Diatomaceous earth is very helpful.. flea powder for a dog, one that kills chewing lice is also great on a hens bum... not a powder for the grass but one that can actually go on the dog..-You can also make a nice bucket of water and dish soap ( dawn is best) place the hen in the bucket and gently scrub her bottom.. (and legs if scaly mites are present.) an old soft tooth brush works well. Then a spray cooking oil.. coconut oil is best.. anyway spray the hens bottom and legs with the spray. It kills the mites! And soothes the skin.. -Great video ! How's the weather across the pond love? I hear it's bitterly cold!!

Hi, you 'can' use DE, and up until about 10 years ago, it was recommended, but things have moved on a tad since then and vets are recommending an off-label spot-on as a preventative, and the use of a spray containing permethrin for topical application. Neither of these products are currently licenced for use on poultry in the UK, but most chicken-savvy vets are happy to prescribe them and they work very well. One bonus of using this systemic approach is that it controls not only lice and mites on the birds, but also red mites in the housing. If you want to use something topical on their legs (which shouldn't be necessary if you are using a spot-on) then try Sudocrem. This contains Benzyl Benzoate, which repels mites and lice.

You'll b surprised on how many people don't even know how 2 properly hold a chicken another thing is 2 use your dog flea spray..... spray under the wings, neck base,base of tail feathers & of course the vent area by chance u hav feather mites use permithrin spray feathers @ nite & also the roost pole,only time they feast is @ nite a good sign they have them is the tail (chewed up) also if they have chicken fleas use & is the only product that really works is a dog spray that goes by FLEE.... luv ur voice.

I need to wash my chicken (poopy butt) and not sure if she has lice or mites so wanted to ask if I could wash her with Hartz dog flea and tick shampoo? Then would like to dry her with hair dryer then dust her with DE And 5 drops of ivemectrin? Then again in 7-10 days? Does that sound safe? I don’t want to make her sick

You can very carefully wash just her rear end and make sure that it's thoroughly dry. If you are using an Ivermectin spot-on, and repeating it quarterly, then she shouldn't have lice or mites. You would need to treat the whole flock though as recommended by your vet. Depending on the concentration - 0.35% is 2 drops per 5oog of bird. 5 drops is way too much. I wouldn't recommend using DE as it can affect their breathing... and yours too. You need to work out why she has a poopy bottom and treat that, perhaps you need to test her for worms - Westgate Labs test kits are easily available. Clare Taylor

Not really - it's not a deterrent, but 'can' kill them, but only by mechanical action (it abrades their exo-skeletons) the Buz Busters powder actually contains permethrin; the same active ingredient as the Total Mite Kill spray, so it knocks mites down on contact. Spray the housing first with TMK, then powder with Buz Busters in all the nooks and crannies, roosting bar brackets, nest box etc, before adding clean bedding. If you have an infestation, then repeat every 3 days until you have knocked it back, then revert to using as your weekly routine. DE has been reported to cause irritation to both human and chicken mucous membranes, so eyes, nostrils, airways.

Each week when you clean out - use Nettex's Buz Busters powder. If you have an established infestation, then you will need to scrub, spray (with Total Mite Kill Concentrate) and then powder every 3 days to break the red mite breeding cycle. Then, once it is clear, revert to weekly treating.
