You are an inspiration to watch!

Haha....thanks for sharing the outtakes at the end. That is why Eleinne and I don't talk into the camera (at least yet). It's a lot of work and takes dedication. Logs are going up quick, and looking great.

So happy for you and Levi and Henry, Becca. The cabin is really coming along. It will be so nice when you can get the rv over at your property. Little Henry will be able to rest better while you and Levi can continue to work outside. Looking amazing! This past week has been really nice here, too. I hope to get my cool weather plants in the ground this weekend. Soon I can get my other plants in the greenhouse. I don't know if I mentioned it, I live in Big Lake.

Has anyone reached out to you for sponsorship? I'd think building a cabin there would be all kinds of companies wanting you to feature their products from power tools to chainsaws to lasers, solar companies, SxS, ATV, Tractor mfg's & dealers etc. If no-one has reached out, you should reach out to the ones that you feel would be beneficial and maybe you'd get to use their products to help with life in Alaska or even better get to keep them.

This cabin l 14:14 it sure was an excellent idea!! Going up fast too! How old is the baby now? I used the same type of baby carrier myself. Loved it. Great for when I was gardening. He went on my back for that when he was bigger. What a cool little chair for baby, so cute❤

He's closing in on 5 months old now! I think I'm going to try and find a back carrier for him now that he's able to hold himself up and it would mean I could actually bend over with him on me!

Great progress. Love Levi's chair. Becca, it must be hard on you to not have too much to do. I was wondering while watching you sweep up tge floor, could you make Levi some blocks. It would take some sanding I know but would not waste the wood and be a memory of the build❤❤ You all are doing GREAT.
