I understand but for me it’s the opposite - the older I get the more I miss the dry cold of Northern Alberta. I live in Southern Ontario and the dampness is a killer. I don’t actually know if Alaska is a dry cold or damp. I guess that would make the difference.

I was born in Alaska but was moved when very small. I do not have much memory of it. I think of maybe going back someday. I wrote a mostly fictional book (Weak Love and Strong Love) that had a Russian tsar as a character. After choosing him as a character for the book, I read somewhere that in reality he was the tsar that sold Alaska to America. I was very pleased and found it significant I had picked him for the book and then found out he had been the one to sell the state I was born in to America.

If you put all your household waste into a net tied to a long rope with a marker at the other end drop that into the water at the same place every time you can attract crabs and fish to the same spot then set your traps, just have a go and see, you might be surprised at the results, fish and crabs always go to places they know where food is, just the same as us 😁👍

Just subscribed. We are visiting Alaska in June of next year and want to see if it will suit us for full time living. We currently live in central Wyoming. We want a more wild land to embark on. We have a 5 and 3 year old. Where would you recommend we visit to get a full experience of Alaska? We are homesteaders already and want to continue that along with hunting and fishing. On our visit we would be most interested in fishing, where should we go that is kid friendly terrain and most likely to catch fish? Thanks for your videos they are awesome!
@AnAlaskaHomestead2 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome. It’s also a very hard question. From east to west Alaska would stretch from Florida to California. There are so many different climates and and environments. I love where we live but the Kenai peninsula is also a nice place. I think Fairbanks area comes to mind when people here Alaska, cold and rugged. I don’t know how long you plan on staying but flying into Anchorage and renting a car is not a bad idea. Head south down to Homer or Seward. You can fish and hunt here. Matsu valley is also nice but a longer drive to fish for salmon and halibut. You can fish at lakes though. SE Alaska is it’s own animal and it’s so far removed from the rest of Alaska. Be careful though, if you come to SE you might just never want to leave. A place where the mountains meet the ocean and it’s very mild summers and winters. Good luck on wherever you end up going.

I see you catching Red King crabs more than Dungeness. Those Red King crabs were probably all females. Commercial fishing for Dungeness usely starts about June 15 and they get shalower through the summer when the humpy's/pink salmon get to the creeks. Have you ever run down to Rocky Island and tried around there for Dungeness crab or up to Saint James Bay before ? Get your saw out and start cutting the roots off the stumps a couple of 5 gallon buckets of water to wash them off them old Sitka spruce and hemlock trees. Well hope you have a good week up there

@@AnAlaskaHomestead you going down to port Snetisham to do a little driftnetting at sweet heart flats trying to get a few whiting river sockeye salmon. Right in the mouth of port Snetisham in between stephans passage up to where it makes the T in port Snetisham was good halibut fishing best place between the mouth of glacier bay was right in the mouth of port Snetisham I don't know how deep you can sport fish but if you got a way to get down to the bottom it's a good halibut spot. The run of sokeyes in the whiting river doesn't last that long inside Snetisham and there's a few Dungeness crabs on sweet heart flats but port Snetisham was always good for tanner crab. One guy I used to crew for always liked port Snetisham I can remember greycod fishing for tanner crab bait and the North winds in January watching Willie waes blowing out of the whiting river took a full day and half before we could get the jear back and then getting back up to Taku harbor and couldn't get accros Taku inlet and Jim had the sea plane come get us from Taku harbor which just about couldn't fly across because of the Taku winds in the inlet so he could watch the Superbowl. Dipnetting at sweet heart flats gets more humpies/pink salmon than anything else good luck at that.

@@michaelbaker9415 yeah that’s the goal. You’ve got some great memories from here. I’m just starting to make them. We’ve lived here for 7 years but it sure doesn’t feel that way.

@@AnAlaskaHomestead moved there September 1982. Graduation 1985 Juneau Douglas high school moved from up there September 2003 can't commercial fish anymore because legs getting bad as I get older because of getting burned when I was a kid. Wish I could go back to commercial fishing but can't do that Juneau costs to much to stay there in rent and other things.. My daughter and 2 grand daughters still live in Juneau. My scumbag older brother lives there to which like I said before it wouldn't be a big loss if someone grabbed him up and left him on grand island or someplace like that. I don't talk or deal with him any more how he stays out of lemon creek correction/prison I don't know. Last I knew one of my cousins still lives in Juneau. I don't talk or anything with him either all he is a drunk pot head. After spending a month and a half in the hospital when I was 8 years old and they kept me on a bunch of pain meds most of that time. Just not into any drugs or booze or anything like that. Circulation on my legs is messed up from getting burned got to make sure I don't end up in a wheelchair. Juneau just isn't the place to live anymore. It was getting so I couldn't live on the boat I had and Juneau 2 ways in and out of their. I wish I could go back to commercial fishing or down here go drive a freight truck or do something.
